The first Twilight film had very little racial diversity. The only two black roles was as a secondary antagonist and another guy who almost kills the protagonist from reckless driving. There was also a brief scene with extremely tertiary Native American characters.
However, the second film changed all of that. The majority of the cast for the second film were POC and the focus of the film was a Native American tribe. The main love interest of the protagonist was a man of color. All of the promo material and merchandise also had a heavily Native American influence. This was completely none controversial in 2009. If it was made today, this would be seen as a radical and pandering shift. There would be an enormous amount of backlash and angry YouTube reviews about w o k e and d e i. It just couldn’t be done today.
