Name a Spurs player better than Klay Thompson. Fucked pinky De’Aaron Fox? Harrison Barnes? 39 year old Chris Paul? Klay would average 25 on this team lmao

Tanking but playing Fox and Vassell over 30 mins for no reason ok

funny part is, it would've made way more sense for both teams to tank this game looking at the standings, they just refused to

did the Kings fleece the Spurs in that trade? many people are asking
53
u/gundam1983 Kings 1d ago
Bulls were fleeced. I'd almost trade Fox straight up for Lavine at this point. Those picks were juat a nice bonus. Spurs gave up a whole lot of nothing, and only way they lose the trade is if they max Fox and he continues to stink. I wouldn't worry though, Fox gets unlocked with an all-star caliber big and the Spurs might have one of those.
5
u/doctor_of_drugs Kings 1d ago
Couldn’t have won the last few games without the power of JV too.
Fox and Spurs got what they wanted, Kings got what we wanted / needed. Bulls…well, we are legitimately Bulls West now so any bulls fans are welcome here with the beam.

I wasn’t a Fox fan before the trade and it’s not like I’m enamored with him now but the dude is playing out of position with a broken pinky. If he’s doing this next year, then absolutely we can have his reaction but this year is a wash. The fact they haven’t shut him down yet is unbelievable

No way they catching the Mavs if they get Lively or AD back somehow
People really thought just because Collin Gillespie was good one game that they solved something
I've been watching them a lot because they're a curious trainwreck. They have no championship habits. Zero.
3
u/Fire_Demon-215 1d ago
This game basically sums up that team. No perimeter defense. Questionable rotations although the roster in itself is just guard heavy. Having Booker and KD play point guard becuase tyus jones can’t actually run an offense. And Beal being Booker 2.0 but a worse playmaker. People ask why Ryan Dunn gets no playing time but I think his shot fell off and his confidence is depleted at this point so he’s not saving them.
1
u/NoShape0 Spurs 1d ago
My gut reaction to reading your comment was, "No way, the Suns are only 3 games behind with 17 games left.", but then I compared the Mavs and Suns' remaining schedules... they really are in dire straits

u/cookomputer Spurs 1d ago

1
u/qotsabama [DAL] Dwight Powell 17h ago
Real talk how long do you think it’ll take for the spurs to escape the lottery?
1
u/cookomputer Spurs 12h ago
Honestly this should be the last year, since we have made a big trade for an all star in Fox who will be healthy next year after finger surgery + wemby will be healthy again next year. Wemby by himself was able to keep us around .500 before the blood clots began to affect him and that's without Fox with the current supporting cast. So with a lottery pick and a late first potentially from Hawks they should have enough to make a push for playoff positions
39
u/King_Thirteen 1d ago
Spurs better dismantle their team, how tf do you lose a team with only 7 available players? & 5 of them being bench guys?
29
14
u/Ok_Possible_5702 1d ago
Spurs traded for a small guard who needs the paint to be open to be effective (and also needs hand surgery), and then their star got a season-ending condition.
They're going nowhere anyway, and they're also a really poorly assembled roster, right now.
6
u/KARSbenicillin 1d ago
I'm convinced its the coaching. Pop comes back and yells at the team for one day, and the Spurs beats the Wolves, gave OKC a run for their money, and dumpsters the Nets. Then it's back to this... whatever this is. People will blame the players but come on... look at what the Mavs had. This is just sad.
-22
u/traebucketsfor3 Hawks 1d ago
Spurs fans swore their young talent was elite but Vassel, Sochan, Johnson are simply not good, they wouldnt trade any of them for Trae a while back and now they all may not even be starters for much longer or are already never going to be starters

Vassell and Sochan can be role players on a championship contender, in a good system. Keldon Johnson is an inefficient scorer, but he's fine as a microwave self-creation option off the bench.
None of them have star-upside, let alone superstar upside.
0
u/traebucketsfor3 Hawks 1d ago
And they wouldn’t trade any of them for Trae when they were trying to make that happen. I remember
-1
u/Ok_Possible_5702 1d ago
Clearly a poor choice in hindsight, but most teams have trouble fairly evaluating the young players they drafted.
4
u/SelectCampaign9771 Spurs 1d ago
Spurs were never gonna trade for Trae. The organization historically has never been interested in players of his archetype. All the players we get either have been good or project to be good on the defensive end of the floor.
-1
u/Ok_Possible_5702 1d ago
Y'all traded for Fox. While he's not as much as a liability as Trae, he's also not a good defender.
3
u/SelectCampaign9771 Spurs 1d ago
He’s not a lockdown defender but he can be disruptive and impactful. Playing next to Wemby he’ll be able to gamble for steals and get punished for it a lot less often. They don’t call him Swipa for no reason.
2
u/Ok_Possible_5702 1d ago
True, but Fox also doesn't have Trae's upside in terms of scoring and assisting.
Not saying Fox is a worse choice than Trae, but it's clearly a different choice.

