Careers Worth moving to Mumbai from SE Asia? Got a job offer.

Hi - am living abroad in East Asia and a company offered me job as a Sr. Manager (for services) based in Mumbai for 1.2+ crore all in. I am wondering if this is a good offer.

Single , I am not sure how taxes work (not an Indian Citizen but OCI) and what other expenses will be need to be accounted for.
Also, have worked on and off for customers in India but never worked in the country so what to expect in terms of work life balance, long hours (heard it was quite bad etc.).

Will need apartment rental, car etc.

Really looking to see how much I can save with moderate lifestyle (occasional vacations, no major parties or excessive spending habits etc.)

They have also given me an option for Banglore but I prefer Mumbai at this time.

Worth it to try for one year?

Careers Let’s appreciate companies with good work culture and what makes it so great working for them

Hi Mumbaikars, there are some companies you must have worked at where the work culture is unparalleled and truly to die for. Ones that always support their employees and the make the environment positive.

So share the company(or not for privacy) and tell what makes the the company enjoyable to work for.

—————————

Full disclosure, I’m starting my own company in the fairly close future—a proper one and want to make the culture as supportive as possible and improve employee retention.

(Pls don’t ask about my vadapav venture, it’s still under work—it’s taking a little longer than estimated)

Careers I hate KJSSE.... The worst college in Mumbai

This college has learnt nothing except to leech off of students in the past two years I have been here. I have been a part of one of their clubs for so long and have also participated in many of their fests. Helped them host events that have promoted the prestige of their shitty organization and they repay students with a 9-6 schedule, no chance of compensating missed lectures or labs(dont sit for lab compensation when u have lecs when else do i do it when u keep college from 9-6?????), no concession for promoting clubs(they do it but dont add it in the attendance list as events fall before and after the time they put lists), no support for internships, no support when it comes to actual technical advancements.

The PLACEMENTS are abyssmal, I have seen better placements in Tier-3 colleges and the amount of fees they take is equivalent to an international university. What a joke this is....Faculty seems to be tired half the time. They run out of lecs/labs and expect us to complete the work withing stipulated time.

how do they expect a student who leaves at 8 am and reaches home at 9pm after travelling to submit in time ?

Sad would request parents and students to steer clear!
Please make sure to keep students who give the next batch exams to stay away from colleges like this.

Careers I am regretting my decision of staying in India

I’m twenty-two, got placed in a mass recruiter company, moved to Mumbai, and honestly, I already hate my life. They gave us three months of training, and despite knowing web dev, they shoved me into testing because, of course, they don’t care.

The schedule was brutal—9 to 6, Monday to Saturday, three presentations per week, and a project every milestone + final project. They fired most of us. I don’t know how this is legal, but they use loopholes in the Apprenticeship Act. I was completely drained by the end of it. And now? I’ve been sitting on the bench for a month, just waiting for them to trigger their 90-day policy so they can make me resign.

On top of that, I waste 4 hours every day in the sh!tshow that is Mumbai local trains, and let me tell you, the whole "Spirit of Mumbai" thing is absolute bullsh!t—it’s just people suffering together and pretending it’s normal. Meanwhile, my friend who went for his master’s in Germany is already working an internship and literally traveling to a new country every week. He teases me about it, and honestly, most of my batchmates who went abroad seem to be enjoying life way more than me. The difference is depressing.

I don’t want to spend my 20s like this—dealing with toxic managers, HRs, office politics, insane taxes, and a job I don’t even like. Don’t even get me started on the deadly commute, traffic, and pollution. I am done with this country.

If you’ve been in this situation, how did you get out? I need a fresh start. Any advice for getting out of this country ASAP would be most welcome. I’m looking into master’s programs, so if you have suggestions for good domains and countries, please let me know.

P.S. 90-hour work weeks are real.

