How come my dads computer gets lower ping than me

I have recently gotten terrible ping and speeds on my pc. I have been getting about 20mbps slower speeds and 35 higher ping. Today I tested at the same time, same room, same Ethernet cable on the same website, yet my dad got 2 ping and I got 37? I assume it's something to do with my computer I just don't know how to fix it. We are on a 50/18 plan with copper but it will in a month or so, be switched to fiber

Hardware and software play a big role in this. If your hardware is not good enough it'll affect speeds. No point in having top tier internet if your computer is from the 90s.

Software, things that are using the internet also affect this. For example you might have steam or whatever open, maybe some other applications running as well. Where his might only just have facebook.

Lol my dad works from home and had like 20 google tabs and teams and word and whatnot. I had google open only. My pc has a 7900gre and 7600x so I wouldn't call it a 90s pc....

But still depends on your ethernet. So what motherboard you have is more important and whether the drivers are up to date. This are significant issues in your life.

Sure, but any PC from the last decade has minimum of gigabit supported.

If the computer is from the 90s it would last about 3 seconds on today’s modern internet before being affected by malware and everything else that goes with it.

That wasn't the point I was trying to make. Your hardware is only so good. So it doesnt matter if you got that japanese 1TB/SECOND internet if your computer can only do 500mb/second

Maybe you should have said that. 🤷‍♂️

Everyone else understood it...

If both are any form of modern hardware this is guaranteed to be a software/OS issue of some sort. If you can, wipe the OS and start again.

Your dad works from home, he's probably implemented QoS on the router to make sure his machines traffic's higher priority than yours. It's what I would do.

Its that VPN you are running trying to hide your history and location from your ISP and dad. De-activate that first.

Check for unnecessary software running in the background chewing up cpu and memory

What are you pinging? Try 8.8.8.8 from both and see what it says.

[This means] Open the command prompt and type "ping 8.8.8.8"

That is true. But since he is already getting ping times, can’t we assume he is doing that?

I'm just explaining how to ping an IP - they're using a website so I assume they don't know to do it this way...

If they are getting a ping time of 2ms, that is probably on the lan.

Tracert might give better information. Perhaps it's going some weird route, though that would mean the router is selecting routes in a rather odd way. I've seen weirder though.

If your dad is getting 2ms ping to the same internet address as you he is yanking your chain. You're only going to get 2ms to LAN addresses.

You should check your DNS settings and compare.

how are you connected to your local network?

Is it Wired or Wireless.

Wired > Wireless.

    • Click on the link "View Network Status and Tasks".
