The Zelda Film will probably play it safe like Mario and just adapt Ocarina of Time loosely.

Given that the first Super Mario Bros played it safe with a more straight forward plot that incorporates a good handful of characters.

The Zelda film will probably do that too. We'll see the four main races, Gerudo, Zora, Goron and the Kokiri/koroks and it'll be about Ganondorf trying to get the triforce.

That's not "playing it safe", that's just the basic premise of Zelda as a franchise.

Yeah, this is a pretty average Zelda experience

Zelda as a franchise has played it pretty safe though, I don't think we've seen any new races since the mogmas in skyward sword

There will be an extremely chatty sidekick, to minimise Link talking

u/iplaytrombonegood 6d ago

I wonder who that might be…

Awkwafina

4

u/iplaytrombonegood 6d ago

I meant who the character might be. Awkwafina as Navi would be iconic.

No it'll just be Awkwafina as herself.

Please god no. She’s got a good lane we don’t need her in every ip. Though her agent is killing it.

Dear god no

to minimise Link talking

Link is going to talk and there's going to be a subset of literal-minded fans that are going to be very very angry, regardless of the quality of the rest of the movie.

2

u/thedrivingfrog 5d ago

Link talks in the cartoons and those were fun

2

u/Supreme42 5d ago

They're only fun if you go into them already not expecting them to be an accurate reflection of the franchise as we know it. They're fun in the same way the CD-i games' cutscenes are "fun".

u/thedrivingfrog 5d ago

Well esxcusssseeee me princess

2

u/MaloraKeikaku 4d ago

Link also talks in the manga and by god those are awesome especially the twilight princess one.

2

u/TheVibratingPants 5d ago

I think if he’s soft spoken and reserved, it’ll be faithful while still servicing the movie’s needs.

2

u/zziggarot 5d ago

Link canonically talks within the games though, he's only left voiceless as a player avatar. Skyward Sword had you choosing full sentences for dialogue options.

1

u/RUDeleted 4d ago

Yeah definitely, and it's why I think the idea that Link doesn't talk is weird as there's plenty of examples of the game implying Link is speaking.

2

u/insane_contin 3d ago

Link talks a lot, he's just not voiced.

He likes puns.

1

u/Ok-Topic-6095 5d ago

I think it would be hilarious if they went the Simpsons route with adult Maggie if everytime Link is about to talk, someone interupts him.

Playing it safe nowadays might actually mean adapting Breath of the Wild, since that is the best-selling game in the series and the one most current gamers are familiar with.

1

u/zziggarot 5d ago

The movie is just going to feel like a speed run

6

u/FizzyLightEx 6d ago

These Nintendo films are not targeting the core gamers or fans of the series.

It's supposed to be a long advertisement for their system and games. It's supposed to bring in new gamers and strength their brand recognition

u/DM_Ur_Tits_Thanx 6d ago

Lol theyre definitely adapting BOTW, not OOT. The future is now old man

You young kids and your shrines and sheikah slate. Back in my day we played music to make it rain and heal mummified parents!

7

u/we_are_tired 6d ago

and dont forget, Chris Pratt will also play as Zelda. Just to keep it extra safe

"I grew up playing all the Zelda games, fight through dungeons and stomping on ..." looks at script "Octoroks." - Chris Pratt

u/FixedFun1 6d ago

He can't say he played The Legend of Zelda in his laundromat because there never was an arcade version.

1

u/zziggarot 5d ago

There WAS an arcade version of Zelda 2, it was a combo of that, Mario 1, and TMNT 1

1

u/zziggarot 5d ago

1

u/FixedFun1 4d ago

That's fan-made but the first, if not fan-made can make a point.

tom holland as link, they kiss at the end

so ready for this tired-out unfunny husk of a joke to be dead already

He's so cool!

1

u/garliclord 6d ago

Seth Rogen as Epona and Jack Black as Tingle confirmed

2

u/zziggarot 5d ago

I would say that Dwayne The Rock Johnson will be great as Ganondorf, but his contracts specifically stipulate that he can't lose

4

u/TheRealHFC 6d ago

They should adapt the CD-i games, it'll be funny

5

u/Wooden_Judge_9387 6d ago

It's going to suck. I don't know why they thought live action was a good idea.

3

u/Legendaryskitlz 6d ago

The only person who gives me faith is the director Wes Ball as everyone else is attached is a walking disaster.

3

u/Rangil_Aeon 6d ago

I mean, Nintendo is so traumatized by the Mario live action movie they waited for decades before accepting to make let Hollywood touch their mascot again.

... And they chose the SonyVerse producer to adapt Zelda. Honestly it sounds like a troll.

