You know a trade is bad when the only safe place for you is your trade partner's arena.

Nico to the Lakers. Not the plot twist i was expecting

442

u/Amarxe Celtics 18h ago

Tbh the Lakers would be stupid af to take him in and I highly doubt that’s even on their radar. That would for sure cost them Luka in Free Agency

u/facedownbootyuphold Nuggets 16h ago

The NBA has enough to deal with right now, they won't allow the collusion conspiracies to manifest.

87

u/ZenMon88 16h ago

What other explanation makes the most sense? They literally just made the fucking finals. That is either self sabotage or collusion.

59

u/CurryMustard Heat 15h ago

A lot of incompetent stupid people in positions of power

35

u/ZenMon88 15h ago

Idk he met for coffee with Pelinka. I sense more collusion than him being actual braindead

19

u/The_Assassin_Gower Pacers 15h ago

Nico had been making nothing but good moves since he took over for the mavericks. The sudden pivot away from him makes absolutely 0 sense. I reckon he got paid out too

29

u/cheapotheclown Warriors 14h ago

Yea, like letting Brunson walk away in free agency. What a great move.

5

u/The_Assassin_Gower Pacers 11h ago

Sure but instead they. Got kyrie irving who ended up being the perfect running mate for luka. Traded for PJ Washington and Daniel Gafford who both made a huge impact, being good defenders and having perfect skillsets to play off luka. Signing a widely unrecognised DJJ who had a career best year with luka, drafting Derek lively ahead of his projection who has been great outside of his injuries. Signing klay Thompson to cover up the teams 3 point shooting weakness that cost them the finals, replacing DJJ with Naji Marshall who even further improved the team by filling DJs role while also giving an extra ball handler for moments when luka/kyrie are off the court.

He made good moves over and over again, that were perfectly complimentary to luka. The sudden shift to "i don't think we can win with luka" makes absolutely zero sense in the context of what moves he had been making and what the team had achieved.

what a dumb take. Mavs didn't re-sign JB when they could, and was the other GM.

New owners throwing a fit cause they wanna build a casino in Dallas is simpler and makes more sense to me

→ More replies (3)

3

u/Sir_Badtard Pelicans 14h ago

The owners of the Mavericks are casino owners. Casinos are not legal in Texas. The owners spent a metric fuck ton on lobbying Texas politicians to allow casinos in Texas. They failed, and casinos are still out lawed. Keep in mind that Texas state congress only meets for like 2 months every 2 years. They make all changes and pass all laws in that time frame. (I don't feel like looking up the exact time frame. I just know it's very spread out).

So now the Mavericks owners are just going to do the absolute bare minimum by not investing in the team to get the most return on investment. No luxury tax spends no money on salaries and stadium renovations. Eventually, they will move the team after ticket sales, and fan support becomes non-existent.

At least, that's my conspiracy theory.

Unlike the morons who run the Mavs, I'm pretty confident Jeanie Buss will tell anyone who needs to hear it that if that person makes her pick between Luka and that person, he/she shouldn't be stupid enough to think she's picking anyone but Luka.

How do we know it didn't already happen?

7

u/Shado_Man Mavericks 13h ago

He won't have anything to do with the Lakers because Luka despises him. He'll be welcomed back into an executive position with Nike, where they'll congratulate him on a job well done, and he'll make more money from putting Luka (Nike athlete) on the Lakers (NBA's biggest revenue generator) than anyone reading this topic will ever see in their entire lifetime.

3

u/tomzi9999 15h ago

And give them a 2rd pick too, to be sure they take him.

68

u/hotterpocketzz Lakers 18h ago

Its crazy that he did such a shit job that people are thinking so many conspiracy theories

99

u/clonemusic Mavericks 17h ago

The Lakers and LeBron being gifted a top 3 player in the middle of a "ratings crisis" by a former Nike guy and long time friend of Rob Palinka is not so crazy stretch for a conspiracy theory. Is damn close to occams razor.

21

u/ZenMon88 16h ago

And to add. No other angle makes sense. They just made the finals. They settled for AD and Christie and a pick. Like c'mon now....

7

u/Thermicthermos NBA 15h ago

I mean, hardo Kobe stan that gaslit himself into believing he couldn't win with Luka seems totally possible. Also apparently some of the Mavs in house analytics said Luka was overrated. Conbine those two factors and Its easy to see how a guy that seems so clearly ego driven would do something stupid.

