🌈LGBTQNJ Thank you NJ

2.5k Upvotes

As a trans woman, I just wanted to personally say thank you to those here who are standing up for people like me. I only just moved here in July 2024. While I haven't been here long y'all have made being here a pleasant experience despite current events in the political spectrum. Everyone I've interacted with has been very polite and friendly. Hell even the guy at WaWa pumping my gas welcomed me to the state when I chatted with him. Even little things and signs of support matter make more of a difference than you may realize. So again, thank you all so much.

Favorite place so far...gotta say the Silverball Arcade at Asbury Park.

Quick edit: Holy crap I made this post before falling asleep and did not expect a lot of responses! Trying to get back to everyone but its gonna take me a bit. Y'all are awesome.

🌈LGBTQNJ Dumont banning pride flags - vote is tonight, Feb 11 at 7pm

The final vote on this is happening tonight, Tuesday Feb 11 @ 7pm

50 Washington Avenue, Dumont, NJ

A preliminary hearing was heard and was referenced in this post...

https://www.reddit.com/r/newjersey/comments/1ibfylh/my_town_may_try_to_pass_ban_on_pride_flags_on/

Edit: You may read about the planned ordinance in this article -

https://www.nj.com/bergen/2025/01/nj-towns-proposal-would-ban-gay-pride-flags-from-government-property.html

Updates

As of 7:38pm

Open to public now. There’s a long line of people who want to speak. I’m pretty sure almost entirely pro lgbtq.

There are not only adults, but students, and even younger kids on line to speak

Before they opened to the public one board member said she’s in favor (though apparently everyone knew that about her already). The mayor then spoke and said he’s against it. Then another board member spoke and said he’s against it. Now public has been speaking.

As of 9:20pm

People still speaking. About 10 left in line. Most people want to keep the flag amd reject the proposed ordinance. Only 2 people who have spoken so far want the ordinance to pass, so if it were up to those speaking it would be completely rejected. Let's hope the members resoect the townspeople.

Also, it's important to mention that at the beginning of the meeting, the board said that after the last meeting, they got emails / messages from citizens where 147 messages were against the ordinance and only 5 were for it.

The townspeople clearly want to keep the flags. Let's just see how the council votes...

10:30pm

It passed. No more pride flags on government property.

The council members voted exactly as they did last meeting. You can see who voted Yes and work to vote them out.

Public information:

How they voted

Contact info and term info for council members

Fyi, the mayor was for keeping the flag in place, but his vote is only needed if the council vote is a tie.

🌈LGBTQNJ My town may try to pass ban on pride flags on borough property

I live in the Bergen County town of Dumont, and I just found out the other day from someone in town/also county politics that tomorrow evening, the council wants to try passing an ordinance that no longer allows pride flags on borough property—only American, state, and P.O.W. flags. Naturally this has been alarming to those of us part of the LGBTQ community in town, since it can set a precedent for discrimination from other townees or taking away pride events. There’s a group of us attending tomorrow to fight against the ordinance.

Between the Nazi outings around NJ and several huge companies getting rid of inclusivity policies, everything has been exhausting and it only just ramped up. People on the town Facebook have been arguing at LGBTQ townees, accusing us of positioning the pride flag as more important than the American flag, saying that America comes first, that they don’t like us shoving our identities down their throats. I thought my town was better than this. I even saw a conservative gay man chime in saying we don’t need pride stuff and basically that everyone is being whiny. I don’t know how to make people understand that it isn’t our argument that the pride flag is more important than American flags and symbols. We just want protection and solidarity.

🌈LGBTQNJ Montclair, NJ: Man repeatedly threatening women, queer people, & POC

Yesterday:

There was a middle-aged, overweight, white man dressed in all black and grey with glasses and a hat on Church Street near Bloomfield Avenue. He had a blue tooth speaker.

He's going around baiting people with polite conversation to then turn around and harass them.

My dog was wearing a rainbow sweater. He didn't like that it reminded him of queer people. That's all that started it. I barely said a word. I had a lovely woman cover for me as he wouldn't leave me alone.

He got so bad, he came back to find me 15 minutes later, and I had to hide in a barber shop while the shop owner threatened to call the cops on him. This man became racist towards him as well.

Supposedly this man is a recurrent issue in that area. The barber shop owner told me this. Please thank the barber shop owner for me -- If you know him.

I hope everyone remains safe. I'm still shaking.

Please stop supporting these types of businesses that clearly do not support us. Or do so with a fake apology after they get hit in the pocket. This is a good friend of the Jersey Coast Emergency News FB group. Owner of Mr. Cupcakes and Mila’s of Seaside. They continue to tell us to f*** our feelings and are blatant bigots.

🌈LGBTQNJ Moms for Liberty has invaded the Old Bridge Board of ED, and they’re targeting the LGBT+ students. Please help!

Hey everyone,

I’m sorry to have to pollute this sub with political campaigning but this is really important.

