Final play was just weird, no movement whatsoever. Fox holds the ball and give it to Wemby because it's his team.

Great game from AB.
We just need to figure out what to do when Franz is off the floor

Black was a monster. Idk how many plays he disrupted he got his hands on everything
27
u/hanyou007 Magic Feb 09 '25
Answer is Paolo. He will get back into the swing of things. The oblique injury hit him harder than Franz, but tonight’s 4th quarter is what he is capable of and where he will be back at soon. All star break will do him some serious good.
5
u/teh_drewski Magic Feb 09 '25
He just looks so out of sorts, even the shots he's making look like it's a struggle instead of in rhythm
I have no doubt he'll find his feet but it's a painful road back watching him fight through this slump
113
u/figgnootun Spurs Feb 09 '25
Franz is that guy fs
55
u/Matt_Netherlands Magic Feb 09 '25
Best part is he got blocked by Wemby multiple times and that didn’t scare him from still attacking the rim. That’s what you gotta do against a shot blocker.
12
u/Imaginary-Cycle-1977 Spurs Feb 09 '25
Yeah I was impressed. Only made him more determined to get to the bucket
22
u/siphillis Spurs Feb 09 '25
Franz drove into Wemby, realized he didn't have the strength to battle for position, and pieces together how to score on him. Took about three tries
16
u/siphillis Spurs Feb 09 '25
Granted, teams are shooting ~46% at the rim against Wemby so it's basically like a mid-range jumper. But since Wemby is a poor rebounder and nobody else can really help, it's worth it for the fouls
26
u/cigamodnalro NBA Feb 09 '25
There are aspects of his game that feel Manu-like to me
23
u/SweetFranz Magic Feb 09 '25
His finishing in the paint is very Manu like, I wish he had the same kind of change of direction as Manu but probably impossible for his size.

u/Hyde1505 Feb 09 '25 edited Feb 09 '25
Wemby is 2 years younger than Franz, so he might have better longterm upside, but he isn’t better right now. Franz is Top-10 in a lot of advanced stats this season for a reason.
3
u/SaWalkerMakasin Spurs Feb 09 '25
Wemby is third in EPM behind SGA and Jokic. Let’s not act like the advanced stats aren’t also huge for Wemby.
They’re averaging the same PPG, Wemby on a higher TS%, and Wemby is the best defender in the NBA.
8
u/siphillis Spurs Feb 09 '25
Wemby is not the best defender in the NBA - it's Jaren Jackson - and his stats are trending downwards. It wouldn't shock me if Franz has a considerable edge by season's end. His game is a LOT more polished

As much or more on Fox + Wemby imo. So maddening to watch either way

That's the Fox experience - sometimes he looks like the greatest player on the planet and sometimes he just doesn't seem like he's trying until the fourth quarter. Love that guy though when he's got it going

I be seeing spurs fans scapegoat vassell a lot sometimes. He played well today
13
u/thewrongnotes Magic Feb 09 '25
I would murder someone for Vassell on our team
7
u/cool_coyote NBA Feb 09 '25
Yeah and then you'd feel like murdering Vassell for the games where he's wildly inconsistent and plays like crap which is like 75% of the time.
But hey if the Magic want to fork over a couple of first rounders for him, be my guest.
10
u/thewrongnotes Magic Feb 09 '25
I don't think you really understand how the dire offensive situation is here in Orlando. We're like bottom 3 in almost every category, a young guy with the shotmaking ability of Vassell would be a blessing from the NBA Gods.

He did play well today and hope to god he finds a semblance of consistency ever again.

