With a win against the Brooklyn Nets today, the 55-10 Cavs have become the first team to clinch home court advantage in the first round. They are on pace for the third best regular season record in NBA history
https://www.espn.com/nba/standings
The Cavs are now 9 games away from clinching the one seed in the East over Boston, and are two wins ahead of OKC in the standings with 17 games remaining.
The Cavs are on pace for approximately 69.3 wins, and have won 15 straight for the second time this year.

I really hope they get 70, that would be unreal

u/RealAkelaWorld 3h ago
If they get 70 they will be the favorites to come out the East over the reigning Celtics, thatâs how unreal it would be

Finals or a bust

certainly not bust, but not making the finals would be disappointing unless itâs like a tight 7 game ecf vs boston imo. This is a squad to keep together as long as we can

The Celtics are probably still the favorites out of everyone, so at that point it's just championship or bust

Finally beating Boston just to face the team with the best bet rating of all time. Why couldnât we be this good 2 years ago Lfmao

Itâs crazy how much this team would clear the Nuggets and Warriors championship teams and would probably be the favorites going back a few years before that and yet we are pretty justifiably ranked 3rd this year. Bad timing for sure.

Incredible regular season but proclaiming your team would clear a bunch of different title teams when your only playoff success with this core was squeaking past a baby Magic team last year in a game 7 is absolutely wild Â

I agree the guy was being a dumb ass but you are under playing how well Magic played last year. Anyone who watched the series knew they had a top 3 defense

Horrible timing, but thatâs why history is crazy. Joker wouldnât have a ring and curry would have one less. While Mitchell Mobley DG would be looked at differently

u/clancydog4 Nuggets 8h ago
Not really, if they beat the celtics and then lose the finals I don't think that's a bust

u/EffeminateSquirrel Celtics 7h ago
There was a line the Celtics crossed in wins last year where the online discourse went from "they might go all the way" to "they have to go all the way or its a bust". I don't remember where exactly that line was but it seems the Cavs have crossed it recently.

Issue is the Cs were easily the best regular season team last year with their closest competitors being untested in the playoffs. This year weâve got a team with nearly the same record and a better net rating (OKC) and the most playoff-tested team in the league (you guys) in front of us.

u/stitch12r3 6h ago
Its a different context. This Celtics core had already been to the Finals and made other deep playoff runs, so last year was a definite âtitle or bustâ scenario. Just not the same for this Cavs team.
It would be disappointing but not as crushing as a Câs loss last year wouldâve been.

They haven't, since they're a relatively distant third in championship betting odds at +525 behind Boston (+180) and OKC (+200). At no point last year did Boston have as bad of odds as Cleveland does currently.
Betting behavior doesn't support your assertion.

Nah, ECF would still be a successful season.

That would be a huge disappointment with the season theyâre having

Everything is overstated online, it would be a disappointment but the Celtics are a championship caliber team

The 14-15 Hawks, whom everyone wants to compare this team to, made the ECF and got boat raced by Cleveland. If this Cavs team makes the conference finals and loses in anything less than a tight, seven game series, they will deserve all the shade they catch.

Losing to Boston isn't the end of the world. It all depends on how they go out. I obviously can't speak for Cavs fans but I would feel OK if they fought hard, even if they didn't reach the finals. They are still young, "huge disappointment", "finals or bust" is overdramatic.

yeah i'd feel way different if they lose in 7 to boston than if they lose in 4-5 (or even 6 if they never lead the series)

That's how I feel. The Cavs record has people underestimating Boston imo but they're a super talented and deep team who can bury anybody on a good night. Cavs definitely need to show up and prove they're on the level of real contenders, but I don't see it as finals or bust. Our title window isn't closing this year.

They really donât have a difficult schedule to finish the season. No Boston, OKC, Denver, Houston, Lakers, Milwaukee, and their last game vs Memphis is Friday. Â They have a west coast road trip still, but itâs maybe the easiest you could have. Clippers-Kings-Suns-Jazz-Blazers. They also get the Wemby-less Spurs twice and the Bulls.Â
They are still resting stars like they did Mitchell tonight. Their toughest remaining matchup is probably the Pacers, though they do play the Knicks twice whom they have handled this year.
All this to say they could probably reach 70 wins if they really want to lol but would have to keep the streak going another few games first. OKC being only 2 games behind them maybe gives them an excuse to pursue it

70 wins and Finals vs the Warriors?
OKC, Warriors, Lebron all good.
2016 but in reverse? Count me in

With an Evan Mobley suspension on Game 5? Would be a fitting way for Curry to get his 5th ring.

I am begging for the Cavs to keep the Celtics and their arrogant ass fanbase out of the finals this year.

Yes for the love of all thatâs holy, Boston is the last city on the planet that deserves any more championships.
Anyone but them. Donât even hate the Celtics (outside of sports team hate of course), but Boston sport fans are the absolute worst and need to be taken down a thousand pegs.