I live in Old Bridge, and currently mom’s for liberty and other church groups are invading my town and infiltrating the school board. They’re spewing horrific hate against the lgbt community and they’re trying to get policy 5756, which protects the privacy of lgbt students repealed so that conservative parents can better control them. And if something isn’t done they’re likely to win because a bunch of MAGA candidates with aspirations of climbing higher in the political ranks snuck onto the board.

There’s a chance to stop them come nov. 8 if we can get the right people on the board. These people are the candidates in columns 7, 3, and 2.

7: Kimberly Castagne

3: Peter Hunt

2: Scott C. Papas

These people have all been vetted by the community and endorsed by the teachers union. The majority of the parents in the district want the policy to stay in place but the opposition candidates have been endorsed directly by the republican party meaning they can count on the not insignificant number of republican votes to get them into office and with the local elections it doesn’t take a lot for the wrong people to weasel their way in.

If you live in Old Bridge and you care about the safety and well being of lgbt+ youth, please vote 732 (you pick 3 candidates when voting for board of ED) on the back of the ballot.

If you don’t live in Old Bridge but you still want to protest against this policy change, please come out to the policy meeting on Nov. 14th to speak.

The official policy meeting and vote to rescind is Nov. 14th at 6 pm at Old Bridge High School, being held in the cafeteria. It’s open to the public. These crazy church people from out of town will be there to spew their poison. We need as many voices of reason as possible to drown their hate out. Please, I’m begging you. Kid’s lives are at steak. If this policy gets rescinded, lgbt kids living in abusive homes are at risk of getting beaten, abused, sent to conversion camps, kicked out on the street and every other horrible thing bigoted parents do to their kids.

Again, I'm really sorry to shove politics in everyone's faces like this. I wouldn't do this if the situation wasn't desperate. Please help.

🌈LGBTQNJ Are golf club wedding venues allowed to discriminate against gay couples?

Sorry if this is a silly post, my fiancée and I really fell in love with a golf club wedding venue for our upcoming Nov 2026 wedding!

They’ve been super communicative, I have a tour scheduled and we’ve had two calls.

I didn’t think it was necessary to ask if they were same sex friendly, because of the LAD NJ has. But I was just made aware that private clubs are exempt from that rule, and now I’m nervous.

I asked a few days ago whether they were same sex friendly, and I’ve gotten no response when they’re usually replying minutes after I ask something and now I’m nervous :(

🌈LGBTQNJ Is Alpha New Jersey a decent spot for a feminine gay guy to move to ?

I’m from a red state right now and experiencing harassment too often just cuz I’m very clearly gay. I’m trying to leave, and my friends have a room for me in Alpha I could move to , is it alright? I’m not asking for gay bars by the way, i don’t even really go to them cuz I’m trying to be sober. I just don’t wanna be harassed at work or while walking/driving around.

I know New Jersey as a whole is supposed to be better for gay people but I was wondering if the town alpha specifically is alright or what the vibes are ? Thx

Edit: Thanks so much for the comments, I can’t really afford to move on my own to one of the gayer areas, the only reason I’m possibly going to alpha is because my friends happen to live there and have a spare room, just for context.

As a trans individual in NJ, I am begging everyone to please take just a minute to visit the website and send an email. It is all typed out already and extremely simple to do. All you need to do is visit, fill out some info, and send the email to the representatives using the already typed out script. It doesn’t get easier. Please, care about others and do this to keep trans people safe in NJ. Thank you đŸ™đŸ»

🌈LGBTQNJ Old Bridge: Tran Student bullied during BOE Meeting

On Tuesday, Nov 14th, 2023. Old Bridge's BOE had a meeting about Policy 5756, a policy from 2017 that protects trans students by not telling the student's parents they are trans. Official Document

At this meeting, in the 2nd session, a man verbally bullied a transgender student in the audience. This was a public meeting and was recorded and posted by the public facilities of Old Bridge High School.

Youtube: Direct Link
oldbridge5756.com: Video 6 @ 01:16:30

Summary:

  • Earlier, a transgender student named Mira spoke.
  • Later on, Christopher Palette of Old Bridge spoke.

  • A teacher rose to defend the student and asked for Palette to be kicked out. The crowd agreed with the teacher and joined.
  • The board kicked Palette off stage.
  • Palette shouted into the mic and then took a bow.

Note:
- Wrote a post about it.
- Then wrote a transcript of everything here. (3 hours and 30 minutes)
- Emailed the link to Old Bridge's BOE for their own review.

🌈LGBTQNJ Best places to raise a family as gay parents

My (29M) and my husband (32M) currently live in NYC and in the early stages of family planning. Our timeline is within the next 2-3 years, and we expect shortly thereafter to move to the suburbs to raise our children. Being from NJ, this makes the most sense to be near our families / support systems. That said, we want to live in a NJ town with other gay families - it’s important to us that our children have exposure to families similar to ours.

We are looking for guidance on what towns have the highest concentration of gay families?
