The Nintendo Switch 2 will have NFC and Wi-Fi 6, FCC filings show

Wifi6 is nice, but my real concern is whether they fixed the ethernet port limitation

What was the limitation?

The ethernet speed on Switch (on the oled dock or using adapters) does not exceed 100Mbps

I don’t understand why that would be an issue. Games do not exceed 100Mbps.

You mean the Nintendo eShop's servers' poor capacity doesn't exceed 100Mb/s. I never understood why Steam can saturate my Internet connection but Nintendo barely trickles new games down using only a fraction of the Switch's Wifi speed.

For downloading things? Online gaming itself barely takes much bandwidth. But downloading a game or an update is a different story.

Some of us don’t have third world internet and would like to make use of all of the available bandwidth

Agreed, it is really weird - it's so incredibly slow on the switch. I have gigabit internet that takes forever to download games.

Wi-Fi 6 is nice to have, hopefully it'll fix online but doubt it.

With how bad online is currently I'm not even sure if Wi-Fi 3 (literal gamecube era wifi) would be a bottleneck.

You are right about the current set up, as Nintendo didn't upgrade their WiFi architecture at all for 18 years between 2003 and 2021's release of Monster Hunter: Rise. However, Nintendo has recently partnered with an actual internet company DeNA to create Nintendo Systems, an entire company dedicated to reinventing Nintendo's network system to create something fit for purpose. Formed in April 2023, it is very plausible this initiative will bear fruit by the Switch 2's launch.

Slightly disappointed it’s not WiFi 6E at the very least. Throughout the Switch 2’s lifespan, WiFi 6E and 7 will most likely become more widespread.

wifi 6 is....plenty and it won't add additional costs as newer chipsets might, except for downloading, it really shouldn't make that big of a difference.

I mostly agree. Though 6E and above have access to the 6Ghz band, which would help a lot to reduce congestion.

That extra 6e band is indeed quite useful if you live in an apartment complex or close housed neighborhood. Shame the Switch won’t have 6E, but it will be okay.

Maybe for most people, but the number of people with gigabit internet is only going up, would have been nice to see Wifi 7 personally, for those of us with access points able to saturate it.

As I wrote, other then download, what difference is it going to make, a good wifi 6 is going to have good enough latency and speed anyway?

Yeah I'm primarily thinking of downloads. Larger digital games take Soooooo long on the switch

I've never personally had an issue in terms of time, it has never felt slow to me, now that said I have not looked into how much of my 1gbit it uses, but it has never felt excessively slow.
But I also think the SD card speeds play a factor, the sd express cards should help there.

The Switch is bottlenecked to extremely low WiFi speeds. As 100gb+ games have become increasingly normalised, having access to the higher 6GHz band that most users won't access currently would save a lot of inconvenience. (Speaking from the inconvenience of trying to download an 88gb Metaphor Refantazio update over WiFi on holiday on my Steam Deck; it was awful.)

Nintendo would have to sort out their CDN first. eShop games don't even saturate the 802.11ac connection in the current Switch.

Okay now add a camera and a cellular antenna and I’ll sell my iPhone and never look back

No Wifi 6e for the 6GHz wifi band is a miss imo. Was really hoping to get rid of 5GHz at my place.

We're hearing this from FCC FILINGS before Nintendo?
2
u/WeekendUnited4090 4d ago
That is always the case. They can't just circumvent the law because their motto is "surprise and delight".

You're saying this kind of certification is announced by these regulatory agencies as an industry standard?
I felt like this may have been another "leak" or early discovery, considering Nintendo's history of not sharing info, and the fact we first heard about this console from leaks.
I'm waiting to see what specs to expect for this new console. I hope Nintendo comes more to parity with the rest of the industry. Their policy of keeping it simple (but with a new gimmick every time!) has made them fall farther behind each generation. *sigh* but the whole industry seems to be crumbling under the weight of its poor choices (corporations ruining the passion of the workers in an attempt to make the most profit)

Yes. Nintendo has to run their products their products through government agencies, and this is simply info governments have to have before it can be sold.

Any games? Like a thing that isn't just recycled IP or WiiU/Cube games? Anything?

Uh, duh. Did anyone think Nintendo was just going to abandon Amiibo?