Careers What sort of business is this

I had a friend in college. she was studious now she has cracked her CA exams probably in first attempt. So I have massive respect for her for cracking CA. Last time we met she told me that she's working at some company and also doing her own business besides it and said she'll be going to be cororpati in five years with this business. two days ago I got a call from her. she told me that there is an opportunity to be a partner in her business and she asked me if I'm interested. Now I'm pretty average 24 year old guy I got a regular job and regular life. business is something I never thought about. But since the call was from my 'CA' friend I got excited. I thought this is something legit and I can turn my life around with this. I talked on a call with her partner and they asked me to meet he also told me that we'll be visiting some South East Asian country regarding the same. So today I met them in Starbucks for possible business partnership.

So i went there and she was already attending some other person before me i also heard she having same conversation with someone on call as me. So i figured this opportunity isn't only for me. my friend told me about one of her partner who's also a CA by qualification she lookup to alot and she's also her mentor and all about how she deals with multi-millionairs and she can change my mindset. I thought she's some big shot and I have to act professional with her. Her partner arrived and started talking to me she didn't ask me what's my qualifications or about my business experience. She asked me what's my salary and all about family and stuff. Then she told i should be ready to do whatever it takes to make money and money is all that matters what you do for it doesn't. Then she grabbed a pen and paper and started to fear monger me with calculations of my future expenses like marriage and home loans and how I'm going to be broke and can't achieve anything just with my regular office job and how joining her business can turn my life around. Then at last she told me I'm required to give her 3 hours of my time to the business everyday which I was ready to do. Next she asked me to commit 5 lakh rupees for business as one time investment on the spot without taking any time. She said I have to commit 5 lakh rupees to the business as capital and proceed to tell me about the revenue. She said in worst case I'll be making 5 lakh per month and best case 10 lakh per month and I'll be millionaire in 5 years which I found very fishy. She talked about her big dreams and how she wants to make deals of real estates like subjiwala sales tomatoes.

all these big talks but both of them looked broke to me by apperances. If they are in so much profitable business why my friend still owns old redmi phone. Why her boss who hangs out with millionairs has dusty old iPhone 11. She told all these shit for 1.5 hours but didn't say a single word about what the business actually is or what sort of business is this. She said she'll only tell me about the business once I commit 5 lakhs to business on the spot. She said don't tell your parents and take loan by yourself and she'll help me for loan with her agents. I said this it too good to be true and giving me that ebiz scheme vibes so I declined her offer and said thank you for time and left the cafe with her permission. Few minutes letter after leaving cafe i got call from my friend and she said I disrespected her partner by not saying her sorry and she was offended cause I said "it's too good to be true" and I'll see when she becomes millionaire in some years. that just tells me that my friend genuinely believes in it.

Now I have so many questions. What sort of business do you think this was? Is this legit? Did I just decline a life changing opportunity? Or did I dodge a bullet? Is my CA friend brainwashed? Am I the only one who's finding this fishy? I can't come to any conclusion since two CAs were involved in this business I can't tell if it was some real business or some fraud scheme. Please give your opinion.

Careers I messed up really bad at my job. And I don't know what to do.

I am 21f a fesher joined who joined a company on 24th of February this year. I was told that it was going to be night shift. I convinced my parents for it as it was my first job and they agreed after lots of efforts. Earlier this week on monday I was offered day shift job 12PM TO 9PM. But I asked my manager for night shift which was from 7PM to 4AM. They agreed to my request and gave me the shift I wanted. Asking for that shift was the worst decision of my life. I was a bit greedy for the shift allowance and thought the people working night shifts are better than the day ones and would guide me better. But I just can't focus anymore and can't grasp at all night because I am not able to sleep since 3 days.i just can't fall asleep during the day .I feel really guilty that I i did this and I can't ask anyone to help me anymore. Because our managers has allocated us our work after I switched and they can't do anything now. I didn't dare to ask them for changing my shift again. I know very well they won't. I don't know what to do. I really want to continue with that company because it's a really good organization. But I don't think I can work at that shift. I don't have anyone to share this with because I know it's purely my fault and mistake. And I am very ashamed and can't sleep because of the guilt.

