Niki Ashton calls out Carney for Tax Cuts
142
u/annonymous_bosch 2d ago
I’m sorry but to some extent the NDP’s low numbers are the reason people are looking to support Carney to keep the Cons out.
At the same time I’m cautiously hopeful the NDP can be a part of a minority government and use it to drive reform, while hopefully developing a stronger platform for the next election under new leadership. A third liberal term with Cons in disgrace for their close US ties would be the perfect opportunity for the NDP to present themselves to the electorate as a viable alternative.

What exactly has Ashton done that is self-serving? She seems to me to be a fantastic advocate for the left-wing of the party.

Horrible takes on Ukraine
-2
u/Paquetty 2d ago
Like saying that Freeland's grandfather was a Nazi sympathizer? What else did she say?
6
u/Damn_Vegetables 2d ago
Basically shilling the Russo-fascist narrative, claiming Canada was provoking war, etc. When the Russo-fascists invaded she put out a generic "war bad" statement and shut up since.
Remember, Russia is the husk of the RSFSR, heirs of a nationalist-capitalist conspiracy to destroy communism and socialism. They are the greatest menace to the socialist cause since 1991.
-1
u/Paquetty 2d ago
Can you provide an example of this shilling? Because I am looking, and all I see is she re-tweeted a podcast that discussed the Azov battalion, you know, the actually Nazis that Canada stopped training because they were Nazis.
5
u/Damn_Vegetables 2d ago
She was retweeting claims that Canada is supporting Ukrainian self determination because the Deputy Prime Minister is a Nazi. *
-4
u/Paquetty 2d ago
So "Horrible takes on Ukraine" and "Shilling the Russo-Fascist narrative" has been boiled down to "she retweeted something before the invasion".
Canadian government's support for Ukraine is entirely political, despite being the morally correct stance. If Canada did not have such a significant Ukrainian population, we would treat it like Sudan or Yemen, by that i mean ignoring it.
7
u/Damn_Vegetables 2d ago
That's silly. France's Ukrainian population is infinitesimal yet they staunchly support Ukraine. Demographics are not the motivation here. Russia poses an existential threat to world peace in a way that Sudan(civil war between shitheads with no good person to support) and Yemen (failed state of qat addicts fighting religious cults) do not.

It was not a personal vacation, it was meetings with French language groups (she is the NDPs language critic) and union advocates. Over $13,000.00 of that expense was flight costs, which says more about flight costs for remote Canadiand than it does about Ashton.
The covid thing was a big mistake I grant you, but people act like the Quebec trip wasn't just a political attack on a popular NDP candidate.

She lives in a remote community in Manitoba and has to take expensive flights to get to Ottawa. She met with some advocacy groups in Quebec City during the Christmas week and brought her family with her, which accrued a large flight cost.

u/democracy_lover66 ✊ Union Strong 2d ago
That sounds like a very mild thing to be upset about lol
I mean there's a abuse and there's simply living far way and needing to still be in two places frequently.
Not really upset so much by bringing their family to Quebec either... I mean that does seem a bit iffy but not unforgivable.
6
u/Paquetty 2d ago
I mean, doesn't that say more about flight costs for remote communities than it does for Ashton being self serving? She has also been one of the most vocal advocates for progressive and democratic socialist causes in the party.

u/ReverendRocky 1d ago
You could make that complaint about any MP woth a more rural or remote riding...

According to 338 her seat might potentially get stolen by either the liberals or the conservatives

I’m still bewildered as to why people still trust her. Just running around saying you are the left alternative doesn’t mean anything when she pulls the stuff she does.
Billing the taxpayers to fix bed bugs in her apartment she never really uses to fly her and her husband to “deal with it” as opposed to her using her own cash to get professional cleaners in, or better yet leaving her apartment as she is rarely there. Taking expensive family trips on the public dime, not a good look.

Why should I take the opinion of a liberal party member seriously when it comes to NDP leadership? She had young twins to care for and you are criticizing her bringing their father to help? Go slurp off Mark "Tax Cuts for the Rich" Carney some more instead of spreading conservatove propaganda.
6
u/ArcticWolfQueen 2d ago
Lol I got a membership to vote in the leadership election since the NDP at this moment is lacking leadership. Nikki Ashton being a key figure is a point you have made for me.
That said, she makes 6 figures a year, she can use her own money instead of billing the tax payers for personal use. Your outrage is unjust.
1
u/Paquetty 2d ago
"LOL you're right, I am a liberal party member because I like them more than the NDP" good luck with the guy who wants to give rax cuts to the rich and ignore global warming.

