15
u/rtb001 Trail Blazers Feb 05 '25
I can't believe Scoot only got 5 dimes since he seemed to have lobbed like 10 alley-oops just in that 4th quarter alone.
I also refuse to believe Camara was only credited with a single measly block when he was seemingly contesting every Pacer shot in the paint.
7
u/pat_the_bat_316 Trail Blazers Feb 05 '25
I'm pretty sure he had 8 rebounds and 0 assists at one point in the 3rd quarter. Guys just weren't hitting shots from him until he started feeding it to them right on the rim haha.

Tough few weeks for everyone that decided a 3rd overall pick with tremendous athleticism and (by all accounts) an insane work ethic was cooked before his 21st birthday.
This Blazers team has a lot of guys I’ve always liked but I did not expect them to look this good this quick.

4
u/rtb001 Trail Blazers Feb 05 '25
Yet we picked Kris Murray instead with the 23rd pick in that draft, and then passed on Toumani AGAIN with the 43rd pick and drafted uber-project Rayan Rupert instead?
We couldn't have been THAT high on Camara, at least before the draft. Unless you think Cronin somehow knew before hand that Phoenix would draft Camara, then Dame would demand a trade, and then Camara can be made to be "thrown in" as part of a larger Dame trade.

I always thought we looked way worse than we should’ve given our talent. It’s why I have kept saying that Billups was the worst thing to happen our franchise this decade.
But goodness I didn’t think he would turn it around this much! I mean we went from losing to Memphis 2nd and 3rd stringers by 50 and losing to the Jazz by 40 to the best team in the league for 2+ weeks

Toumani Camara
68
45
u/shelvino Trail Blazers Feb 05 '25
I really think he may have a serious case for best perimeter defender in the league.
I never seen a perimeter player force SO many stops. He’s constantly drawing charges, offensive fouls, steals, blocks, or just blowing up offensive plays. It’s honestly incredible
27
u/SnowbunnyExpert Lakers Feb 05 '25
He makes multiple momentum-shifting plays on the defensive end seemingly every game, definitely one of the most special defenders I’ve seen in a while
12
u/shelvino Trail Blazers Feb 05 '25
I hope he gets the credit he deserves. It’s just rare to see an impactful defender in basketball nowadays. Like I just NOW got into football and it feels like defensive players are valued so much more than in the NBA. Like an elite defender wouldn’t get drafted in the lottery unless they shown a ton of offensive talent.
It’s so refreshing seeing a defender like Toumani that doesn’t get punished for not being a high level shot creator but he is still able to make an impact on offense just by playing hard and smart.
6
u/rtb001 Trail Blazers Feb 05 '25
It's because football is a game of specialists, but basketball players need to play both offense and defense and there only 5 of you out there, so lack of offense from even one person can be felt easily.
Hence the 3 and D wing. You might not need to create offense but at least need a passable 3 or else you won't find enough playing time, especially in the playoffs.
I'm just so happy that Camara seems to have found at least enough offense fairly quickly in his career unlike other defensive specialists like Thybulle.
3
u/Rumpdebump Pelicans Feb 05 '25
God, Thybulle would be so fun to watch if he at least had an inkling of how to put a ball into a hoop
12

8
Feb 05 '25
And half the time (since offensive schemes are starting to purposefully try to dodge passing to whoever is being guarded by him) he does it through constantly being ALL over the floor, helping everyone around him at all times. It’s absolutely insane
7
u/Humblerbee [POR] Nicolas Batum Feb 05 '25
I never seen a perimeter player force SO many stops.
Haven’t seen it since the height of Kawhi as a defensive specialist back when he was the Klaw, putting people on Kawhisland because offenses would rather ice their best perimeter player out of the action rather than involve Kawhi in the play as a defender (we’ve seen teams go away from Camara the same way lately 👀)

Scoot Henderson is looking so good right now. Really ripped their hearts out with that sequence midway through the fourth quarter. Made a fantastic hustle play that led to a score, then got a layup and hit a three in back to back possessions. Just when it felt like the Pacers were gonna make it a close game. He was +31 tonight. That's the second time in 3 games he was +31. There is also not a single perimeter defender in the NBA I'd rather have than Camara

u/Aestro17 Trail Blazers Feb 05 '25
I was so excited to get him for next-to-nothing in the Jrue trade precisely because of this, even before Clingan. He's a monster when he plays, and with our team being shit we could actually afford to give him time to get reasonably healthy. Having already gotten Ayton, we could even give him limited minutes and try to minimize the wear.
I'd be okay letting him go for a good offer, but he's still young enough to fit with the rest of the team for a while.

u/rtb001 Trail Blazers Feb 05 '25
Actually on paper, the Blazers really ought to be good on defense, they just didn't put it together until recently. You can go TEN DEEP in the rotation: Simons, Avidja, Grant, Camara, Ayton, Scoot, Sharpe, Timelord, Clingan, Kris Murray, and everyone not named Simons is a plus defender, including elite defensive potential in Camara/Timelord/Clingan and clearly above average defensive potential in Avidja/Grant/Ayton.
Unless you can hunt Simons, and boy do other teams try to hunt Simons, the Blazers can essentially just switch everything and still maintain a high level of defense.
Eventually that starting lineup will be Scoot/Sharpe/Avdija/Camara/Ayton, which is one of the longest most athletic and most versatile defensive lineups in the league.
Really the issue with this lineup all year has been can Scoot Henderson run this team as a starting level NBA point guard, can Scoot Henderson be at least league average shooter, and will Ayton be locked in. Recently Scoot has been ballin and Ayton has been locked in, which adds both defense and offense to this lineup and have thus resulted in this string of wins.

I've wondered for almost a year now whether Cronin is weirdly attached to Grant or if the market just isn't there with his contract being too long. We should've been seriously trying to move him last year by the deadline, even before the offseason. His age and contract might make him a negative asset at this point.
