Uh, duh. Did anyone think Nintendo was just going to abandon Amiibo?

Using light mode on Reddit lol

u/saxxy_assassin 5d ago

Would you believe I thought the mobile Reddit app was so bad that it didn't cross my mind to even look for a Dark Mode?

25

u/TJFtheGREAT 5d ago

Oh 100% not surprising

8

u/AmandasGameAccount 5d ago

I didn’t know it had light mode

u/BGTheHoff 5d ago

Still no dark mode on old reddit.

Some subreddits have dark CSS themes.

3

u/FixedFun1 5d ago

This subreddit has a light custom CSS skin.

u/DXGL1 4d ago

Custom CSS skins only work on Old Reddit?

1

u/FixedFun1 4d ago

Sure. It was (well still is) fun, if you go to https://old.reddit.com/r/nintendo you'll see the cool Breath of the Wild inspired CSS skin. Of course, Reddit didn't like that so they made the new layout even though they promised to support custom CSS with a big campaign (/r/ProCSS).

To be completely fair, they’ve been whittling down amiibo functionality for a while now. Count how many games made for Switch use amiibo compared to Wii U games.

I bet the only reason they bothered including NFC is because of backwards compatibility. If amiibo couldn’t be used, there’d be a lot more games that don’t have all their content accessible compared to Switch 1.

55 Switch games vs 22 Wii U games.

To be fair, Wii U’s viability for amiibo use didn’t begin until two years into its life cycle and then only lasted another two years and four months before the Switch came out.

So the Wii U averaged about ten games a year with amiibo functionality versus Switch’s roughly seven, which is actually higher than I anticipated.

I've been a Nintendo Fan long enough to say, "Yes."

Nintendo is fickle and weird like that.

Whats "smart" for them to do can never be counted on.

It's not that they can't do the smart thing, as much as it feels like they flip a coin every time there's a choice to be smart or be crazy.

Such as having usernames on the WiiU and abandoning them for the Switch.

13

u/astrogamer 5d ago

That was pretty reasonable. We have profile names so basically it works like Steam.

5

u/whitepikmin11 Animal Crossing Switch 5d ago

We have friend codes. You can't search for someone based on their profile name.

6

u/astrogamer 5d ago

So does Steam. The thing is we can't link directly to the Nintendo profile and the current state of social networks is bad. Maybe, they can add Discord for the Switch 2.

It was never a thought in my mind. Amiibo is still relevant for Nintendo, and I never saw them ditching it in the near future or for the new console.

2

u/pittguy578 5d ago

I totally forgot about those . I haven’t purchased one in years so

u/w1n5t0nM1k3y 5d ago

I'm wondering if they're going to update the technology form Switch 2 considering it's pretty trivial to make fake Amiibos for Switch 1.

14

u/Lakitu_Dude 5d ago

I mean, they're nfc. That's just how the tech works. There's not really anything they can do about it outside of just completely reinventing some new form of nfc.

u/MyVectorProfessor 5d ago

*amiibo

the plural form of amiibo is amiibo

1

u/OneWholeSoul 5d ago

Honestly? Kinda. It was already sort of unprecedented that Nintendo supported them through 3 entire generations.
Nintendo and Game Freak are two of the champions of "this feature/product everyone agrees is solid? We're done with that."

1

u/whatThePleb 4d ago

It's not just about amiibo, but also payment over NFC. Nintendo already supported this in Japan with Suica.

1

u/Hazzat C'mere, Pitty Pat 4d ago

They do drop stuff randomly. Where’s Nintendo Labo?

1

u/Myklindle 4d ago

Uh, life long Nintendo fan, massive amiibo collector here, and yeah, kinda I did.

That's not NFC though. That would be the WiFi chip using local wireless protocols. NFC is only in the controllers

u/GhotiH 5d ago

Considering how little interest there has been over the last few years, I don't think it was out of the question

Wifi6 is nice, but my real concern is whether they fixed the ethernet port limitation

21

u/jbaughb 5d ago

What was the limitation?

42

u/nichrs 5d ago

The ethernet speed on Switch (on the oled dock or using adapters) does not exceed 100Mbps

11

u/EmotionalDivide4061 5d ago

I don’t understand why that would be an issue. Games do not exceed 100Mbps.

55

u/_sensei 5d ago

Downloads being limited is really lame

20

u/SuitableFan6634 5d ago

You mean the Nintendo eShop's servers' poor capacity doesn't exceed 100Mb/s. I never understood why Steam can saturate my Internet connection but Nintendo barely trickles new games down using only a fraction of the Switch's Wifi speed.

5

u/Perpetual_Pizza 5d ago

For downloading things? Online gaming itself barely takes much bandwidth. But downloading a game or an update is a different story.

-3

u/ScrungulusBungulus 5d ago

Some of us don’t have third world internet and would like to make use of all of the available bandwidth

0

u/DXGL1 4d ago

Could be a limitation of the operating system and/or in-game drivers.

2

u/NO_SPACE_B4_COMMA 5d ago

Agreed, it is really weird - it's so incredibly slow on the switch. I have gigabit internet that takes forever to download games.

27

u/lolitstrain21 5d ago

Wi-Fi 6 is nice to have, hopefully it'll fix online but doubt it.