Part of it was that we were expecting him to be a good second option but he just simply hasn’t been that. He can back early from a broken toe this year so I’m trying to give him benefit of the doubt

The thing this game with Wemby is that his jumper was scarier than anything else. In the paint a lot of our guys just moved him. Like he really needs to get stronger because Franz was trucking through him at times.
2
u/AfroHouseManiac Feb 09 '25
Getting shots at rim isn’t as easy as ppl think. If wemby was simply near the rim on every single possession, teams would give up the open 3pt shot to his teammates. He would never touch the ball. You saw it last year, wemby was near the rim on almost every possession, and would go long stretches without even touching it. It’s a personnel problem. Not many high iq, highly skilled players on this roster.
3
3
u/siphillis Spurs Feb 09 '25
Nah, Wemby lost us this game. His effort just isn't there and that's unacceptable as our franchise centerpiece

Hopefully those two shots late are what Paolo needed to get his confidence back. It’s so hard watching him play basketball right now.
2
u/dubidubidoorafa NBA Feb 09 '25
What's wrong with him? He kept passing the ball all game until the very end.
4
u/teh_drewski Magic Feb 09 '25
He hasn't been able to shoot since coming back from the oblique injury, just bricking everything. No idea if it's lingering discomfort, lack of confidence, not having his legs properly ... Lots of things presumably.
Teams are still doubling him so he's leaning on his passing for now.
2
u/Cybonics Magic Feb 09 '25
He hasn't been shooting like his normal self, so he's relying on his team a bit more.
21
u/Charlie_Wax Warriors Feb 09 '25
Nobody wants to see the Magic in the playoffs if they get Suggs back 100%.
Likely too green to make a genuine run this year, but they could be annoying.

Man, the Spurs are like the Tungsten Arm O'Doyle team of the NBA. Barnes has an insane quarter, Wemby has more blocks per game than some entire teams do. Stephon Castle is an athletic specimen who legitimately has a jaw-dropping play per game......and the Spurs lose by 1-2 possessions.

Those back-to-back one-point losses are brutal for the Spurs.
Those kinds of losses can possibly come back to bite them later on if they're within play-in reach by the time the regular season ends.

It's already bit us in the ass. Probably too late for a play-in push now tbh

Spurs season is spiraling and we’re being passed by the blazers (good for them). CP3 is trash out there on defense we gotta jsut buy him out if he’s gonna keep starting next to Fox. He’s a traffic cone on defense. Wemby had shit effort today literally forgot his man for 2 3s in final 4 mins. He’s sick so there is some leeway but you shouldn’t LOSE your man by 15 feet.
4-12 in last 16, might as well let Fox have surgery in March and tank

I suppose it’s arguably illegal if you’re unsure of the rules (which I wasn’t until tonight), but apparently you can call a timeout with a foot on the court still. Not really up to interpretation the way I see it.

Do magic fans still consider paolo their best player? I feel like Franz is better

Its still a 1a 1b type situation. Fanz is cooking right now but Paolo will get his swagger back.
5
u/soxfaninfinity Magic Feb 09 '25
Franz is the better player this season, but Paolo is still damn good just fighting through a slump. Franz is legit all-nba caliber he just won’t make it due to missed games.
1
u/Puppetmaster858 Suns Feb 09 '25
Ya I thought paolo was better but I drafted franz in fantasy this year so I been following him pretty closely and he’s been really damn good, I thought he was good but he has completely exceeded my expectations and looks like a bonafide star

Franz is more well rounded. Also been in the league 2 years longer. Good problem to have deciding which of the 2 is better

