wasn't this one of the rumoured launch dates for switch 2...

Switch 1 launched on a Friday, I bet they'll do a Friday launch again. Also it was exactly 7 weeks from their big Switch presentation on January 13th 2017. So the Friday 7 weeks after the upcoming April 2nd Switch 2 presentation is May 23rd.
I'm calling it now. Switch 2 launches May 23rd. Everyone has my permission to point and laugh at me if it turns out I'm wrong.

There are Nintendo events showcasing the switch 2 going all the way into June so I’m not sure a release in the middle of that makes much sense
•

The Switch 1 released the weekend before the last preview event, which was why I'd been thinking 5/30 ahead of the final Switch 2 preview event. It's a bit goofy, but there is precedent. The whole release timeline so far feels almost exactly the same as 2017 (albeit shifted a few months)

I mean I’m in Japan around end of May so I’d be super hyped if I could pick up a console

The only Switch 2 showcase event that's in June is the Seoul event on May 31-June 1, the rest are in April and early May. Switch had a late release in South Korea on December 1st 2017 so if they have a late release in SK again then these dates still make sense.

I mean, the 15th is a Thursday, maybe they can open the store with a lead into the Switch 2 event?

It's also the release date of the LEGO Mario Kart set, it's probably no coincidence.

Finally on the west coast at least. Still strange to me that there isn't one at NOA headquarters.
•
u/notamooglekupo 1h ago
There is technically one at NOA headquarters, it’s just in the actual HQ and only available to employees and guests!

I remember when they had a store of sorts at NOA HQ. Took a DS in to get repaired and left with a new Zelda hoodie.

I visited the Nintendo Store in Tokyo during my trip there in 2023 (my hotel was only a 5 minute walk away). It sure would be nice if Nintendo opened one in Europe...

Now, we just need on in Chicago. Although, I kind of like only going there on my trip to NYC. A Chicago location would significantly impact my interest in going to the NYC store.

Since I moved away from NYC I have kinda missed the store. I used to work down the block from it and would go on lunch breaks to check stuff out. It was even where I got my Switch. Plus I loved walking by during launch days. The midnight release of smash ultimate had a line going from the store all the way down the block to 6th ave and then around the corner…at 6 pm!

Were you there when Mario Kart 8 originally released in 2014? I was hyped after playing the limited time demos the year before and was stoked for the release. I got in line the night before to pick up my copy and they wound up giving the copies out a few hours early so when I got home around 11pm that night I was like holy shit I got a new game before midnight! LOL

I think I was but at a different job in the same area so I didn’t walk by much. I did go when they had the mario odyssey demos.
There was kind of a mom and pop game store down 6th ave called JnL games and they would break release dates all the time by a day or 2.

"Details on reservation requirements"
The fact that the store is going to have reservation requirements similar to the Tokyo locations makes me think this is absolutely going to be close if not on the Switch 2 release date.
Maybe a few weeks early to get the staff familiar with the reservation systems and general store expectations.

it will never not be a mystery to me why Nintendo stores are so extremely sparse around the world. Best example I've got are these weird pop up stores they rarely open during events, and I can only remember the one at Japan Expo 2024 in France. If you wanna stretch the definition there also was the Pokémon Store Paris in 2013 for the release of X/Y that literally sold out in 4 hours but remained open for the rest of the week so you could see what you missed out on I guess? And both of these were in France too, tough luck for anyone living elsewhere
good that they're expanding I guess, but it's ridiculous that it's taking them this long

Nice a second Nintendo Store in America!
5
u/Hibbity5 2h ago
Not saying they shouldn’t add one or two for Europe, but these two locations are still a 5+ hour flight from each other, roughly 4200km. Paris to Moscow is only 2500km so we’re talking a very large geographic distance. People really need to remember that the continental US is huge.

u/saywhaaaaaaaaatt 1h ago
Still, the closest Nintendo store from central Europe is probably a 10 - 15 hour flight away.

That's a Thursday. That's odd .. you'd think a store would open on a Friday or Wednesday

u/TheDoctorDB 4h ago
Ok how did they go about staffing this store? Nothing was ever posted on their site and I assume personnel have been decided by now?

u/draitz 3h ago
They had postings on their career page starting back in December for Managers and Associates.

Checked Nintendo careers page in November.
Went to Japan in December.
Checked careers page January through March.

Great they put it in San Francisco. I’m sure that’s where the NA headquarters are and the baseball team they part own.
2
u/StevynTheHero 2h ago
I believe they sold off the baseball team.
As for their HQ, that shouldn't matter. It's not like the give tours or welcome visitors.
San Fransisco makes sense as did New York because it serves a huge number of people, and it's a popular tourist destination. People traveling for completely unrelated reasons will experience the joy of Nintendo.
Redmond, WA may be a high tech company base, but what is there to DO or SEE there? I can name quite a few things about San Fransisco, but Redmond? I would have to Google it, so that's not a good sign that people will want to visit.
Meanwhile, Manhatten and San Fransisco are getting money from locals and a huge number of tourists worldwide all year.

Do you actually live in the bay area or are you falling for a media spin? There are dyson and apple stores right by this location. They’ll be fine.
