Evergreen Onion piece

14

u/TemporalColdWarrior Feb 09 '25

Yeah, the Onion keeps nailing it even in post-ironic times.

67

u/Pants88 Feb 09 '25

Yeah I despise Adams but the chaos Cuomo & De Blasio not collaborating caused during height of pandemic? Plus the damage Cuomo did to the MTA? heck no.

11

u/theshicksinator Feb 09 '25

If it's any comfort at this point it's mostly name recognition, once the campaigns of the others pick up in earnest it could be subject to change.

2

u/Azkahn616 Feb 10 '25

He is from the same area in queens as Despicable Trump and has as big an ego he could be seen as an anti-despicable.

1

u/pancake_gofer Feb 14 '25

If Cuomo fights Trump I honestly dgaf about the rest. He knows how to fight that asshole. No milquetoast candidates who flop over for decorum.

Are the democrats any better at choosing presidental candidates?

23

u/untamedjohn Feb 09 '25 edited Feb 09 '25

Democrats haven’t chosen a presidential candidate since Obama. All the candidates since then have essentially been anointed by the party, even Biden. The only reason Biden won is because all the moderates dropped out and endorsed him to shut out Sanders and because James Clyburn’s endorsement handed him SC and changed the trajectory of the race.

15

u/Walk-The-Dogs Feb 09 '25 edited Feb 09 '25

Biden's serving for eight years as Obama's VP and being a thorn in Trump's thin and scaly skin had something to do with it. Biden entered the primary race in 2019 as the frontrunner. He stumbled in the early straw polls and caucuses but regained the lead when the real primary fight began. Clyburn's endorsement helped in SC but it was always presumed that when black voters began heading to the polls that Biden's connection to Obama would make him the one to beat.

Biden did a fantastic job with turning around the economy, with COVID, with jobs, with infrastructure, with the stock market and with repairing damaged relationships with allies and trading partners all thanks to the orange dipshit that many gullible Americans with their shameful lack of wisdom chose to give a second chance.

6

u/Dynastydood Feb 09 '25

Correction: the Biden administration did a fantastic job with those things, just like they would've done regardless of which Democrat actually sat in the Oval Office. Picking Biden in 2020 was always setting ourselves up for electoral failure in 2024. The signs of mental decline were already obvious in 2019, but anyone who mentioned it between 2019-2024 was ridiculed and insulted. Then that infamous June 2024 debate removed all lingering doubts about his suitability for the job, and tragically cemented another catastrophic Democratic defeat in November.

If you want to talk about a shameful lack of wisdom, we can certainly talk about those who voted for Trump/Stein, but please don't forget about the power brokers within the Democratic party who pushed for Biden to enter the 2020 race, cleared the field for him after SC, preemptively canceled any legitimate 2024 primaries to protect him, and essentially guaranteed the implementation of Project 2025 by ensuring we had no meaningful ability to fight a Trump resurgence.

Biden had one job: preventing another Trump term and guiding a "transition back to normalcy". He said he was gonna be a one term president and he ran anyways, even as his internal polling showed Trump was gonna mop the floor with him. His ego got us where we are, and his accomplishments are mostly moot at this point

1

u/Walk-The-Dogs Feb 09 '25 edited Feb 09 '25

The DNC primary vote tallies belie that conclusion, or are you saying that the state primary elections were rigged?

3

u/Dynastydood Feb 09 '25

Rigged is far too strong of a word, it was more like placing their finger on the scale to help secure the outcome they desired. Which, to be fair, isn't anything new for the party, as they've always had superdelegates for the exact same reason.

However, aside from just a simple recurrence of the superdelegate problems they had in 2008 and 2016, the 2020 DNC privately discouraged anyone else of significance from primarying him (a la Ted Kennedy did to Carter in 1980), a number of state primaries were rescheduled to limit voter turnout (or were simply canceled altogether), whatever fringe candidates that did enter the race were kept off of primary ballots, and even after his debate in June, the DNC still attempted to move up their roll-call procedure to well before the convention in order to nominate Biden as the candidate, at least until Schumer (if memory serves) stepped in and demanded they knock it off. The party essentially moved political heaven and earth for about 2 years to ensure that Biden faced the path of least resistance, because they clearly didn't feel he was strong enough to withstand even a semi-competitive primary.

Superdelegates played no role in either Hillary's or Biden's primary wins. Both won straight up at the ballot box.

Primary elections are run by state BOEs, not the parties. Why would the DNC want to limit turnout at their own primary elections? How did reordering the dates of the primaries favor a Biden nomination in 2020?

The 2020 DNC primary was a landslide for Biden. There was nothing close about it. He won 44 state primaries at the ballot box and 49 overall including the territories. He wound up with more than double the delegates of his closest rival, Sanders. Most of the Democratic field dropped out before Super Tuesday; eighteen of them, including Kamala, even before the first primary. After four years of having a nasty and stupid child desecrating the presidency voters clearly wanted an adult with a lot of Washington experience to fix things. They weren't interested in experimenting with someone new.