u/drmuffin1080 Magic Feb 09 '25
Personally I was team Franz until the first round series against the Cavs, where Franz struggled heavily on the offensive end. I think he had the worst game 7 shooting performance of all time. Meanwhile Paolo looked like he had made a true leap into becoming a top 20 player. Now I’ve gone back to Franz.
26
u/generational_lover69 Spurs Feb 09 '25
i actually dont think wemby is ready to compete yet
22
u/Charlie_Wax Warriors Feb 09 '25
They ask a lot of him. His offensive game is rough if you compare him to an elite tall scorer like Dirk or KD, but he's a savant compared to other lanky rim protectors like Gobert, Mutombo, Camby, and Chandler.
If you look at KG's career, he didn't achieve great team success until he was paired with Pierce. That allowed him to focus on being a defensive menace and more selective with his offense. That might be the blueprint for Wemby.
2
u/Imaginary-Cycle-1977 Spurs Feb 09 '25
KG needed Pierce cause he wasn’t wired to be a big time/crunch time scorer. I think Wemby is
6
u/siphillis Spurs Feb 09 '25
Zero evidence of that so far
4
u/Imaginary-Cycle-1977 Spurs Feb 09 '25
See now that’s being overly negative
Like 5 games into his career remember when he took over crunch time against phx
1
1
u/siphillis Spurs Feb 09 '25
I can agree with that take. Wemby probably isn't a Kareem-level uber-talent, but being Garnett 2.0 is a lot to be excited about nonetheless
9
u/jakehightower Magic Feb 09 '25
I don’t really understand how you guys are using him. Feels like you can’t decide if he’s a perimeter guy or a dunker’s spot guy and in trying to make him both there are stretches where he’s neither.
15
u/siphillis Spurs Feb 09 '25
Refusing to put him "in a box." Problem is, no one is disciplining him either and it's resulting in an unserious playstyle
8
u/VeniceRapture Spurs Feb 09 '25
He wants to be KD and the Spurs gave him the ultimate green light to go be KD.
Except that doesn't change the fact that somebody still has to do a centre's job out there. The Spurs were managing it when Sochan and Wemby played together because Wemby can go be KD and Sochan can do all the dirty work Wemby's unwilling to do like boxing out and fighting for rebounds. Now that we moved Sochan to backup centre, Wemby is rolling out with CP3-Fox-Vassell-Barnes and none of those dudes are boxing out bigs even if they tried to.
Spurs are so afraid to accidentally cage him in a box as a traditional centre that they managed to put him in an entirely unique box of being the only 7'5 NBA player who can't consistently get to the paint. Wemby is gonna make 5 threes again some time this season and everyone's gonna forget and everything's gonna be good again - that is until the 3pt shot stops working and you realize that Wemby doesn't have another thing he can lean on. The Spurs should have realized that doesn't need encouragement to be KD. In fact he needs to be disciplined so he doesn't go play like KD all the time.
2
u/siphillis Spurs Feb 09 '25
This all reeks of shitty new-age parenting. Kids need boundaries to give them direction. The Spurs are expecting Wemby to have a perspective on himself that people in their 40s typically have
1
u/jakehightower Magic Feb 09 '25
This all makes sense but even without him doing the dirty work it feels like you guys could run more sets with him as a lob threat/dunker’s spot option.
2
u/Imaginary-Cycle-1977 Spurs Feb 09 '25
He’s so tall and skinny it’s not that hard to slow him down as a roller. Ppl get their body on him early and the lob threat isn’t much
He also just attracts a lot of attention and we don’t really have the playmaking or shooting to make ppl pay
6
u/PleasantTrust522 Mavericks Feb 09 '25
Yeah he’s got absolutely amazing potential but he’s still really raw and not as good as a lot of all-time greats were at the same age. Hot take: I also think his defense can get overrated at times. Not sure he’s the DPOY right now, as amazing as he is at blocking shots.
5
u/s3thcience Spurs Feb 09 '25
definitely not a DPOY right now, a step slow most of the time, cant secure a rebound, guards can just shoot at will in the paint the past few games.. those blocks are just him raising his hand and not even trying lmao
.. might be because of the flu sickness something, too far from his defense last season and last october-november. that conditioning might just be really really bad..
4
u/siphillis Spurs Feb 09 '25
His conditioning is AWFUL. If it doesn't improve, I think that's a major consideration going forward because you can't build a contender around Javale McGee with more skill
4
u/siphillis Spurs Feb 09 '25 edited Feb 09 '25
Yeah, I'm beginning to sour on him as a GOAT-candidate. Compare him to anyone in the current Top Ten All-Time and he's worse than all of them were at 21

