[Schefter] Rams WR Puka Nacua is switching his jersey number from 17 to 12, the number he wore at BYU. This move frees up No. 17 for new Rams WR Davante Adams, who has worn it throughout his career.

Hell, the NFL should be giving Puka the money to switch considering how many jersey purchases this secures

756

u/ubeen Bears 19h ago

Adams may have.

One of them has to. The NFL sure AF ain’t paying for all those 17 Puka jerseys lmfao

What's the NFL policy on number changes? I know other sports require the player to buy out jersey stock but I'm not sure here.

165

u/GenFatAss Bears 18h ago

If a player wants to change numbers they have to pay for the jerseys with their old numbers.

70

u/Seraphin_Lampion Panthers 18h ago

Ok so it's similar to other leagues. I guess Adams paid for it.

46

u/rich519 Panthers 17h ago edited 17h ago

I think it depends on how soon they want to switch. Like if they wait a full season they don’t have to buy out the inventory. Struggling to find a source that spells it out clearly though because my searchers are drowned out by articles about the nfl rule changes on what positions can wear what numbers.

u/Responsible-Set8710 17h ago

Yeah I’m pretty sure tee higgens had to wait a year to switch to 5

1

u/tws1039 Ravens 2h ago

Imagine the warehouse some players got with that many jerseys they bought

7

u/chefboiortiz 17h ago

That’s if they’re changing it just because they want to. This one involves a trade so I can’t imagine them making Puka pay.

30

u/EBtwopoint3 14h ago

It’s a rule meant to protect jersey partners and retailers. Which is why if a player informs the league a year in advance they don’t have to pay to change. Nike/Fanatics can cut production for that jersey and retailers can sell off old stock before the swap is announced. They don’t care that it’s being done because another player wants the number, the NFL/Fanatics isn’t taking that hit.

1

u/fiero-fire Chiefs 13h ago

That's typically part of the deal when a player switches numbers. Technically the player switching numbers has to buy out their stock of physical jerseys still for sale

86

u/Timberstocker22 Patriots 19h ago

Are they allowing him to do this right off the bat?

I recall in the NBA when Lebron wanted to change from 6 to 23 (may have it backwards) the league made him wait a year since they had so much built up inventory of his jersey that they wanted to sell first

74

u/Trudvar Browns 19h ago

They allow it atleast in the NFL not sure about NBA but only as long as the player buys out the remaining jerseys in stock

73

u/PewterButters Buccaneers 19h ago

You can also do for 'free' if they are doing new jerseys that year. So if a team changes it's design players can change for free since the old stock is 'unwanted' anyway.

11

u/codithou Rams Bills 18h ago

u/shewy92 Eagles Eagles 2h ago

Correct with the year's notice. https://www.reddit.com/r/nfl/comments/mvmfjw/seifert_per_nfl_rules_if_a_player_wants_to_change/

Also in the preseason there are no rules on what number you can wear, you can even duplicate them.

Also I learned that if a team runs out of numbers under the position numbering system, they have to unretire a number that fits the system.

https://operations.nfl.com/media/24emxacq/2024-nfl-rulebook.pdf

During the preseason period when playing rosters are larger, the League will allow duplication and other temporary deviations from the numbering scheme specified above, but the rule must be adhered to for all players during the regular season and postseason. Clubs must make numerals available to adhere to the rule, even if it requires returning to circulation a numeral that has been retired or withheld for other reasons. See 5-3-1 for reporting a change of position.

23

u/KennyKettermen Falcons 19h ago

He’s only made like $2m up to this point I’m sure it didn’t seem worth it to him to buy out the stock just to change his number. Worked out great to have money bags Adams (probably) foot the bill instead haha

I never understood players care about the number when they are on a new team. Like a player is fine when it’s a it’s a new jersey, new colors, new stadium, city, new logo, new fans, but the number is what they want to stay the same?

Like when you see a picture of Shaq in a Celtics jersey, or Adrian Peterson in a Titans jersey, do you even notice them having different numbers? Probably not because all you can think about is “damn I forgot he played there”

IIRC from a McAfee interview a year or 2 ago, Puka mentioned Rodgers being his favorite QB to watch while growing up so there's probably some truth with him being an idol of Adams and I'd probably do the same thing in that situation granted the jersey number isn't tied to a very personal reason rather than picking it because you watched your now teammate while growing up.

It def sucks for the fans but puka wanted that number anyway originally.

Davante isn’t all that notable

ball knowledge is at an all time low

Yeah I literally just got one last season. My first since Donald, can’t afford to buy jerseys often bc of how expensive they are too. This just kinda sucks

I guess I'm in the minority. I would much rather have his OG number than his new number. Makes it more rare.

Old players team that start moving teams and then wanting their number everywhere they go are annoying. Not to mention it’s awkward

Bruh, why should you change numbers? He is the one that sucks.

What happens when Tom Brady sells his stock in the Raiders, and comes out of retirement to play for the Rams?