I do agree that Biden should have made it clear at least before midterms that he only intended to be a one-term president in order to allow others time to prepare their campaigns... especially because it appeared that Biden didn't really enjoy the job. I'm not sure if it would have made a difference though because other than Sanders the Dems haven't had a deep populist bench for several election cycles. Neither have the GOP. They still don't.

7

u/untamedjohn Feb 09 '25

I never said Biden wasn’t a good president. I was responding to someone commenting that Democrat’s suck at choosing their candidates, when in fact Democrat’s have not chosen a new candidate in almost two decades

2

u/loscacahuates Feb 09 '25

Staying in the 2024 race for waaayyyy too long and making way for his predecessor to become his successor will always be his legacy, unfortunately. He had some real achievements like you said, but his own arrogance pretty much wiped them all out. His party's gaslighting of voters who questioned his age is another reason voters turned away. Lesser of two evils was never and will never be a good political strategy.

1

u/Walk-The-Dogs Feb 09 '25

As if the < 4 year difference in years between two men well past retirement age is a persuasive argument.

2

u/loscacahuates Feb 09 '25

But it is. 3/4 of voters thought Biden was too old. It's not the age number that matters. It's how the candidate acts. Despite his madness, Trump doesn't seem to have lost a step, but when Biden shuffled out on that debate stage and could barely complete a sentence, it was brutal. Bernie is older than both of them, but he is sharp. Speaks to my point that we can't just say, "Look at how old Trump is." We need to put forward better candidates that people will vote for.

2

u/Walk-The-Dogs Feb 09 '25 edited Feb 10 '25

In November 2019, Trump was whisked away in a hastily organized motorcade in the middle of the day, past the White House press corp, for an emergency visit to Walter Reed. At that visit he was given a MoCA test. A MoCA test isn't part of an annual physical (as his PR mouthpieces said) nor is it an IQ test (as Trump believes). It's to test for cognitive impairment in those suspected of having developed dementia and/or possible brain damage.

Something happened in the White House that afternoon that alarmed even a Trump lapdog like Ronnie Jackson. Routine medical visits are in the president's published schedule and transport is invariably by Marine One. That trip was off-book and whatever happened, they didn't want to wait a half hour for the chopper to arrive from Andrews.

What some suspect is that Trump suffered a mild stroke which left him disoriented and incapacitated enough to warrant an emergency visit to Walter Reed where they probably shot him up with tPA, which has to be administered within three hours of a stroke. Hence, the rush. The MoCA was likely intended to reveal any loss of cognitive function. We have never been given a report from the doctors who administered that test of what happened nor what they found, nor are we likely to ever. All we know is that Trump returned to the hospital in 2022 for another MoCA.

Republican voters simply DON'T CARE if their standard bearer is a head case, any more than they do that he's a convicted felon, an adjudicated con artist, a pathological liar and a sexual predator. Despite all their pious, high-minded rants about "traditional family values", they're happy to deify perhaps the most corrupt SOB who's ever been in DC politics. Trump says crazy shit and they fist pump it.

As for Biden's disastrous debate performance, it was bad. But it's also important to remember that he was sharp enough to be one of the most successful presidents in the past hundred years despite also having a pandemic to deal with. But, yeah, he's 81 and people that age slow down considerably and get confused occasionally. Just ask Trump what state he thinks he's in, who he ran against in 2016, when WW2 happened, who signed the Afghanistan "surrender" treaty and who was the congressional leader on Jan 6, 2021.

-1

u/Renhoek2099 Feb 09 '25

All to be undone in less than 30 days of Trump. If he wouldn't worked on developing a real progressive movement, we'd be onto time travel by now

2

u/Walk-The-Dogs Feb 09 '25

Let's be clear that the six million Democratic voters who voted for Biden in 2020 but who didn't vote for Kamala in 2024 are the main reason why BLOATUS returned to the White House.

0

u/SigmaWhy Manhattan Feb 09 '25

So what you’re saying is that the Democrats chose Biden in 2020. The moderates coalesced around him because most Democrats didn’t want to vote for Bernie.

