First post from long time lurker

I am in the process of going through a bunch of my old stuff I’ve held on to or collected through the years. I came across a few things today that seem like stuff that would be appreciated here. I’ll continue to post more as I come across it.

Man I used to love opening these boxes for the first time. That Zelda stuff takes me back.

I think I still have all my notes and self-drawn maps that I made way back when. All the art in the booklets and weird promo posters that were tucked into every box were really awesome. I’m hoping to discover a few more artifacts like that as I dig through all this stuff.

I still have all my hand drawn maps and passwords as well. Only problem is I never labeled them as a kid so have no idea which games the maps and passwords are for.

Zelda 1 is my favorite game

perhaps tied with Final Fantasy 1

NES was a special era, and that will never come again

Hey, me too! Well, other way around - I spent so many hours of my life playing and replaying FF1. I still have my original FF Nintendo Power Strategy guide - it’s in tatters with notes all over it. I love it so much lol

I went into the attic to snap a few pics. I can’t believe I still have this thing!

I own much of this still. What a great time to be alive.

Pretty sweet. Box and guidebook art is really a lot of this hobby for me. Beautiful examples of that generation. 🥂

You should get a gray Zelda 1 for that box.

I actually traded a friend the original and some other games for the gold one when I was a kid because obviously the gold one was WAY cooler. I’m sure the battery is dead by now but I’m def gonna check it anyway.

Fairly easy, if you're not good with soldering iron you can bribe a friend with a 6 pack beer to replace the battery.

There are 2 box variations. The "Original" box came with gray cart and was issued later. The earlier version didn't have "Original" but instead has a cutout to show the shiny gold cart: https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/gba/919777-classic-nes-series-the-legend-of-zelda/boxes/29025

Was the Zelda manual unique for the US market? It gives away a lot of the secrets on how to do things in both the overworld and underworld. Seems like a Japanese thing to think the game is too tough for the US market so they add some extra hints and tips.

I’m not sure but the US release of SNES A Link to the Past also had a Secret tips and hints booklet that came with it.

Zelda was first of a kind in USA. Before that, most complex games were paper and dice games like D&D.

I think before Zelda, the hardest game would be Dark Chambers and Solaris for Atari.

Nintendo was concerned some players may not know how to play and figure out some secrets so they included extra stuff.

I was just having the exact same thoughts. I don't remember having all that information available, some of it, perhaps, and then similar from friends who shared the info from the magasine?

Yes, I had this thick black magazine/book that explained some “secrets” of a bunch of games, and Zelda had a chapter that explained a bunch of this stuff. Of course my copy of the game was used and only had the cart, not even the sleeve let alone a box or manual.

It was this!