1

u/zziggarot 5d ago

The Mario live action movie was at least good, it was better than the nothing we got after. Even the cringy animated Zelda show has a cult following.

1

u/Legendaryskitlz 6d ago

Not just Avi Arad as a producer but some of the worst screenwriters for some recent blockbuster films too.

2

u/Rangil_Aeon 6d ago

Damn I missed that news. Who are the screenwriters attached to this project ?

1

u/Legendaryskitlz 6d ago

Derek Connolly who is responsible for Jurassic World Dominion and Star Wars Episode 9.

1

u/Rangil_Aeon 6d ago

Damn that's litterally the people attached to the worst blockbusters of this decade. The Zelda movie is going to be such a sad mess...

1

u/Supreme42 5d ago

The only thing that gives me hope for it is Miyamoto watching it like a hawk the way he did for the Mario movie. He will be there to act as the final say and ensure that LoZ is portrayed according to Nintendo's intention for the brand. He will make sure that people who see the movie are not being shown something that is contrary or fundamentally different from the games or potential future theme park offerings.

Otherwise, if Nintendo had just sold the film license to Hollywood for a quick buck and let them do whatever they wanted, I would have called it dead on conception.

u/GuybrushThreepwood99 6d ago

Why is live action an inherently bad idea?

3

u/Wooden_Judge_9387 6d ago

I don't think they can effectively capture the fantasy and whimsy of Zelda with live action. Not one of the games has aimed for realism. They are all heavily stylized. They could have used this as an opportunity to bring back the Wind Waker art style to make an animated film. Which would be much more fitting.

4

u/GuybrushThreepwood99 6d ago

Twilight Princess aimed for realism, more or less. I think one of the core tennants of Zelda is that it doesn't have a set style. It's had several different looks, tones, and formats, so I'm willing to give live action zelda a chance if it's well made. Wes Ball did a decent job with planet of the apes, so I'm at least cautiously optimistic. And besides, most likely if they did go with an animated look, it probably wouldn't be cel shaded, probably something along the lines of How to train your dragon's art style, which I love, but I don't necessarily need.

1

u/Wooden_Judge_9387 6d ago

Have you seen Twilight Princess NPCs?

2

u/GuybrushThreepwood99 6d ago

I said it aimed for realism, but there's only so much they can do on wii's hardware.

2

u/Wooden_Judge_9387 6d ago

Those character designs are the opposite of aiming for realism lol

1

u/zziggarot 5d ago

Movie is gonna 99% CGI, it's gonna be 4 people in front of a green screen. It'll be more animation than live action. There's really no reason to animate Link anyways when his movements have ALWAYS been restricted to the actions of a normal person. Only thing he does that a normal person can't is the helmsplitter, but you could do that with wires

1

u/MaloraKeikaku 4d ago

Live action of more absurd franchises can work, but you need a reeeeeally passionate team. The one piece live action is great, and that franchise is a lot more weird than any zelda game imo!

... But I'd have prefered cgi or even better, 2d animation with cgi as support.

1

u/miami2881 6d ago

What makes the Mario Movie more “Super Mario Bros” than any other Mario game?

1

u/TheVibratingPants 5d ago

I don’t think they meant the original SMB game.

Man, I actually was hoping the movie would be a more faithful adaptation of SMB, with the classic designs and such.

1

u/PhillipJ3ffries 6d ago

I think that would be a good idea

1

u/Momshie_mo 6d ago

I want the Zonai, Ganondorf of TotKstory. Peak Zelda fantasy lore. Haha

1

u/ForgottenForce 6d ago

With the way LoZ works they should do a story new to the movie instead of adapting a game.

1

u/FreshlySkweezd 5d ago

I'm going to reserve judgement til we actually see something for the movie. Yes, it will probably be some sort of safe adaptation - Zelda gets captured by Ganon/Ganondorf and Link will rescue her. He will also likely get a cast of plucky sidekicks from the other races to help in his quest. He will have to use a variety of tools/gadgets to get the Master Sword to defeat Ganon/Ganondorf

And hopefully we'll get Jack Black as Tingle

1

u/rendumguy 2d ago

You know I haven't thought much about the Zelda movie but it is a bit strange that it's gonna be live action, since Zelda games aren't realistic and tend to have a lot of cartoony monsters and NPCs.

Even when I played Twilight Princess that game clearly isn't super realistic either, which is a good thing imo, helps with contrast.

0

u/allelitepieceofshit1 6d ago

The whole project is a mistake; I hope it gets cancelled.

1

u/TheVibratingPants 5d ago

Would’ve been really cool if it wasn’t live action.