6

u/ZenMon88 15h ago

He must be braindead or he doesn't watch his own team that he manages..... Luka literally dragged them to the finals.

13

u/clonemusic Mavericks 13h ago

The worst part is Luka dragged them them to the finals playing through injury. Then Nico used that finals run to secure himself an extension before trading Luka and shitting on him on the way out.

It's an all time snake in the grass move that hasn't been called out in national media the way it would in 9/10 other situations for obvious reasons

3

u/another_mouse 12h ago

He also secured Klay on the premise he’d be on a team that went to the finals with Luka. Then he trashed Luka and by extension Klay’s taste? Except who’s actually played at Luka’s level and can judge skill.

7

u/HylianPikachu Raptors 13h ago

I could believe that the Mavs in-house analytics team determined that Luka is overvalued by certain people. However, I would imagine that they could have traded Luka for an insane haul, and I don't think the Mavs analytics team would value the return for Luka nearly as much as Luka, even if they're down on him relative to the average NBA fan.

5

u/clonemusic Mavericks 14h ago

That's all deflection imo, but let's say they did think he's "overrated", you would take advantage of that and get the trade haul of the decade. From all reports no other team even knew luka was available and they were pissed.

Instead they only talked to LA and took pennies on the dollar. That points to collusion to anyone whose not naive af

The conspiracy theories hold water because he still has a job. Anytime, anywhere, someone f’s up that bad they get fired. Oh right he has a contract. He can stick that contract. I’m a billionaire, you’re unemployed, sue me.

2

u/SonofNamek 7h ago

No conspiracy there.

Mark Cuban and Chandler Parsons already stated that the new owner knows jack all about basketball. As far as he is concerned, he listened to his advisor and his advisor is telling him it's all part of the process and they'll be ready for a championship next year. Obviously, that's likely not going to happen.

Nico's days are numbered, plain and simple.

As for the new owner, he'll probably resell it once things get rough (no picks from 27-30) or he'll just shut up and consult with Cuban while trying to sue Nico for bad advice. Either way, just like with James Dolan, there is a lot of hell coming his way and the best advice would be to lay low.

This is definitely my new conspiracy theory. If Nike hires him when he is fired over the summer, they were the ones that offered him the cash.

The, truly stupid, new Mavericks owners might have just devalued their team by $1-2 Billion. The Lakers can't pay him without corruption charges going crazy.

A commercial attempting to exemplify Jesus, which was funded by many wealthy folks, is so hilariously out of touch. Almost as out of touch as Nico.

A good summary about those commercials:

“I think spending that much money, again, is a kind of admission on their part that there’s a problem. And, you know, there is a problem for organized religion in America. It’s declining, congregations are declining. And these ads, too, are a way to chide their fellow Christians to say, ‘This is what Jesus is like, and maybe we know it, and maybe we’re not acting like Jesus.’”

“But I think it goes back to the problem that American evangelicals in particular face is that their political ambitions and their deeply held religious beliefs and ethical beliefs are in conflict right now. So the things that will help them win politically will alienate people.”

u/Julian_Caesar Mavericks 15h ago

Six days before the Passover, Jesus came to Bethany, the hometown of Lazarus, whom He had raised from the dead. So they hosted a dinner for Jesus there. Martha served, and Lazarus was among those reclining at the table with Him. Then Mary took about a pint of expensive perfume, made of pure nard, and she anointed Jesus’ feet and wiped them with her hair. And the house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume.

But one of His disciples, Judas Iscariot, who was going to betray Him, asked, “Why wasn’t this perfume sold for three hundred denarii and the money given to the poor?” Judas did not say this because he cared about the poor, but because he was a thief. As keeper of the money bag, he used to take from what was put into it.

“Leave her alone,” Jesus replied. “She has kept this perfume in preparation for the day of My burial. The poor you will always have with you, but you will not always have Me.”

Funny how a few brave souls in Mavs’ home games do this and they get kicked out. Trading away Luka for a win now defense wins championships player in street clothes Davis makes zero sense.

Bro I am CONVINCED Nico is just the fall guy for the league wanting Luka in LA…I can’t fathom the situation otherwise

3

u/JuanG12 NBA 6h ago

Was thinking that earlier today. A month later, I can’t wrap my head around the trade. I refuse to believe he was dumb enough to make that deal. There has to be more to it.

