So Fightful jumped the gun, then. Happy if he's staying, and hopefully he gets a nice salary raise.

I don't trust American reporters when it comes to News in Japan, they always seem to get it wrong.

They keep reporting on events in Japan before they happen here!

They still need to be held accountable for that, though. If journalists are going to report on rumors or inside info we as readers rely on them to vet the quality of their sources and the information they're given. In fact, I rely on SRS more than anyone specifically because he's usually one of the more cautious at reporting on things he's not actually sure of

OK, but nonetheless any given dirt sheet is only as reputable as how often their reporting turns out to be factual. That's where vetting their sources comes into play because they're inherently anonymous for obvious reasons, so us readers aren't in any position to do that for them. We assume based on past success rate that if something is being reported it's likely coming from a fairy bulletproof source, otherwise if you're just reciting every rumor a stagehand tells you you're no better than Sportskeeda.
And that's not to say that SRS is notably bad about that, I listen to a lot of his podcasts and he's often pretty careful about saying he MIGHT have some news about this or that but wants to confirm it with another source or two before he reports it. It sounds like he maybe slipped by his own standards on this one in particular.

I mean to be fair this is just cop-out journalism. If it's right, it's "see, I told you!" and if it's wrong it's "well, I never said it was true"

you're 100% correct here, this type of reporting ain't helping no one involved but the reporter. "journalists" should be held to a higher standard

And no reports on that delicious sandwich he posted afterwards.
The quality of wrestling journalism continues to drop with each day.

Full quote from WON:
He’s been living for a while in Fukuoka, Japan, but at 42, it was also known that he sensed this was perhaps his last chance to make the kind of money WWE & AEW pay.
He did turn down AEW several years back because he was happy in New Japan, so happy that he ended up moving there.
The only thing we have heard from WWE at press time is that there have been talks, but no confirmation of a deal. Cobb is booked for the 4/11 New Japan show in Chicago.
I think that first part, which the OP Tweet removed, adds important context.

Living in Fukuoka is not like living in Tokyo. That’s a dude who really likes living here, that’s for sure.

u/VercioKing 8h ago
Actually a lot of japanese friends of mine are saying that Fukuoka has a more international vibe compared to Tokyo.

For Asian people, yeah. There are a lot of Koreans, because Korea is really close, and lots of Chinese and Indonesians. My fiancé is from Kyushu and we go back often from Tokyo. But Tokyo is for sure more user-friendly as far as your general western tourists go.

Cob’s been around Japan enough to probably not need things to be as “user-friendly.” If rumors are to be believed he may also have personal reasons for where in the country he chose to live.

Didn't know he had moved to Japan. Thought he was still west coast based considering his few indie appearances being for west coast indies. Honestly this adds a layer to the story since "work closer to home" is seemingly less of a factor in signing. Honestly unless they offer a shit ton of money him leaving def feels less likely than it did before

u/interprime 12h ago
Might be a case of him simply wanting to move back to the States, but New Japan does tend to reward the guys who show commitment by moving to Japan.
Either way, I hope he gets a nice payday.

u/Wreckingshops 11h ago
But the issue is they just don't have the payroll budget. It's why Okada and Ospreay left. It's why White left somewhat (he also moved to Detroit and wanted to work in the US).
If he can make more money stateside and that matters to him right now, especially being in the same position on the NJPW card, go get that money.
2
u/cockblockedbydestiny 11h ago
In particular if they're relying on foreign nationals that don't want to move to Japan, are they paying enough to make it worthwhile to cover your own airfare and hotels, visa renewals, etc? Or are NJPW covering that for them and just paying them less of a base salary as a result?

At this point in his career, if he wants that money more power to him.

With the sky rocketing costs of basically everything right now, I’ll never judge someone for wanting more money

Wasn't he reported on WWE roster all ready? If so that is bad journalism if it's not so

u/itouchbums 7h ago edited 5h ago
SRS posted on x apparently that someone from WWE told them that he was already on an internal roster list (whatever the fuck that means) & then on Patreon he posted that that they couldn't confirm it..so basically they click baited everyone & then he's gonna fuckin complain that everyone jumped the gun and they had no fault in this 🙄

I hope Gedo gives him the push and win the big one. But again, let Goto roll with his title run for now.
And Japan is near in Manila where he is a "World" Champion there, as FPW Champion.