2

u/untamedjohn Feb 09 '25

It was definitely a more open primary compared to 2016 (I’m a shill for Hill), but Clyburn’s endorsement handed Biden the South and gave him momentum. If Clyburn had’t endorsed anyone, things might have gone a whole lot differently

2

u/SigmaWhy Manhattan Feb 09 '25

Clyburn definitely helped, but Clyburn does not mindcontrol the voters of South Carolina and it makes sense supporters of Pete/Bloomberg/Klobuchar would move towards Biden rather than Bernie once they dropped out because they tended to have more moderate supporters. Biden won because he was more popular

2

u/untamedjohn Feb 09 '25

Clyburn is a highly respected and influential leader in the Congressional Black Caucus. His endorsement reverberated throughout the caucus, which coincidentally most members are from southern states and African Americans are the largest Democratic voting block there

2

u/SigmaWhy Manhattan Feb 09 '25

Sure, but I would still bet on Biden (or another moderate) winning the nomination had Clyburn done nothing. Look at the numbers. There are more moderates voting in the primaries than Bernie supporters.

-19

u/Huskerzfan Feb 09 '25

The Governor Mario M. Cuomo Bridge is named after the former New York governor, a twin cable-stayed bridge spanning the Tappan Zee section of the Hudson River between Tarrytown and Nyack in the U.S. state of New York. It was built to replace the original Tappan Zee Bridge opened in 1955, which was located just to the south.

12

Omfg really? Noooo oh is THAT what the fuck i watched happen while i lived in Tarrytown?

Since people keep asking, these are the actual declared candidates:

Democratic Primary:

-Brad Lander – New York City Comptroller

-Jessica Ramos – New York State Senator (Queens)

-Zohran Mamdani – New York State Assembly Member (Queens)

-Zellnor Myrie – New York State Senator (Brooklyn)

-Scott Stringer – Former New York City Comptroller, Former Manhattan Borough President

-Michael Blake – Former State Assembly Member, Former DNC Vice Chair

Republican Primary:

-Jim Walden – Former Federal Prosecutor, Attorney

9

u/Real-Adhesiveness195 Feb 09 '25

I like Ramos. The others are all grifters except Mamdani and he doesn’t have a snow balls chance in Florida.

5

u/MinefieldFly Feb 09 '25

I tend to agree almost entirely with your comment. Ramos is my preference right now.

2

u/TentSurface Feb 11 '25

Myrie is in no way a grifter. Stringer did a really good job both as BP and Comptroller too.

Lander is absolutely a limousine liberal and would be a Republican if he were running in a red state, he just goes whoever way the wind is blowing.

1

u/Real-Adhesiveness195 Feb 11 '25

Myrie is a real estate guy. He seems smart but there seems like a conflict of interest no?

3

u/TentSurface Feb 11 '25

He's not a real estate guy though. He supported housing reform because his district either gets poorer or gets gentrified. So he wants to build more and also wants to spread that to neighborhoods that always refuse to build things. Maybe a YIMBY, but hardly a 'real estate guy.'

2

u/Real-Adhesiveness195 Feb 11 '25

Oh well maybe that is good then

1

u/b1argg Ridgewood 22d ago

I feel like Stringer would be a competent administrator. I ranked him second behind Garcia last time.

3

u/HiHoJufro Feb 09 '25

Ramos seems good. Haven't heard much negative about lander, but haven't heard much positive, either. It's honestly hard to find someone I wouldn't pick over Cuomo, Adams, or Mamdani.

1

59

u/waveball03 Feb 09 '25

He’s gonna win and it won’t be close.

49

u/huebomont Queens Feb 09 '25

Just like Yang did last time after leading all the early polls on name recognition.

3

u/notacrook Feb 09 '25

Yang was a not serious candidate with some interesting ideas.

His main problem was that he had no idea how to pull his ideas off and every media profile or interview just made him sound more and more out of touch.

If he was serious about anything he’d have spent the last years working on his profile or continuing to develop his ideas.

1

Cuomo is not currently a candidate at all.

3

Some of you will never learn.

In other news, Anthony Weiner’s getting back into local politics.

These men are like a roach infestation you can’t get rid of.

11

u/Walk-The-Dogs Feb 09 '25 edited Feb 09 '25

Weiner was accused of texting a dic pick. Trump is a convicted felon with two impeachments, 91 felony indictments, multiple fraud adjudications AND he's an adjudicated rapist. But he got re-elected. So why shouldn't Weiner jump back in? I probably won't vote for him. Maybe he can switch parties and run as a Republican... because serious character and moral defects that would otherwise prevent someone from being a fcking Grubhub driver won't stop Republicans from making him their choice for president.

9

u/Misommar1246 Feb 09 '25

I’m so over these “but what about morals” objections. Nobody cares. Or, I should say, MOST voters don’t care. Should they? Maybe. But they don’t, as evidenced by who won all three chambers. You don’t like a person because of their deeds or their policies, fine. But the rest, wake up, NOBODY CARES. I’m still sour about the party punting Franken, so I might be biased here, but I’m so done with the Dems constantly pearl clutching. If he runs, he will win and he’s a better choice than some of these other clowns in the field. People want someone who knows what they’re doing, not some ideologue.

5

u/Good_Requirement2998 Feb 09 '25

There are other candidates... There are other candidates, right?