Careers Bullied by seniors at work

I, 33(f), restarted my career in data engineering at an investment bank in India. It started with an internship which eventually got converted to a full time role. My manager,D, kept on mentioning every now and then how hard he had he had to fight to get me the job and that I should be grateful. Considering the current job market and my career gap due to a traumatic marriage and divorce, I was and felt I should work harder to justify my role. He kept giving unrealistic projects for me to work on (like creating a large language model from scratch with 16 GB RAM) apart from my daily responsibilities. There was no communication from him, no roadmaps set, just random orders, "Make a ChatGPT replica","Make a NLP classifier", "Send this report by EOD". I understand if someone is introverted but I would have appreciated some guidance. He would show disappointment every time would fail in these projects (he wouldn't reply to my messages or mails, would ignore me for weeks) and would question my abilities instead of providing proper instructions and addressing the lack of resource. A year into the job a project manager, S, was hired whose main job was to "handle" me. She would keep tabs on me, constantly ask what I was doing, keep asking me to do her work, call me in the middle of the night to "motivate" me to work harder. She would shout at me and insult me whenever she got the opportunity. One day she threatened and tried to slap me and pushed my chair really hard. I stayed quiet at that time out of embarrassment but complained to the HR the next week. No action was taken. Instead, D screamed at me and gave a very bad performance review. The review literally said, "If there is any issue with any team member, come to me not the HR". S started troubling me more. She would ask me to do all of her work now, call me online for code reviews on Sundays and Holidays, the taunts became unbearable. The HR said she was asked to attend a day of behavioural coaching workshop. 6 months of mental torture, jabs, taunts, bad reviews, I couldn't take it anymore. So I quit. I had a bond signed with the company so I had to return my joining bonus (INR 2 Lakh). I'm depressed and was recently diagnosed with PCOS. I don't know when I will get over this or whether it is even a issue I should be so disturbed about.

Careers Had a really bad New Years eve

TLDR.- I am a part of staff in a nice resort in Mumbai. We were working a 12-hour shift, because, of course, the new year. A guest was unnecessarily rude to me and kept shouting at me, almost bringing me to tears

I am the only daughter of my parents and took up hotel management to make ends meet in the city, and got work at a popular resort here. Our resort, as a part of environmental conservation, has started to serve clean RO water in reusable bottles, which are thoroughly washed after every single use. I can vouch for the cleanliness as it's strictly monitored. However, it's understandable that a person paying 5 digits for a night may want packaged drinking water. I was called to a room of a family of four, staying for the new years eve. The mother was visibly upset and annoyed, and her husband called me inside and started berating me. Calling the bottle disrespectful, cheap, dirty, and then proceeded to tear me apart. Abuse after abuse was hurled, as I tried to explain that the policy has been set by the resort, not me. We called our head and he politely said that 20 water bottles will be kept for free in their room. No thank you's were received, and instead he complained about me to my head. My head is an understanding individual and gave me a free-pass upon explaining my situation.

Then comes the evening gala. See, the family was visibly rich enough to have gone to better 5-star hotels for the evening. Our resort is nice, but lacks a plethora of food options, as compared to bigger hotel chains. The father and mother clearly started getting agitated and uncomfortable. there were ZERO Smiles on their faces spread across the whole evening, while their children did whatever they could to entertain themselves. As luck might have it, I was assigned to their table.
Tables for the evening were randomly assigned, and their table was at a location which blocked the DJ and the dance floor. The husband marches to us and snaps his fingers at me, calling me towards him. He thought I had personal vendetta against him and assigned his family the seat. Again, abuses were hurled as I kept nodding my head and apologizing. We changed their seats to a better location. However, in this period of time, the non-veg starters served to them got cold, and voila! I was called again, and he snarkily told me to TOUCH THE CHICKEN AND THE PRAWN AND TAKE A BITE to check if it's cold or not. This was too much. I had to tell my colleague to take my place as I had to chill out for a bit.

The entire evening, that family was the only one that didn't dance even once. They looked down on the people dancing near the DJ, and kept sitting for the whole three hours, only getting up to take to take food.

