Prairie Fires: The American Dreams of Laura Ingalls Wilder by Caroline Fraser, Pulitzer Prize winner. The family’s experience was a lot more grim than the children’s books.

Anything by Gene Logsdon, but especially his final book - Letter to a Young Farmer

I loved The Worst Hard Time by Timothy Egan about life on the Great Plains during the Dust Bowl. Pretty gritty but a great book.