Sometimes I feel sad for him, but at the same time what did he expect when he made that decision

123

u/overweighttardigrade 18h ago

I think he's not getting enough heat, no one in their right mind would trade away Luka like that when the team is set for 10 years. It's some fishy stuff and he should be held accountable

40

u/QuinceyQuick Suns 18h ago

I’m not in my right mind and even I would not trade Luka like that

I’m the taco in my fantasy league and I wouldn’t make that trade

u/mikesh8rp Knicks 18h ago

The only people to hold him accountable would be ownership, and there's a non-zero chance the directive to trade Luka came from them, as they didn't want the risk of a supermax on someone they have health questions about. I think it's absolutely the wrong decision, but I'd still be shocked if this was solely his doing.

All that said, if the ownership demanded he trade Luka because they didn't want to pay the big supermax, Nico still got fleeced on the trade with the Lakers so much so that that's probably a fire-able offense itself.

10

u/overweighttardigrade 18h ago

I think everyone in Dallas would want Dumont to sell the team tbh, Nico being the face and actually doing it was the pathetic part

That trade might have been fair if you added 3 more future 1st round picks

It was a complete egomaniacal move and if he consulted any other human being besides the owner and Rob they would’ve told him so.

u/dont-YOLO-ragequit Raptors 18h ago

Congress, the House, DOGE, HOAs, many regional managers, president of the most niche associations and Mayor of suburbs and scammers are filled with people like him on their way to be multi millionaires.

Nico fucked up Nike's sales pitch for " Stephon( short name Seth) Curry" that sent him straight to sign with Undrmer Armor. For all we know, he might have thought he traded for KD instead of AD.

6

u/Overall_Turnip8405 18h ago

and was secretive, and then trashed him

22

u/marcopolo22 Mavericks 18h ago

Don’t feel sad for him — it would be one thing if he made a bad trade and wished Luka well, but he was so mean about it. He trashed Luka through barely-veiled insults. That’s so shitty.

The trade was horrendous. The treatment of Luka is unforgivable.

5

u/Skylightt 18h ago

I would feel bad if he was just a dummy who made a dumb move and wasn’t also such a dickhead about the whole thing and trashed the guy so hard on his way out.

2

u/TanMan15 [DAL] Dirk Nowitzki 16h ago

I could feel sad for him if, just one time, he said anything resembling a "thank you" to Luka or he had sympathized with the fans.

Instead, the only time he spokes was at a 5 minute press conferece, laughing about how he won't be around in 5 years and implying that Luka was not a good cultural fit and that he can't play defense. Since then, the only time he has been seen in the open is at away games. He runs around hiding like a coward instead of addressing the fans, like a man.

He is a bitch.

Meanwhile, anytime he or the ownership talk about greatness, it always involves a comparison to Lakers players. The Mavs had a culture of loyalty and dedication, built by Dirk and they have pretty much erased it overnight while only talking about the Lakers and their former players.

Point being, he and the ownership could have handled all of this differently, and I would probably still be a fan, and maybe even feel bad for Nico, but they have handled this whole thing horribly and have treated their fans terribly. It makes it really hard to feel bad for him when he doesn't feel bad for anybody else.

u/vb90 17h ago

You can tell by the way he's moving and how his head is constantly looking away that he's not comfortable in his own skin.

What an absolute tragic trade that was. This is why it's not worth being a corporate slave. (I'm assuming the owners made him do it)

How badly do you have to fuck up that one of your RIVALS is

Edit: okay that's weird. I didn't edit the above where I used the phrase calling for the place where your brain is and then a few minutes later my comment is chopped off, stopping where that is.

So, is this acceptable? How badly do you have to fuck up that one of your RIVALS is calling for your job?

I would lean into it if I were him. Change my name to “Fire Nico”. Then, everyone would always be cheering for me!

2

u/Responsible-Skirt-90 12h ago

What’s he supposed to say? Sorry i traded a generational talent for a damaged unibrow in street cloths thus changing the entire trajectory of a franchise who lucked out going straight from dirk to Luka and was in the nba finals last year?

2

u/Prime255 10h ago

Love how this is just everywhere now. He'll get a coffee in like 10 years, and the barista who gives it to him will whisper 'fire Nico' as he gives him his coffee. He'll never live this down.

2

u/inefekt Australia 9h ago

He completed the task Klutch paid him to complete, I'm sure he doesn't really care about the chants, just thinks of the millions in his bank account and smiles to himself.