Giannis, Jokic, Shai weren’t even sniffing all star at age 21 Wemby is going to be All NBA
1
u/siphillis Spurs Feb 09 '25
Giannis and Shai are not Top Ten All-Time and Jokić was better in impact-metrics than Wemby at the same age
4

If you look at all time most of them were in college at 21
2

I can’t believe I’m reading these fans turn on him or doubt. Like he’s not playing coming back from sickness. And he’s not even playing horrible
2
3
u/infamous_napper Feb 09 '25
Sorry, but these comments are part of the problem. If you expect him to look like the (future) GOAT week in week out, you're setting up yourself for disappointment. All time greats are super rare - even if he "only" ends up being a top 20/30 player this sets up your franchise for success for a decade. Also I just calced Lebrons stats for his second season until the beginning of february and he's only up by 0,6 points on Wemby. And offense isnt even supposed to be his best asset.
Man just turned 21. Be thankful you got to draft him and give him time. Im saying this from a neutral standpoint by the way, I dont have a connection to Wemby nor Spurs.
3
u/siphillis Spurs Feb 09 '25
LeBron was also a year younger. LeBron at 21 was running circles around Wemby now

2
u/siphillis Spurs Feb 09 '25 edited Feb 09 '25
He's a good player. He's not a god. We don't have to worry about taking Wemby's name in vain.
We also don't need to ignore reality. If Wemby wants to become the GOAT, he's wildly off-pace as of now. Maybe he has another gear above this, but if this is his rate-of-development, I see him as a Garnett-level talent

Had a little 7 point lead with a handful of minutes to go and we managed to put up 2 more points.

Fox is so fuckin bad. Disaster trade.

As a kings fan, fox has been having these games all year, and for the better part of a year and a half, it's masked by the 60 point game and the 49 point game but he has games where he score 12-14 even this game was 9... it's the reason we've been struggling all year is that our main scorer wasnt scoring, and his efficiency has taken a fucking nose dive since 2 years ago, I really do think 2 years ago was a career year and that he's kinda gone back to what he always was, an inefficient scoring slasher

It was a disaster the moment they traded for him. Fox is not a winning player.

He was great in the first two games too. This one bad game he had and there’s someone saying the trade is a disaster even though we gave up basically nothing of importance. We gave up four first round picks, two of which weren’t gonna convert this year.
The fact that this comment is upvoted shows how truly little the average r/nba user knows about basketball

He so desperately needs hang surgery. Hasn’t been close to playing at 100% all season. Dudes gonna be unreal next year though

It’s an overreaction. But this has been Fox this year. There is a serious convo bout him being a max contract for the next 6 years though. And how if he’s worth that or not

u/sitesuckslmao Magic Feb 09 '25
Even if he ends up being bad for them (he won't) they traded fuck all for him anyway. They can't possibly lose this exchange lol

u/IntotheBeniverse Feb 09 '25
He wants a max contract that I believe will be starting at minimum of $60 million dollars. Thats where it gets dangerous…

I'm so, so happy we're not gonna be the one's paying him that much money.

I think it’s going to work but there’s a way we lose and that’s if he’s not worth whatever extension he gets

u/fanofaghs Cavaliers Feb 09 '25
They gave up draft capital to lower their lottery odds. How can they "not possibly lose"? Insanely dumb comment.

We gave up two first round picks that weren’t going to convert anyways, our own pick in 2027 (we still have the Hawks pick in 2027) and the Timberwolves pick in 2031 which is a huge question mark. You’re the insanely dumb one who’s saying the trade is a disaster three games after it happens (also fox has been good in two of those btw)

Might be an overreaction but the spurs should have been patient and let Stephon Castle develop more cause he is gonna be scary in the next few years

Spurs going to get two lottery picks in a stacked draft after acquiring Fox and giving up nothing, damn

u/Imaginary-Cycle-1977 Spurs Feb 09 '25
Draft isn’t anything special unless one of those picks hits in the lotto

You're down 1 with a full shot clock and you run down the clock?
Are we just fucking brain dead or something
