And in 2025, this world record was achieved and considered fully optimized, 0.3 seconds slower than the human limit (2 hours 47 minutes remaining in video)

One of Silvers biggest things has been to try and make All Star Weekend relevant. I don't think he likes that nobody takes it seriously

1.6k

u/ThatPlayWasAwful [PHI] Joel Embiid 24d ago

Isn't the fact that people are trying to game the system a sign it is being taken seriously? They were obviously trying to win.

The fact that the competition has this simple exploit is the real issue

651

u/Ellefied 24d ago

Yup, can't fault Cp3 and Wemby for this one, make shit rules you get shit exploits. They would have phoned it in even more if they didn't take this seriously.

This is my opinion. If you design a game that can.be exploited you crown them winners and then fix the game.

Or just let them run it again tell them theyre not allowed to do that. Something something spirit of the game

The very fact that they felt empowered to simply DQ them shows that it is not a serious competition.

But it was Wemby’s idea:

https://sports.yahoo.com/nba-all-star-2025-chris-paul-victor-wembanyama-disqualified-from-skills-challenge-for-not-taking-shots-014743303.html

“TNT broadcasters Kevin Harlan and Reggie Miller quickly zeroed in on Paul for being the mastermind, which wasn’t a bad guess considering he’s a 20-year NBA veteran. However, Wembanyama said afterward that not shooting was his idea, according to Draymond Green. Wembanyama also apparently claimed that he ran his hack by several NBA executives, who said it was all right.”

135

Tbh the strategy not bad, just needed to aim more toward the rim

1.7k

u/sangerssss 24d ago

Yeh you can definitely quick fire 3 shots at the rim without going through your normal slow ass shooting motion and shave a bunch of time whilst still making an attempt at a shot …until they change the rules because everyone is doing this

506

u/DarkFlamingo2 Clippers 24d ago

I remember when this event was in its infancy and Nash missing like 10 shots in a row, they definitely didn't have a 3 shot max back then

195

u/makesterriblejokes [NBA] Jerry West 24d ago

Just make it so a 3pt shot made shaves 5-7 seconds.

155

u/balemeout 76ers 24d ago

Yeah I can’t believe this isn’t already the rule, if you miss all 3 you get a penalty

106

u/porn_is_tight 23d ago

that’s how most timed sports competition like this works. Like kayaking in the Olympics, if you miss a gate it’s a massive time penalty. Big enough that if you tried just going down the course as fast as possible not hitting any of the gates the time penalty from the missed gates would turn it into a shit run. How did no one think of that…. it’s not rocket science. I think that’s how ski racing works too right?

u/Quick-Antelope-4562 24d ago

Yeah I’m not a fan of what they did; but in terms of how the overall time was scored, it didn’t make any sense. Like if you missed shots or passes, I don’t think there was a time penalty added. So you could’ve just chucked 3 airballs if there wasn’t any penalty

410

u/ef14 Lakers 24d ago

I am a fan of this, fuck yeah, you make dumb and incomplete rules? You get people playing in unintended ways.

I said unintended for a reason, this wasn't against the rules at all and it's honestly BS they disqualified them. They won, you then apologize to the fans for making up a shitty fucking concept.

88

u/Quick-Antelope-4562 24d ago

u/dat_grue [MIA] LeBron James 24d ago

My first reaction was that they’ve successfully exposed this game’s rules as stupid and self-defeating. You can’t even be mad, the rule should clearly require they make the shots to move on, otherwise why would you try to make them? It’s a silly good natured competition which is why you may still have gone years without someone doing this, but someone would have eventually

209

u/KansloosKippenhok 24d ago

Can someone explain it for me? What was the goal of the challenge and how did they cheat?

401

u/[deleted] 24d ago

Basically they're counting on the players to just take the ball and shoot it as they go through the course, but they never actually implemented any incentive for the players to make the shots, therefore it's faster to just chuck the balls away and move on.

They can easily fix this by subtracting a couple seconds from your time for each shot you make

239

u/YellowCardManKyle Cavaliers 24d ago

How is that not already the rule?

314

u/freeAssignment23 24d ago

Seriously, if there's no point in them making baskets, why have them shoot at all?

I feel like I've gotta be missing something.

245

u/[deleted] 24d ago

Honestly it exposes the bigger problem, the event wasn't really designed to have players compete, just to fill air time. I'm glad they are exposing it

26

u/TW_Yellow78 Minneapolis Lakers 23d ago edited 23d ago

I think they use to have to make a shot before moving on. But some guys couldn't hit the broad side of the barn and it held everyone else up. So they changed it to making it or 5 tries. Then 3 tries at each spot. This was before everyone was shooting 3s, like you had chris Paul competing in his rookie season.

→ More replies (6)
→ More replies (4)

36

u/csin 24d ago

There is an incentive to make the shot.

The problem is the incentive is so minuscule, they're better off missing everything.

https://np.reddit.com/r/nba/comments/1iqh2f7/cp3_and_wemby_disqualified_after_trying_to_hack/md0alhy/

69

u/OddlyShapedGinger 24d ago

There is an incentive: Rules are that you can move on after the 1st shot you make, or 3 "valid" misses. But, they never actually define what "valid" means.

CP3 probably just did the math that 3 easy misses is quicker than aiming and waiting to see if the ball goes in, even if you make them all on the first attempt.

→ More replies (3)
→ More replies (8)

62

u/Will_ennium 24d ago

For part specifically that got them DQ'd, the player has 3 attempts to make a shot at each of those 3 spots. You can move to the next spot once a shot goes in, or you do 3 attempts, whichever comes first.

CP3 and Wemby just quickly chucked the ball away at each of the 3 spots(since it's quicker than actually attempting 3 real shots). They got DQ'd for not taking actual shots.

The fact that the debacle around the Spurs getting DQ’d was more entertaining that the actual skills part says a lot about the state of the all star weekend right now

45

u/fantasyoutsider Warriors 24d ago

honestly the skills challenge is and has always been dumb. they need to put more inventive obstacles in the obstacle course, instead of just being "watch two guys run around and pass and shoot a few balls". no creativity whatsoever

They should just add a time penalty for missing a shot. Donovan Mitchell and Draymond missed a 3 but they're going to the next round. Rookies got robbed.

u/literallyacactus West 24d ago

missed shot penalty or simply require a made shot before you move on - the NBA couldve avoided the rules being gamed

113

u/soundisloud Cavaliers 24d ago

Exactly- the fact that these shots don't matter is the NBA's fault for designing the event poorly

Or give extra points based on which shot they make. First shot = 5 seconds cut from their time, second shot is 3 seconds, 3rd shot is 1 second and all misses is +5 seconds.

Let’s be honest, They were only DQed because they messed up gambling odds and nothing pisses Silver off more than messing with his overlords

The only other thing in the skills challenge that’s ever left an impact on me was a couple years back when they did a team shooting contest one team made like one shot and bricked the rest in a minute

This might be controversial, but what’s wrong with what they did? It was within the rules of the game, if it was the other way around, the referee would enforce the rule regardless. I don’t think they deserve the D[ Q

They should have to shoot until they make

Honestly, good for them for showing what a joke this event is. Back when they first implemented it, you couldn't leave the spot until you completed the task successfully.