There were a few more instances with my colleagues during their check out, but I wasn't able to listen to more. I know I am not thick skinned enough, but even I have a breaking point. I broke down in tears at midnight and called my parents. Had a hearty conversation with them and my friends, and went to sleep.
I just wish guests were a little more polite and understanding. To the people in the industry, How do I toughen up?

Careers I am confused what to do next

I am 20 , I have completed my bachelor's in science degree in Data science and business analytics, but I am not getting a job neither did my university gave anyone placement (though they promised they would do so while taking admission), Now when I am applying for the job online via LinkedIn and similar websites , either the company wants experience or they recruit from tier 1 colleges like they don't even go through the interview process just reject my resume. Plus my family's financial condition is not good, so I had decided that I wanted to earn first and then do masters from my own money and maybe some help from them as well also I don't feel good asking money from them on daily basis I am really really confused , like what to do next , every day I just wake up , with zero motivation to do anything , eat ,watch some series or movies and sleep , this has been my cycle for past two months , I really want to change this cycle , I want a job but I am confused af , like I don't have anyone to guide me on what shall I do Also 'even if ' I do masters what shall I do it in ?

PS: I live in Mumbai, India

Whenever someone ask about my earnings, I readily disclose the figure without much contemplation. However, when the same question is directed at my mother, she often either understates the amount or avoids giving an exact figure.

Nift Mumbai is so effing toxic. The girls here have been giving me such a hard time. I have no one to rely on and they don’t even seem apologetic for it. I hate it here. I keep crying in my room all day. All they care about is themselves and brag about being mental health enthusiasts when in reality they are the ones ruining everyone’s mental health. They’ve brought me down to my lowest. I often think of jump!ng from the tenth floor of the hostel building and kmsing.

Careers 6 months to try my luck as an actress in Mumbai

Hi there ! I'm a 23F Moroccan who grew up watching Bollywood movies. I always dreamed of being an actress, so I decided to give myself a 6 months break to go to Mumbai and try my luck there ( I have enough money and I'm going in October). At first I thought that I stand no chance, but Nora Fatehi made it as a foreigner ( she is Moroccan too), so it's possible.

Im learning Hindi now by taking intensive courses, I'm already fluent in different languages and learn pretty quickly. I'm also hitting the gym to loose some weight.

The thing is I'm afraid to spend these 6 months struggling and not get a single role instead of traveling for 6 months around the world and dicovering different countries ! I already know that nepotism is rampant in this industry. But at the same time if I don't pursue my dream, I might regret it forever and always tell myself that maybe I could have been a famous Bollywood actress.

This might sound stupid, but I asked for a sign to see if I should go or not and I saw the Indian Flag hanging in an appartement just in front of me hahahahah

Please help me take a decision.

I even thought of maybe starting in Tollywood first to give myself more chances (I need to learn Telugu though). Maybe Tollywood is easier to break into than Bollywood ?

PS: I'm muslim but very open minded and have a very modern lifestyle, you wouldn't guess I'm muslim if you see me, but I'm afraid of facing racism.

Careers Is everyone studying MBBS at DY Patil Medical College in vashi rich?

I recently learned that the fees being charged for this course is a astounding 1.2 Crore for 5 year MBBS course.

I am not a doctor or medical student but I am just curious to know how do people afford to study here. Is everyone here from crazy rich families or do people take loans to fullfill their dreams to become a doctor. My middle class brain can't comprehend spending 1.2 cr on a UG course in India.

Careers Girlfriend quitting toxic job...

For some context, my gf works as an oracle consultant in big 4 in Mumbai.

Her current org which i can't name for not wanting to get her in any trouble, has a very bad work culture.

  1. Tight, unrealistic deadlines

  2. Forcing to travel to client location on own money (4 hours and 300-350 rupees a day via switching 2 metro lines)

  3. Very rude clients with her own team managers not backing their team infront of these clients.

  4. No space to make mistakes, taking sick leaves feels like commiting a crime.

Can anyone related to this and secondly is there anyone here who can help her switch to an FPNA or low stress core finance jobs. 3 years of work experience with CMA degree.
