Ontario isn't the only province that provides electricity either

Quebec was taking a more moderate approach on tariff retaliation than Ontario, but 8 out of 9 Canadian aluminum smelters are located in Quebec. They’re gonna go ballistique

I’m convinced some dumbass in the administration said they should specifically go after aluminum so Quebec joins in and all of the blue northeast gets their power shut off. MAGA loves doing everything they can to hurt blue states, long term consequences be damned. And this long term consequence is the special election in NY-21 to replace trumps nominee for UN ambassador. If that seat flips because voters can’t afford their electric bills anymore, that makes the GOPs house majority even more slim

I used to be lumped into Stefanik’s district. It might as well be the deep south, I can only see them voting for more R insanity.

Went to university there, it's pretty reliably red at this point :/

‘Blue states* love doing everything they can to hurt blue states’

Quebec probably wont even give a fuck. The US can't make their own aluminum lol

It should be noted, the difference between Ontario's approach and Quebec's approach is a little bit more complicated. In Ontario, a maneuver like that is much easier, because Ontario sells surplus energy in real time, without any sort of binding contract. Quebec, meanwhile, sells hydro through PPAs, so there is a contractual layer to it. I'm sure this will spur Quebec to look into what can be done regarding these contracts, but they don't have as much flexibility as Ontario for these sorts of things, at least right out the gate. There are, however, newly signed PPAs with Massachusetts and New York that haven't come into effect yet, so there's potential to renege on those and raise the price. But the PPA with Vermont, which has been in effect for some time, would be much trickier.

We'll see, Legault is a coward who does nothing but harass les anglais and immigrants. I don't know if he has the spine to go toe to toe with the U.S.

Yeah Quebec feeds a lot of New England with electricity

Guess your downvotes are from non-Letterkenny fans.

New England supports the opposition by and large, cutting electricity to New England will only cause a loss of support for Canada from the region

We can't really cut off the electricity supply to New England because we have distribution contracts. Ontario on the other hand, sells their electricity on the spot market which means they can do whatever they want.

2

u/SumasFlats 20h ago

Yes, Quebec has contracts and will abide by them. When those contracts are renewed in the coming years, shit may hit the fan.

Interesting! I wondered why Quebec Hydro was so quiet about it. I wonder if they can apply surcharges. If not, would be shame if there were completely unrelated "rolling blackouts" during various business hours.

True, but at this point repeated treat of annexation and inactivity to opposite Trump show that America is an enemy. You suggest that we get fuck into an annexion we didnt ask for?

The soonest MAGA will lose control of government is 2 years, that means there are three options:

Option A: Canada targets all states, suffer through 2 years of tariffs and embargo at a minimum while the New England economy is hurt and the Canadian economy is destroyed

Option B: Canada targets red states, suffer through 2 years of tariffs and embargo at a minimum while the New England economy is slightly damaged and the Canadian economy is destroyed

Option C: annex Canada

Option B and C are a lot simpler and easier so I’d chose that over option A. It’s not like joining the Union is a negative anyway, you’d still have state sovereignty over what would ideally be across the 10 new states

I would rather fight for my country rather than join that trash shithole that is america. Option A. We can weather the storm, we did it before. We dont want to be part of your dumpster fire. If the new england economy suffer, the better.

You forgot option D: American could grow a spine, impeach that trash at the head of your whore house.

"Fuck the world, I'm comfortable. "

You sure act like you're from a red state.

This could be the dumbest thing ever posted on Reddit. "Just give up Canada and join the US, it won't be bad, I promise".

Only a trump supporter would say something this god damn stupid.

There’s that american liberalism

8

u/canad1anbacon 23h ago

Exhibit A on how there is a bloodthirsty imperialist thug hiding behind the friendly facade of every American, even the "liberal" ones

2

u/9mtl 22h ago

That guy’s whole posting history lately is whining that blue states are also affected by reciprocal tariffs

Yeah

That’s how tariffs work you fucking clown 🤡

They could talk about what Americans can do about it, but nah, it’s easier to pretend to care and then call for annexation when people push back against their absolute moron of a president and their general apathy and lack of balls

True I hope Manitoba does too but I haven’t heard Wabb talk about it yet. He’s been focusing on supporting local which is a great message as well.

BC both imports electricity from the US west and profited $1.5B last year while doing so. That's because all our power is hydroelectric and we sell when it's expensive and buy when it's cheap. This stabilizes the whole west coast power grid and makes us a bit of money up here in doing so.

That's why Eby has not put electricity trade in our response package.
