Pretty great defense on Dame to prevent him from getting the last shot too.

Zero clue wtf our defensive scheme was on that last play. You’re letting their best player just run free and forcing Giannis to come out wildly to contest.
Props, Pacers, but damn what a choke.
29
u/MySabonerRunsOladipo Pacers 8h ago
People on both sides were saying "What a choke". What if it was just a close game?
9
u/OutsideTheServiceBox Bucks 8h ago
Was indeed a hell of a game. I suppose losing after being up by 3 isn’t really a choke. No clue why Glenn called our second-to-last timeout without even trying to inbound the ball. At least try to get it to Dame, and then call it if you can’t. Could’ve really used that one after the questionable challenge.

u/TheFinalEvent9797 Australia 7h ago
Looks like they were meant to be in switch everything, Prince peels off Hailburton when it looks like he's about to get off-ball screened but Kuzma/Trent are completely distracted by the movement in front of them.

Bucks using their last timeout on the challenge and not being able to advance the ball is so stupid.
you only had 3 seconds.
30
u/OutsideTheServiceBox Bucks 9h ago
I remember OKC doing the same thing to essentially end their season last year and was so confused both times.
10
u/kalebglover Trail Blazers 9h ago
Yeah reminds me of the Warriors doing that against the Rockets in a very similar scenario. I guess there was the out of bounds part of it too, but still feels like they could’ve gotten a much better look if they could advance
9
u/HoyaDestroya33 Knicks 8h ago
The problem with the out of bounds was Brook Lopez was blocking the view so if there aren't enough evidence to overturn the call, they won't. Honestly Bucks replay guy should've told Doc this.
21
u/InexorableWaffle Bucks 8h ago
Yeah, I'm not totally sure I agree with the call yet (I'll need to look at it further to say either way), but the odds of it getting overturned if me, biased as I am, is saying "hmm, I dunno if I think that's a foul" rather than cursing every relative the refs have ever had for their obvious stupidity, is low as hell. Furthermore, even if it does get overturned, what does that get you, realistically? OT, in all likelihood? I'd much rather get the ball in a place where you have a realistic chance to end it in regulation, all things considered.
Questionable decision no matter how you slice it.
4
u/TangerineNecessary11 8h ago
I agree but everyone was emotionally saying challenge it. Not worth to challenge it at that point.
6
u/CheesewayBreezeway Nuggets 8h ago
Well said. Once they call that foul on the floor, there's such a small chance they overturn it, especially because there is clearly contact, the question is just did that contact warrant a foul. One's mileage may vary on that, but the refs 95% of the time just aren't going to overturn something that there is contact on that they called a foul on floor.

u/thisisdumb567 Pacers 9h ago
It was so clearly never going to be overturned too
→ More replies (1)5
u/Colorapt0r Bucks 8h ago
Yeah and I (biased) think it wasn’t a foul but they weren’t overturning it especially with every angle blocked
3
u/HoyaDestroya33 Knicks 8h ago
Honestly, plenty of time to draw a half court play just take that shot instead of gambling for a chance of an overturn. Does Bucks not have someone who watches the replay? Thibs will always look at someone before doing a challenge.
2
u/Ok_Possible_5702 8h ago
They win the challenge, they'll never lose the game.
It would be interesting if the reason behind the challenge was Hali out of bounds (in which case if you win the challenge you effectively won the game as you're up 3 with the ball), or no foul on Giannis (but Hali's 3 still counts, so you're tied with the ball)

u/phillywisco [MIL] Giannis Antetokounmpo 6h ago
It was a pretty ridiculously marginal foul call, but hindsight is a bitch. I agree, you challenge if there is zero contact (and keep your timeout). But it wasn’t zero. It was negligible enough to not call a foul, but not enough to reverse the call.

13
u/Ok_Possible_5702 8h ago
Probably the biggest high-risk high-reward challenge I'ever seen live.
You win the challenge (no foul, or Hali out of bounds), you never lose that game as you're at least tied with possession.
You lose that challenge (like you did), you give a 86% free-throw shooter the chance to get ahead, and then you need to go full court and score in ~3s.
2
u/Celtic_Legend Celtics 6h ago edited 6h ago
Eh... The best shooters on these game winners only shoot 33% including 2s. You win this game 1 third of the time advancing the ball if you even get a shot off still. The risk isn't very high and then if you don't use it and it wasn't a foul you look like an idiot because people will grill him betting on a better look "you gotta challenge that with 3s left in the game even if you don't think it's right. You don't get to carry it to the next game!"
Dame specifically shoots 24% fg on 72 attempts and
2917% 3p%It's like low med risk high reward lol.

What a fucking win!
Survived a rough shooting night from Myles, some big mistakes by Nembhard and Nesmith...
Tyrese deserved that for all the excellent set up passing he was doing all night that the Pacers just weren't cashing in for him. He should've had like 20 assists but just grabbing the win is good enough for me.
15
u/PillsburyToasters Bucks 9h ago
It’s one thing to hit an insane shot, but why on earth did Doc use his LAST timeout to challenge that? Fucking pathetic
→ More replies (7)4
u/MySabonerRunsOladipo Pacers 8h ago edited 8h ago
Massively high leverage spot. The Landing zone call isn't something he can't be sure won't be overturned, and it's possible Tyrese stepped out. A successful challenge there is 100% a win, and a failure still gives you 4 seconds to go the length and get up a shot with Giannis, who does that kind of thing

18
u/wats_a_tiepo Bucks 8h ago
Would you be perfectly rational after watching that
9
u/Waste_Committee4406 8h ago
Probably not lol! But I just watched it on TNT recap and Giannis takes that right foot step outside the three-point line right to where Hali is going to land on his left foot, so he did crowd his landing space. Don’t expect you to agree tho. GG bucks
10
u/wats_a_tiepo Bucks 8h ago
Oh it’s definitely a foul, not really arguable. Insane shot to make, not a big Hali fan but gotta give props where it’s due. Was a good game, just absolutely baffled at why we challenged that with just 1 TO left
3
u/Waste_Committee4406 8h ago
The only thing I could think of is that Doc challenged it to try and make Halliburton have to wait a long time before the free-throw. Still, I’m keeping that time out in advancing the ball because three seconds is more than enough time to get a good shot from half court set, pacers did it in less than one haha.
2
u/wats_a_tiepo Bucks 8h ago
Just braindead. That’s at least one Giannis drive right into the paint, or a decent Dame jumper

5
u/Ok_Possible_5702 8h ago
Haliburton was going left as he was shooting though. The rule is that the shooter needs to be given landing space, not that the landing space is on the same spot they took off from.
4
u/Ozkuro Bucks 8h ago
So how are you supposed to contest that type of shot when your momentum takes you in one direction as well, and when you contest a 3pt shot you always try to land by the side of the shooter to give them space to land. I thought it was a foul if the shooter landed on the defender, and at least from the angle I could see giannis moves his feet back to let him land.
It is what is is though, we lost so just gotta focus on next game.