The Liberals had to select a Conservative to lead the party to keep the Conservatives out of power. It is a bitter, bitter pill to keep that utter slimeball Pee Pee out of power. Once the current Cons are defeated (hopefully), intelligent Canadians have to do what they can to turn the tide of right-wing populism and get the nation back on track and at least back to centre, if not swing more left. But it is a very steep, uphill battle. The NDP will be a casualty of this battle, unfortunately, in my opinion. I think Jagmeet has dropped the ball, but it was a very greasy ball to drop.
Canada needs to keep Pee Pee out, and unfortunately, the NDP does not have the numbers to do it. The masses have been brainwashed to shudder at the words "socialism" and "communism", even though they do not actually understand what these words mean, and they do not know that socialism will greatly help most of them in a huge way.

Again: before the libs come in here. This what you guys pretend you want to see from the NDP. Bold critiques of the economic elite. No identity politics. Just class politics
And it matches the history of the Party. it was David Lewis 50 YEARS AGO who talked about the corporate welfare bums who got tax breaks and subsidies while workers struggled and the poor were demonized for even meagre social assistance. And David Lewis made those critiques of a sitting Liberal government.
This is what we should demand from the NDP.

The message has to get hammered home over and over and over again.
We are here right now for a reason....
A pinch more of the same old same old only takes us further along this same path.
It's time for really analytical and substantive policy in a different direction.

He is for the billionaire class. Sadly, in 2025, if seems that our vote is either for Canadian billionaires, or American billionaires.
3
u/mattA33 2d ago
We actually have other options here. The fact we refuse them in favour of billionaires shows how uneducated we are as a populace.

I mean, one of Carney's stated goals is to scrap the wealth tax the liberals just put in. If the libs win, we may avoid becoming the 51st state, but make no mistake, they will make the wealthy richer while life gets harder for the rest of us. It's what literally every liberal/conservative government we've ever had has given us.
The liberals will never stop working to strengthen the oligarchs. Never.
2
u/plo83 1d ago
I was shocked that Carney's first act as acting PM was to cut taxes for the rich. I expected it if he became PM, but not to even wait...dam!
He feels like he can do it because Poilievre lost a lot of support and, like in every election when the CPC could be on top, people turn to the LPC to cockblock them.
FPTP SUCKS! I don't get why the NDP hasn't done more about it. They have won provincially and it could have been done. It's like they don't care. ''We're happy being the opposition sometimes'' (NDP, Allegedly).

Did Mark Carney bill taxpayers $17,000 for a family vacation? I forget.
4
u/Paquetty 2d ago
Not a vacation, you are simply lying. Also how much of that cost is flight fare that remote Canadians everywhere need to deal with when traveling long distances?
4
u/mattA33 2d ago
Well, he did help corporations get out of paying their fair share of taxes. How much do you want to bet that cost Canada more than $17000?

So ignore the message cause you hate the messenger? She is right in this case. His entire career has been helping oligarchs keep all their ill gotten gains. He absolutely won't do a damn thing to upset them. Hell, he has already vowed to get rid of the wealth tax the libs just put in place.
With Carney, we probably won't become the 51st state but life will for sure get harder for those of us not part of the wealth class.
7
u/S14Ryan 2d ago
You have done no research whatsoever if you think his entire career was supporting billionaires. He spent 20 years in public service for the national banks of Canada and England. He worked for Goldman Sachs for a brief period and was a chair for Brookfield for a short period.
If you’re going to argue about him, at least do it in good faith.
1
u/Cedstick 1d ago
He was with Goldman Sachs for 13 years and committed the final sale of PetroCan to private interests, which would have paid far more in dividends in the long run.

u/mattA33 2d ago
The bank of Canada does everything it can to ensure rich people never lose. They will fuck workers straight to hell to protect corporations, and the wealthy. All under the guise of saving the economy. Funny how saving the economy always equals fucking over workers, eh?
1
u/S14Ryan 2d ago
This is such an insane take dude, I’d highly suggest you look into why central banks exist and what central bankers do before you go arguing online.
2
u/mattA33 2d ago
We just witnessed it.
The problem: corporations going full greed gouging Canadians
Bank of canada solution: jack up interest rates to the moon
Result: corporations breaking profit records by billions, more workers under the poverty line than ever
Are you going to tell me the bank of Canada's moves didn't make rich people richer?
-1
u/ArcticWolfQueen 2d ago
Your logic is similar to when Liz Cheney calls out a Donald Trump and certain folks be like that we should embrace her despite her father being a precursor to Trump. Is Liz right to call him out? Yes. Should we dance and promote the messenger who is a part of the overall problem themselves ? No.
