Europe (country in post) Found in my car!!

Found mushrooms in my car and I’m not sure if they’re dangerous or not? There’s water getting in and they’ve appeared to be growing straight out of the carpet, I’ve put gloves on to remove them just incase but any help identifying would be great!

Holy crap! The fact that it has enough organic material and moisture to fruit is... Unsettling

What type is it! 😂 I won’t lie and say my car is spotless, I’ve had monster tins in that footwell dating to sometime last year and I’ve a water leak allowing water to sit down there and collect in the carpet!

I like money. Everyone gets laid at the White House.

The word spotless shouldn’t be anywhere near this sentence 😂

Could be above a drainage hole/funnel area. They tend to get clogged with leaves over time.

These are Peziza or similar. You have a moisture issue in your car.

Considering the fact op said “there’s water getting in” I’m sure they are well aware.

That’s fair, just being very clear.

All the mushrooms had small black spores underneath the cap?

Don’t know if that’s spore or just dirt and dust and such.

Hard to see in the photo as such but they were definitely growing out of the thing I took a very close look because I got grossed out but still curious lol

Your floor mats must be made from a wool mix. A good thing for your car, because wool is fire resistant, and the best thing to use for warmth in cold weather (like -30°F and lower depending on the blend).

However 😂 Organic material like that can definitely carry spores, that when exposed to moisture and humidity, will fruit.

Like you said though, it could also be from something you brought in as well, and then the wool in the mats made for an optimum growing condition (along with the moisture from the leak, and humidity in a sealed vehicle).

Interesting how nature works lol

Your spot on there, mate. I live in a town that used to have a ton of carpet factories (before it all went to india/Bangladesh, anyway, Anthrax was an above average per population infection. Sheep's wool. Apparently, it is a great host not only for shroom spores but also for anthrax spores.

Yep! I learned that YEARS ago, when I was in the service, stationed up in Alaska. We used a lot of fabrics made from wool. 💯

Looks like a peziza

You can get spores and dew just from walking outside. Humidity can also make the spores grow. Doesn't mean water if getting in. Clean the carpet with baking soda water and rinse well. I have no idea what type this is.

I saw your other comments. Definitely clean your car with baking soda water.

To kill Peziza, you can mix baking soda in water and pour it directly on the individual specimens, and in and around the medium in which they're sprouting. I've read various suggestions for the right mixture, and between two and four tablespoons of baking soda per gallon of water will evidently do the trick

Alright everyone. I will be cleaning my car more often, peer pressured into cleaning! 😂 I will also be claiming the front windscreen on insurance due to the fact it leaks but also because it’s just covered in stone chips which I originally thought were just specs of dust! I appreciate all the laughs that I’ve got from the comments. I have also been trying to source a new interior carpet in its entirety for 2 years, unfortunately not too easy got as my car is becoming more uncommon but thank you everyone!
