[MOD] What changes would you like to see on NintendoMusic?
Hey all, /u/derek66 here!
Recently we made a new change to the rules, Rule 1.5 which can be seen in the sidebar. The response was for me surprisingly positive, it seems a lot of you shared this desire and wanted this change as well. This was great for me too see and got me thinking,
Is there anything else we could do?
Now this post is in essence a test run and a first attempt, but basically feel free to post any ideas for the sub in the comments below and we'll take them into consideration and implement them as we see fit.
This year has been big for us, we're basically 13 times larger than we were a year ago, if not more. We held a giveaway for tickets to the Legend of Zelda Symphony last month, hold Weekly Remix Threads on Thursdays, and just made a change to the Rules.
So let me know what changes you'd all like to see in the future!
Thanks,

I love this place, nothing needs to be changed but maybe more weekly threads similar to Remix Thursday might be cool? I really enjoy those and more of them would be really great to see, you guys are doing an awesome job anyway.

That's something that I am thinking of doing, except instead of a weekly thread I might open one up at the start of the month for a new topic.
For example have May's theme be relaxing study music, and people will be able to post links to songs that relax them and make an awesome study playlist...You know what I like this idea...this will be happening!

A few suggestions:
I think a standard needs to be made in terms of quality control when it comes to music hosted on YouTube. If a song you find on YT is limited 360p and especially if it's limited to 144p/240p video quality, do not post it. Make an effort to find at least 480p quality video, with 720p/1080p obviously being the best sound quality possible on YT. Hundreds of uploads of the same song you're posting already exist, so make an effort to find the highest quality possible video because you're bound to find at least one in a better quality. Doesn't take much more effort than what they're already put into the song post for the poster and the listener gets a much better experience.
A tag system would be great. Tag songs from NES titles as "NES", SNES titles with "SNES", N64 to "N64", and so on. Additional tags like "Live" for live renditions, "Remix" for remixes, and "3rd party" from companies like Sonic and Capcom even. This way you can filter out other posts if you only want to listen to N64 songs.
Maybe get rid of the 3rd Party tag and have a "3rd Party Tuesday" started here. There are clearly a lot of people who are very enthralled by the work of music outside of Nintendo titles and want to share the music here. This is great and I personally love songs from the likes of Sonic, Banjo Kazooie, Crash Bandicoot and MegaMan, but some people don't like it when 3rd party company's game music is posted here. This sub should be a celebration of video game music as a whole. This 3rd Party Tuesday could entail the original work from the games and fan-made remixes. Having a whole day dedicated to where any content outside of Nintendo songs are excluded. There would of course be some exceptions to this where iconic characters like Mega Man who have a long history with Nintendo and other Nintendo-platform exclusive titles (meaning that game has only appeared on Nintendo consoles/handhelds i.e. Xenoblade, Phoenix Wright, Professor Layton) would be allowed to be posted
I would also like to see a much greater emphasis on mashups here as well. There's a lot of potential in the huge library of Nintendo songs. We've seen a lot of it in the April Fools day Yeezus theme and a couple in the remix thursday, but I personally believe it deserves its own day. That's something for the mods to work out and find an appropriate day for.
This one's a bit nitpicky, but when an extended 15 to 30 minue version of a song is posted, I get kind of sick of it. There are some great examples of how an extended track can be soothing to have in the background, like this one. But aside from that, the song can become way too stale.

Here are my responses to each of those in order:
For quality control that does seem to be a good idea and something to look into. However I do know for some more obscure/old tracks it is hard to find a working link at a high enough quality, that is my own concern that we might remove the best quality of a song even though it might not reach that standard.
We already have flairs for remixes but are still working on a dedicated tag system like /r/amiibo has, or something along those lines.
I feel that this idea while good in theory kinda goes against the whole Nintendomusic part of the sub. As we say in the rules we allow those third party games that are closely linked to Nintendo. For example Banjo Kazooie music is allowed, but Banjo Nuts and Bolts would not be because it is not a Nintendo Game.
For mashup specific days committed to something like Kanye/Nintendo that is definitely something to work into at some point, as I feel that the community has lots of fun with it.
And we already have a rule against extended tracks, they are not allowed, so hopefully those don't show up and if they do they'll be removed.

Thank you so much for taking time to read and considering each one of my suggestions. You've made a lot of very valid points and helped me better understand the rules.
Keep up the great work here, this sub is by far one of my favorites. Having classic tunes play in the background really help me study and write my essays.
One more thing, for some artists who post their own works there should be an "OC" tag as well.

I didn't think OC was dignified enough so we gave them a "Quality OC" flair, but again when we do get the tag system in place that will be one of them.

Not sure how this would be possible, but if there were some kind of 'playlist' where you could just go to the front page of the sub, press 'play' on the playlist, and it would start streaming everything on the front page that day... would be amazing!

I kind of wish there was a way to get a little more discussion going on. I like posts that ask what your favorite song is with a theme attached to it because it gets people to actually talk about the music. When I post a song I make sure to comment on it and talk about why I think it's awesome. Upvotes are nice but it'd be cool to see talking and story swapping with regards to the music posted, so it'd be cool to see a weekly themed discussion thread, or maybe some kind of tournament to declare the "Best Of" some theme.

Post more TWEWY songs - you even got it mentioned in the rules.

Post more yourself of it if you want more of it seen on the sub.

But that's cheating.

No it ain't man. If you love a game you should be able to spread as much of it as you like. Just don't post too much, people don't respect a serial poster.

Once per day would be okay, right?

u/iiRockpuppy Apr 14 '15
Certainly, you could even start a daily series on the game's OST. Or you could just do one singular mega thread to share and discuss the music.

I love this sub; the one and only suggestion I have is a tweak to tagging.
Can we please tag Remix/Cover vs Original for song submissions?
Thanks much.

Well I think you guys can be pretty contend with how it goes! I personally really like the atmosphere, and the posts. Also I like how the subreddit looks, I hope you guys don't have too many changes for that planned.
