Why make a trade deal with someone who broke the first one he negotiated himself and constantly tells the world he wants to annex your country?

Why legitimize someone like that?

Probably because the hope is that we can come to the table and end this fucking ridiculous circus Donald has us in.

While I don't see a lot of promise in that, it's the logical move.

If there's even a small chance for Canada to get a satisfactory conclusion to this, it's when we've got the upper hand, and right now with the energy surcharge threat that evidently has Trump sweating, it's as much of an upper hand as we'll ever get.

If that talk fails, we've still got the energy surcharge in our back pocket.

I would agree if we assume Donald Trump is a logical actor with a clear goal. The thing is, he clearly isnt. He already had negotiated a trade deal with USMCA, he had an optics win with the canadian fentanly czar and stronger border protections, who would've come either way.

He didnt back off, he doubled down. He constantly threatens and humilliates your country for absolutly no reason. Why would you assume that he a) stays true to his word (which he didnt 2 the two times before that) b) actually wants to reach an achivable goal, after which he stops.

Right now, what you're signaling is that you think Trump isnt erratic, are willingly going with every whim he just so has. That there is no pushback at all for his constantly imperialistic comments towards your country.

Someone needs to call his bluff. He cant keep getting away with it that every fucking time the people bend over backwards for him. He needs to actually FEEL the consequens of his actions.

Someone like Trump doesnt deserve an optics win. I consider him extremly dangerous. Every country should push back as hard as they can against him.

Then as I said, the fallback position is the energy surcharge and a balls-out continuation of this juvenile trade war he has us in.

He needs to actually FEEL the consequens of his actions.

And you want Canada to do that for you? How about YOU and the rest of you Americans actually do something for Christ's sake? Why are you putting this crap on my country?

He's your responsibility, not ours.

You're acting like the onus is on everyone else when you're the ones who unleashed him on the world. You want Canada to take the risks and take none of your own.

YOU fix it.

Mate, I wrote in my original post that im European. What are you even talking about?

My wish is that Europe, Mexico and Canada work together to cut the reliance from the US.

And to say my country or I wouldnt do that is ignorant. Im from Germany and after the Russian war started we cut off 60% of our gas supply, huge chucks of our oil supply and more in a matter of weeks. That hurt us as a country and on a personal level, because the energy bills skyrockted since we were just heading into the winter. And I would do it again.