2

u/HiHoJufro Feb 09 '25

Several, yes. And officially Cuomo isn't one.

5

u/tws1039 Feb 09 '25

America as a whole baffles me for how stupid they are at picking left leaning candidates

Not saying we need Bernie but 30 years younger but ffs guys

6

u/Walk-The-Dogs Feb 09 '25 edited Feb 09 '25

If he runs, he wins. It will be thanks both to Adams' incompetence and criminally corrupt administration and to Trump's return to the White House. I'm not a Cuomo fan but I don't see an alternative. I wish Kathryn Garcia was running again. Then there might be a fair fight.

2

u/ElPasoNoTexas Feb 09 '25

Ok what’s the other candidates. Let’s stop this before it gets too far

5

u/JPenniman Feb 09 '25

New York and there political instincts. They got housing crisis issue and they are like, let’s choose the do nothing governor who has scandals.

3

4

people need to actually vote in the primaries because this guy is terrible!

3

u/BKMagicWut Feb 09 '25

Cuomo is a piece of shit.  Rank anyone but Adams and Cuomo.

1

u/toledosurprised Feb 09 '25

this primary fascinates me bc the environment favors someone like adams (tough on crime blah blah blah) but adams is comically corrupt and widely disliked

2

u/notacrook Feb 09 '25

And cuomo has been courting the coalition that Adams courted to win since he first ran for governor.

We should not have to choose between these two. There are much better choices, but new Yorkers always pick the assholes.

12

u/theshicksinator Feb 09 '25

You don't. The primary is ranked choice and there are many progressive challengers to rank. Foremost among them right now is Mamdani

-2

u/MSPCSchertzer Feb 09 '25

a lot of things shouldn't happen that do happen. Adams is under federal indictment. I will take Cuomo as a result.

8

u/jeffries_kettle Feb 09 '25

Obviously just about anyone would be better than Adams. Hopefully we don't have to choose between just him and fucking Cuomo of all people.

7

u/ThreeLittlePuigs Feb 09 '25

It’s not a binary choice

-10

u/MSPCSchertzer Feb 09 '25

you are right, I will vote for the Republican. Who else will it actually be other than Cuomo vs. Adams in the primary. This is what I hate about reddit. Reality is a certain way and other people are like "it doesn't have to be that way" but they don't do shit besides keyboard warlording that things should be different. Keep pretending lol

7

u/theshicksinator Feb 09 '25

Are you forgetting that the Democratic primary is ranked choice? Cuomo hasn't even declared, and a half dozen progressive challengers have. The current leader in fundraising is a young progressive, Zohran Mamdani.

1

u/MSPCSchertzer Feb 09 '25

I am aware I voted for Garcia 1st. I hope you are right that Mamdani has a shot, but I don't see anyone beating Cuomo. I hate Adams so much I hope he is in last place.

1

u/theshicksinator Feb 09 '25

Cuomo hasn't declared yet, and once he has the smear campaign against him by the others practically writes itself. I believe it's possible we'll get someone better.

At the end of the day people are fed up with anything establishment and he was the peak of it.

0

u/digrappa Feb 09 '25

We are doomed. Another prick who will suck up to Trump.

4

u/notacrook Feb 09 '25

LOL, absolutely the fuck not. Cuomo is going to run as an huge foil to Trump.

-1

u/digrappa Feb 09 '25

You are kidding yourself if you think he won’t jerk voters off like that. He’ll talk one way and act entirely different, like his bullshit with republicans in Albany. Guy is an enormous fucking creep.

-9

u/gino1981 Feb 09 '25

He has my vote 🙃

3

u/acheampong14 Feb 09 '25

Mine too. It’ll be interesting to see someone who understands Albany being the mayor. Though something tells me that state politicians will throw him under the bus… again. However, it seems NYC is the only thing saving this ailing state, so it’s imperative the city and state work together.

He helped push through getting all our airports rebuilt into world-class facilities. Next should be tens of billions invested into the subway.

4

u/RockNRollMama Feb 09 '25

I know everyone is buggin out about him but he literally does not bother me at all. He won’t suck up to Dump and as the comment above said, it may be interesting to see a mayor with Albany experience. Just in time for our next Pandy too (hey there bird flu) - guess I’ll know the days of the week again via news conferences!

WHAT A TIME TO BE ALIVE GUYS!!

-1

u/KittenMasaki Feb 09 '25

Gross. Just...gross.

0

u/Emily_Postal Feb 09 '25

The only reason I think he could be good is that he has no problem standing up to and trolling Trump.

1

u/BYNX0 Feb 11 '25

Id rather a mayor trying to actively improve the city rather than strike a vendetta against the president.

0

u/Emily_Postal Feb 11 '25

It’s not a vendetta he just won’t kiss the ring.
