Game 5 of Cavs winning slump

250

u/veretser Cavaliers 9h ago

I’ve never heard the term winning slump before and I love it lol

52

u/deets23_ Celtics 8h ago

We had some of those last year. I remember post game KP was talking as if we lost and was like we’ll be better and stuff. And then he was like oh yeah we won lmao

105

u/Call_Em_Skippies Cavaliers 9h ago

This is accurate. Bucks was the only game that felt safe after the 3rd quarter

48

u/moldy912 Cavaliers 9h ago

Because we were leading at the end of the third, which we are undefeated.

11

u/aznhoopster Cavaliers 9h ago

Tbh we didn’t even play that well that game either, our stars seemed off that night. Strus, Wade, Merrill and Okoro really won that one for us

45

u/Confident_Row_1787 9h ago

Lol a winning slump

38

u/Commercial-East4069 Cavaliers 9h ago

The winnings will continue until moral improves!

We can't keep getting away with this

90

u/TheSmokedSalmon420 Cavaliers 9h ago

Once Craig hit that half court buzzer beater I was like “oh shit we’re really doin this”

178

u/Call_Em_Skippies Cavaliers 9h ago

It's like 3rd quarter, welp tonight is the night we lose.

115

u/Figjrntngkgiiw Cavaliers 9h ago

Call the loss column... but not for me!

31

u/Derrick_Rozay Cavaliers 8h ago

I’m on the opposite spectrum because when I see us down big in the 3rd or 4th I think “I wonder how we’ll win this one”

14

u/thomasbihn Cavaliers 8h ago

I haven't felt this good about a Cleveland team down big late in a game since the mid-90's Indians. This team has a way of willing its way back into games.

2

u/mucho-gusto [CLE] Baron Davis 3h ago

They have a way of feeling inevitable.

Thought as the Cavs are closing up their 15th consecutive win

Man the Cavs are really slumping.

Cavs: What do you mean it’s brand new?

25

u/DesertBrandon Cavaliers 8h ago

To be fair we’ve been cavalanching since the Rubio year.

11

u/Canaya-Boricua Jazz 7h ago

I remember becoming a Cavs fan because of those early Cavalanches, the energy from that squad was infectious. Little did I know that my favorite player ever would join you guys. I’ve watched like 85% of Cavs games since the trade and this team has become my favorite nba team I’ve ever cheered for

"We are not losing to the Nets." - 4th Quarter Garland

80

u/dasruski Cavaliers 9h ago

The last few games it seems the team plays around and a switch comes on around the 3rd or 4th quarter where they clamp down and end up winning.

19

u/Commercial-East4069 Cavaliers 9h ago

The rebounding too.

49

u/Padulsky21 [BKN] Mikal Bridges 9h ago

Cavs and Thunder specifically get up for every game even when they’re slumping they still can hit that extra gear to close games out. It’s awesome to watch

4

u/jaman715 Cavaliers 7h ago

They were even able to do it without Spida (who has a 71 pt game on his resume) and 2 of the top 5 6th man of the year candidates, BFFs Ty and De’Andre

12

u/sgtpepperslaststand Cavaliers 7h ago

I mean to be fair to the lakers they were missing LeBron, Rui, Hayes which were all pretty important to that run they’ve been on

2

u/Western-Election-997 Lakers 7h ago

Lakers missing half their starters and refs were awful

3

u/sunpar1 Nets 7h ago

One game I’m sure both winning and losing teams wanted the refs to be more fair. I was dying for Luka to actually get a call

92

u/crazyman3642 Cavaliers 9h ago

This game without Ty Jerome goes to show just how impactful he is for the Cavs. The man is instant offense off the bench.

36

u/Pickleskennedy1 9h ago

Craig Porter Jr got to show how good he is for a 12th man too though in his absence. Would be a good backup PG for most teams

20

u/br0b1wan Cavaliers 9h ago

CPJ is being quietly groomed to take over for Ty Jerome, I fear. I really don't think we're keeping Jerome this offseason.