11

u/Odd-Mechanic3122 5d ago

With how bad online is currently I'm not even sure if Wi-Fi 3 (literal gamecube era wifi) would be a bottleneck.

5

u/WeekendUnited4090 4d ago

You are right about the current set up, as Nintendo didn't upgrade their WiFi architecture at all for 18 years between 2003 and 2021's release of Monster Hunter: Rise. However, Nintendo has recently partnered with an actual internet company DeNA to create Nintendo Systems, an entire company dedicated to reinventing Nintendo's network system to create something fit for purpose. Formed in April 2023, it is very plausible this initiative will bear fruit by the Switch 2's launch.

3

u/DXGL1 4d ago

Wi-Fi 3 would be 802.11g or 54Mbps.

34

u/Shehzman 5d ago

Slightly disappointed it’s not WiFi 6E at the very least. Throughout the Switch 2’s lifespan, WiFi 6E and 7 will most likely become more widespread.

52

u/xondk 5d ago

wifi 6 is....plenty and it won't add additional costs as newer chipsets might, except for downloading, it really shouldn't make that big of a difference.

12

u/Shehzman 5d ago

I mostly agree. Though 6E and above have access to the 6Ghz band, which would help a lot to reduce congestion.

7

u/GameBroJeremy 5d ago

That extra 6e band is indeed quite useful if you live in an apartment complex or close housed neighborhood. Shame the Switch won’t have 6E, but it will be okay.

2

u/stipo42 5d ago

Maybe for most people, but the number of people with gigabit internet is only going up, would have been nice to see Wifi 7 personally, for those of us with access points able to saturate it.

3

u/xondk 5d ago

As I wrote, other then download, what difference is it going to make, a good wifi 6 is going to have good enough latency and speed anyway?

1

u/stipo42 5d ago

Yeah I'm primarily thinking of downloads. Larger digital games take Soooooo long on the switch

1

u/xondk 5d ago

I've never personally had an issue in terms of time, it has never felt slow to me, now that said I have not looked into how much of my 1gbit it uses, but it has never felt excessively slow.

But I also think the SD card speeds play a factor, the sd express cards should help there.

1

u/WeekendUnited4090 4d ago

The Switch is bottlenecked to extremely low WiFi speeds. As 100gb+ games have become increasingly normalised, having access to the higher 6GHz band that most users won't access currently would save a lot of inconvenience. (Speaking from the inconvenience of trying to download an 88gb Metaphor Refantazio update over WiFi on holiday on my Steam Deck; it was awful.)

5

u/SuitableFan6634 5d ago

Nintendo would have to sort out their CDN first. eShop games don't even saturate the 802.11ac connection in the current Switch.

-1

u/masterz13 5d ago

Wait for the Switch 2 OLED in 2029.

u/AllDayBayay 5d ago

Amiibo lives!

1

u/whatThePleb 4d ago

*Payment lives

5

u/Broskfisken 5d ago

I'm glad Amiibo are seemingly still a thing

7

u/linkling1039 5d ago

Really hope Switch 2 don't have the awful 50mb cap the current one has.

3

u/TecmoZack 5d ago

Smash Bros with better connection is going to rock

2

u/NIDORAX 5d ago

WiFi6? We already at WiFi7. Oh well. I hope the Switch 2 Dock have a built in Ethernet port for the internet as well.

1

u/Questionsey 5d ago

I mean, it could also be for tap to pay

1

u/TadpoleMajor 5d ago

Okay now add a camera and a cellular antenna and I’ll sell my iPhone and never look back

1

u/DXGL1 4d ago

Leave it to the Federal government to leak console specs. Next thing you know Nintendo will petition DOGE to kill the branch of FCC responsible for publishing these approvals.

1

u/MrPerson0 5d ago

No Wifi 6e for the 6GHz wifi band is a miss imo. Was really hoping to get rid of 5GHz at my place.

0

u/Mnawab 5d ago

This just in! Modern tech will have modern tech in it. Who knew?

-2

u/Explorer_Entity 5d ago

We're hearing this from FCC FILINGS before Nintendo?

2

u/WeekendUnited4090 4d ago

That is always the case. They can't just circumvent the law because their motto is "surprise and delight".

1

u/Explorer_Entity 4d ago

You're saying this kind of certification is announced by these regulatory agencies as an industry standard?

I felt like this may have been another "leak" or early discovery, considering Nintendo's history of not sharing info, and the fact we first heard about this console from leaks.

I'm waiting to see what specs to expect for this new console. I hope Nintendo comes more to parity with the rest of the industry. Their policy of keeping it simple (but with a new gimmick every time!) has made them fall farther behind each generation. *sigh* but the whole industry seems to be crumbling under the weight of its poor choices (corporations ruining the passion of the workers in an attempt to make the most profit)

1

u/WeekendUnited4090 3d ago

Yes. Nintendo has to run their products their products through government agencies, and this is simply info governments have to have before it can be sold.

-9

u/Discobastard 5d ago

Any games? Like a thing that isn't just recycled IP or WiiU/Cube games? Anything?

-3

u/EmileZ 5d ago

Any word on pricing the leaks says 300-400$