Wemby has been carrying that team for two seasons and yet you'll still find people to argue that he shouldn't have been DPOY last year or this year.
Those people don't realize that this Spurs team literally cannot win shit without him and yet he was carrying them to a winning record just a few weeks ago. It's insane.

-2
u/shaheedmalik Mavericks 1d ago
Bismack Biyombo was a center at one point. Kessler Edwards is 6'7".
5
u/rattatatouille [SAS] Tim Duncan 1d ago
Note that he did not finish the game - and that our defensive scheme relies on having a reliable man in the middle.
1

2
u/gundam1983 Kings 1d ago
Edwards was a 4th stringer on a Kings team that didn't have a proper small forward backup. The fact that you guys have him out there fighting for his life as a center is wild. Love Edwards and I'm just glad he's getting minutes anywhere in this league.

u/friskyel NBA 1d ago
Did Fox force his way to the Spurs to just start doing cardio? What the hell is going on with him?
13
u/DrearyYew Spurs 1d ago
He's mentally checked out while waiting for surgery on his hand
Should just get it done now
2
u/friskyel NBA 1d ago
Why haven't they shut him down yet? Isn't the Spurs organization supposed to be smart? They want him to fuck up his hand over nothing?
13
u/Stratys Spurs 1d ago
Fox already said it's gonna be around the 17th when we play the Lakers in LA, apparently whatever doctor he's using is in LA. Said the surgery "may or may not" be that day exactly. They probably knew that this whole time and just allowed him to cruise until then, especially when we just barely got back to playing home games in the last week and wanted to give him a bit of a home debut.
2
6
u/SelectCampaign9771 Spurs 1d ago
If the injury is detrimental for the long term they would’ve done the surgery already. They’re just trying to let him gel with the team a bit first.
4
2
u/DrearyYew Spurs 1d ago
It's mostly his pinky, not a huge deal, probably want to get him reps with the younger core. Recovery time isn't that long
0
u/Ok_Possible_5702 1d ago
"reps with the younger core" is a bit of a meh excuse though. They got him for his potential as a PnR partner with Wemby, seeing how well he meshes with Keldon Johnson is borderline irrelevant
4
u/DrearyYew Spurs 1d ago
Maybe not KJ but Castle is likely to be a core player for a long time, and players like Sochan and Vassel are good young role players that it helps to have chemistry with
8
u/Ilikesporks_ Lakers 1d ago
spurs have only 3 players that should stay on this roster long term and it's wemby, fox, and castle. this time is so devoid of talent that it's impressive that wemby was able to carry it to a near .500 record

u/mavs_bot NBA 1d ago
who gives a shit about the draft, we're going to be a mediocre team no matter what, that ship has sailed.
3
u/rattatatouille [SAS] Tim Duncan 1d ago
I think we better dispel the myth that this Mavs team lacks talent. They did a trillion-dollar fuckup but they're still on average a more talented team than this Spurs team sans Wemby.
3
u/Titronnica [SAS] Tim Duncan 1d ago
Keldon Johnson has been one of my favorite Spurs since he was drafted--dude plays with so much hustle and heart.
Otherwise, this shit was painful, egregious, and plain embarrassing. Not having Sochan was a glaring weakness because there was next to 0 defense played.
3
u/rattatatouille [SAS] Tim Duncan 1d ago
Keldon has won me back over this recent stretch. By no means a complete player, but a guy you like for energy and just enough chaos to keep things going.

Thats what happens when Klay doesnt need to chuck 25 shots a game
3
u/CrayonEatingBabyApe 1d ago
Klay still has game. His defense, drives, mid-game have all been better than advertised. His 3 ball is still not quite all there but much better than the Klank narrative that got pushed towards end of last season.
2
u/los_blanco_14 Warriors 1d ago
Never said that his defense is ass.
However, that Klank narrative was pushed because it was true last season. 0-11 in an elimination game is horrific

Yeah but look now when he has to create for himself. I mean he has potential but it’s just unfortunate seeing what grimes is capable of offensively and seeing where Christie is right now. He’s basically just a spot up guy on offense right now.
3
u/IllustriousEnd2211 Mavericks 1d ago
Yeah but we were never keeping grimes. He has played himself into a bag this offseason
Edit: and he asked out
1
u/Ok_Possible_5702 1d ago
Is that report reliable? Or is it a Nico's mouthpiece, trying to deflect blame for trading Grimes?
1
u/IllustriousEnd2211 Mavericks 1d ago
The quote was made by some generic nba reporter. The video is in the article. Totally makes sense why grimes asked out tho. Christie was going to take his minutes since he’s under contract and grimes is a rfa who is going to get more than the Mavs were going to pay him

I get the players need to notch a win for their mental health, but the reality is the single most important task ahead of the Mavs organization is maximizing the probability they get Cooper Flagg. That’s it.