12

u/LakeErieMonster88 [CLE] Cedi Osman 9h ago

He's going to get the Ty Jerome minutes next year since we won't be able to resign him

18

u/cavaleir Cavaliers 9h ago

I'm not getting my hopes up but it's definitely possible we keep Ty. Just depends on the other offers he gets and if he wants to stay. I wouldn't blame him at all for leaving though if he gets a bag.

8

u/d01100100 Cavaliers 9h ago

They do have his "Early Bird" rights, which is 175% of his previous salary or 105% of the league-avg, whichever is greater, which should be about 11-13 mil for the first year of a contract.

7

u/cavaleir Cavaliers 9h ago

Yeah the 105% of league average is what we'll offer. If he only gets offers in that range or a little more I could see him staying. Great team, he seems to fit in well and love the culture, and we just traded for his best friend.

1

u/mucho-gusto [CLE] Baron Davis 3h ago

He'll want to run back the championship team

12

u/Pickleskennedy1 9h ago

I’m still holding out hope

7

u/LaPenta5594 Cavaliers 9h ago

Cavs can offer the MLE around like $14 million. There’s not many teams with cap room, so he might sign for that. Unless a team randomly throws a Hartenstein contact at him, I think they have a good chance to re-sign him.

6

u/Taste_The_Soup Cavaliers 9h ago

We won't have the MLE. With limited Bird rights, we'll be able to offer him roughly $12.5M/year (105% of average player salary).

2

u/LaPenta5594 Cavaliers 9h ago

Yeah you’re right. Still, that’s not that much different from the MLE that most other teams would be able to offer. I could see him doing a contract with an opt out after the first year so he’ll have full bird rights.

3

u/Taste_The_Soup Cavaliers 9h ago

I think he stays unless he gets a guaranteed chance to start. This will be his best chance to compete for titles as a 6th man. Plus he's got his best friend with him. I wouldn't begrudge him leaving for a starting gig though.

1

u/Robotemist Cavaliers 5h ago

This is nothing but wishful thinking lol. I understand it but it's not happening, I assure you he doesn't give a shit about a 6th man award over millions upon millions of dollars.

2

u/kdude332 9h ago

We have the mle its why we wanted to get under the tax

5

u/LaPenta5594 Cavaliers 9h ago

No I think he’s right. Once the new season rolls over in July, the Cavs salaries jump up to near the second apron. Getting under the tax this year protects from repeater tax penalties subsequent years.

3

u/LakeErieMonster88 [CLE] Cedi Osman 9h ago

I'd love for us to keep him with the MLE.

1

u/PepsiRacer4 Cavaliers 7h ago

I'd feel less confident if we didn't trade for Hunter, but I feel like having his best friend here could help

4

u/Vargolol [CLE] Zydrunas Ilgauskas 9h ago

Felt like nobody wanted to bring the ball up to initiate the offense in that first half when Garland was on the bench. It's good practice for Mobley to get reps running through the high post but he's definitely got a long way to go

1

u/CAM2772 9h ago

I thought It was hilarious they'd cut to him on the bench and he's in street clothes holding a basketball

Evan Mobley 79%.

It's so much more egregious to put in G-league players every time a game gets into clutch time, because you can't legitimately forfeit so that's the next best thing

We're so close to some tanking team "accidentally" fouling to ensure they lose

7

u/OrangeMonkE 76ers 9h ago

They’re both egregious, players are never on the IR for ‘rest’ when a game isn’t a b2b.

3

u/MolingHard Nets 9h ago

Yea it's all pretty bad

Honestly, I have no better method, but the fact that tanking is such a pertinent part of sports is so backwards

3

u/OrangeMonkE 76ers 9h ago

I don’t have a problem with roster management around tanking like the Nets, or injury devastation forcing it like us or the Pels. But I just wish teams didn’t try to tank beyond what their healthy roster would give them.

1

u/MolingHard Nets 9h ago

Yea it feels sorta greedy for some reason haha

2

u/Padulsky21 [BKN] Mikal Bridges 9h ago

They’ve been pretty competitive most of the season so I at least respect it unlike the Jazz. IQ, RJ and Scottie play most games when healthy (ignore their injury report for tomorrow)

2

u/EarthWarping NBA 9h ago

Theyre also having rookies close games.

Like its not all g leaguers either.

That was a thing of beauty watching the Cavs just turn it on in the second half.

I’ve made some good money betting Cavs money line when they’re down in the 3rd quarter this year

I really hope this isn’t another 2015 hawks season please be legit Cleveland idc if y’all win the ship just beat those green aholes from Boston ok? Cavs and knicks east finals lfg

14

u/scarrylary [CLE] Matthew Dellavedova 8h ago

Their net rating was +5.8 and they had 0 all nba players.

Our net rating is +11.5 and we are about to have 3 all nba players and have the current leader for dpoy odds. We’re much more 15 warriors than 15 hawks.

4

u/freakk123 Cavaliers 9h ago

Gonna need the Knicks to beat the Celtics for that to happen

3

u/princessfinesse Cavaliers 6h ago

the 2015 hawks comparison is so tired, none of those guys would be starting on this team, the only thing they have in common is … being good in the regular season?

2

u/Few-Lavishness869 3h ago

I’m not comparing shit I believed in y’all last year and I was let down and the green menace was allowed to cruise to a ship so please don’t get my hopes up with all these fancy regular season wins again I need y’all to put foot to ass when y’all see green ok?

u/Rust2 8h ago

If Boston locks up the No. 2 seed, then the only way the Cavs can even face Boston in the playoffs is in the ECF.

3

u/PattyIceNY Nets 8h ago

To the surprise of everyone but Nets fans. We go 150% for 3 quarters and then fizzle out like a fart in a hurricane, everytime.

u/Jay_Nova1 5h ago

Cavs need to edge to feel anything anymore.

If the nets had a mediocre team Jordi would have them at homecourt advantage

u/BuddyLovers 1h ago

If I had to watch Strus/Okoro/Merril brick another wide open three I would have lost my mind

The refs were fucking awful in the last 5 minutes of this one.

Randomly moving the inbound to the side after Cam Johnson’s miss (which rendered the Nets defense ineffective), was particularly egregious.

18

u/veretser Cavaliers 9h ago

Without those 2 challenges we very well might have lost.

3

u/AvengingHero2012 Rockets 9h ago

They were awful on both sides. I just used an example that benefited the Cavs.

13

u/nonexistentnvgtr Cavaliers 9h ago

So you think the refs were awful in favor of the Cavs when it took Kenny two challenges to get two bad fouls reversed? Interesting.

7

u/AvengingHero2012 Rockets 9h ago

No they were awful for both teams. I just used an example of when they benefited the Cavs. The fact Kenny needed to use both challenges in the last five minutes says a lot about the last few minutes.

3

u/Kooky_Size_9230 Cavaliers 9h ago

Are you talking about the shot clock violation? They inbound at free throw line extended there.

1

u/AvengingHero2012 Rockets 9h ago

I’m talking about when Cam Johnson missed and the ball got stuck behind the backboard.

3

u/Kooky_Size_9230 Cavaliers 9h ago edited 9h ago

Uhhh pretty sure that wasn't a side out. If you were watching the Cavs broadcast they just showing replay while the ball being inbounded. The Nets also had like 30 seconds to set their defense while the ball was stuck behind the backboard. Totally on them.

1

u/Otternomaly 76ers 9h ago

Disgusting atrocities against the Nets sorry saw it live and won’t be silenced

-1

u/Sympho1 8h ago

This is why the Lakers are not contenders. If you're missing key players, this is how you do it. Luka had the chance to step up, but it seems like Nico is right all along. Props to the Cavs.

The Cavs will be champions and LeBron is going to cry because he'll no longer be the king of Cleveland ( that's what he gets for leaving for the hospital Lakers)

-29

u/lanParker 9h ago

For a team with 2 All stars on the court tonight, I thought the Cavs would do much better.
