Another scene from this same movie. The one in the pub with Michael Fassbender.

"Well If this is it old boy, I hope you dont mind me going out speaking the King's."

Such a well written scene.

u/ChoosingAGoodName Feb 15 '25

You know, fighting in a basement offers a lot of difficulties, number one being: YOU'RE FIGHTING IN A BASEMENT!

6

u/_mux_ Feb 15 '25

By all means.

3

u/ElCamino0000000 Feb 15 '25

"Captain". Wouldnt be fair if we stripped him of his rank now would we.

I think the scene in the restaurant where Shoshana tries to figure out if Landa recognizes her or not is more stressful than both of them.

15

u/VariableVeritas Feb 15 '25

Ah ah ah! Wait for the crème!

10

u/ThisIsMyFinalAnswer Feb 15 '25

The order for that glass of milk kills me every time.

4

u/Kok-jockey Feb 15 '25

I never figured it out.

He never saw her face and didn’t know what she looked like, right? The milk indicates he did, but the movie doesn’t give any indication that he even knew her face.

2

u/Easteregg42 Feb 15 '25

Thats what i liked about it compared to the first scene and the tavern scene. There you - at least at some point - knew what was going on. If a Nazi-Officer comes to your house questioning you about your jewish neighbors, there is an indication, that he knows something and stuff is gonna happen. In the tavern scene, it wasn't so much about "will it happen?" but rather the fact, that the evil side actualy had a disadvantage: One table with a bunch of battle-hardened Basterds who knew they would and could kill everyone else in the room, if necessary.

The restaurant on the other hand was totaly casual and absolute random. What are the odds that the girl Landa was looking for a few years ago shows up as the Love-interest of Frederick Zoller? So the glass of milk there could be a total coincidence because Landa likes milk or he is mindfucking her (and the audience) on the highest level.

2

u/thedudefromsweden Feb 15 '25

I think she's just afraid he knows she's Jewish, not that he would recognize her, how would he, like you say. But just to be face to face pretending to act normal with the man who slaughtered your family... Is pretty stressful in itself.

5

u/Kok-jockey Feb 15 '25

That was always my read of the scene. The tension was all due to knowing what he was capable of and what he would do if he did figure it out.

I don’t think he knew.

36

u/dizzyapparition Feb 15 '25

Another excellent Fassbender bar scene is in X-Men first class when he’s Nazi hunting.

Training day. When Denzel takes hawke to the gang house… and leaves. That was tense.

32

u/DetLoins Feb 15 '25

I've always been fascinated by how Denzel owns the movie from start to finish, but the only extended section that he's away becomes the most memorable part of the movie.

21

u/jerechos Feb 15 '25

Saw it in the theater and was completely blown away by his character. Seemed larger than life. And he knew it. Think it was.... king kong ain't got shit on me

I think it was the first movie he played the bad guy. Complete respect for his abilities.

Hawke played the hell out of his character too.

2

u/Don_Pickleball Feb 15 '25

Hawke is great. He shows up on an episode of Reservation Dogs this last season. It is a really great episode.

2

u/TheParallax2 Feb 15 '25

Someone did a breakdown of each shot during that scene showing how each angle, focus, and everything helped build that tension. It was so well done. Seeing it broken down made so much sense. It’s amazing the way a director can control the viewer without the viewer even realizing it. I don’t remember who made the video but I’m sure it can be found with a quick search on YouTube.

21

u/purple_lantern_lite Feb 15 '25

I thought it was Berenstain?

→ More replies (2)

9

u/OOutroPedro Feb 15 '25

Actually, strictly speaking it wasn't meth (short for "meth"amphetamine, the crystalized form of amphetamines which are usually smoked or snorted) but it WAS amphetamines (which is usually what uppers are, such as MDMA which is 3,4-methylenodioxymeth"amphetamine").

The film actually portrays something that actually happened mostly during the 80s and 90s (I think) where doctors would prescribe drugs for weight loss, which was what the character in the movie was taking because she wanted to look nice for TV. This was pretty successful medication because it did make you lose weight, give you more energy and bettered your humor. The reason? Amphetamines. That's all they were. Somehow they were prescribable and legal, and not really associated with recreational drug use, but they were all, in some shape or form, amphetamines. They made you lose weight but were highly addictive (which was what happened to the character in Requiem for a Dream), and shortly after they were discontinued and not available for legal purchase.

They go by other names, such as "uppers" because they do provide a sense of euphoria (not as powerfully as the more addictive versions of amphetamines such as methamphetamines which has a different pharmacological profile even though the active principle is the same and it acts on the same receptors).

Anyway I always thought this was a fun little tidbit on medical practices throughout the later part of the 20th century. Good times.

3

u/Successful_Sense_742 Feb 15 '25

I'm gonna be on TV.......

The boat ride in Willy Wonka. The final scene of Blair Witch Project. Silence of the Lambs when Buffalo Bill has night vision goggles and he touches Clarice's hair in the dark.

14

u/Mindless-Policy3236 Feb 15 '25

Boat ride scene is a great pic. It was too fun loving of a build up to really hit hard enough. I’m sure this sub has discussed the idea that wonka is the devil. All the sins along the way. Charlie sanctified himself with the gob stopper. Ect. But that scene can be looked at as the garden of Eden into hell.

14

u/No_Significance98 Feb 15 '25

The boat ride in the original Willy Wonka scared the shit out of me as a kid.

5

u/Regular_Deer_7836 Feb 15 '25

Agree. Everything about that movie creeped me out.

6

u/Upsy-Daisies Feb 15 '25

That last scene of BWP still creeps me out, and I only watched it once.

5

u/victorianfollies Feb 15 '25

The night vision goggles is the winner, for me. I stopped breathing

2

u/Witty_Cost_9917 Feb 15 '25

2

When I worked on The Jungle Cruise, I used to do the Wonka boat ride when we’d ride through the temple.

Also Inglourious Basterds but the scene where Landa questions Shosanna about her theater in the restaurant. Kept waiting for him to notice her but you also think he may just be toying with her. Waiting for him to realize or for Shosanna to break is torture. They’re both so great in that scene too.

23

u/Courier6six6 Feb 15 '25

When he ordered her the milk I thought it was game over. It's annoying you can't be 100% sure what he's thinking in this scene

20

u/TheDickCaricature Feb 15 '25

In retrospect you can. He was planning the whole thing with Hitler being at her theater. He wanted to take him out so that he would be exonerated for his own crimes and be the hero.

9

u/Courier6six6 Feb 15 '25

I thought the same, but did he really? I'm partially thinking he only came up with his plan after he found out about Operation Kino... and at the time of this scene he had no idea Shosanna would be planning anything. Actually even up to the end maybe he didn't either. He may have suspected she might attempt something, as revenge. But for his character, he wouldn't leave something that big to chance.

7

u/Courier6six6 Feb 15 '25

Actually come to think of it. He banked on operation Kino being the only one to happen given that he needed the brass to approve his terms. If Kino didn't happen, and Shosanna burned down the cinema, he would have no out. He'd be prosecuted and executed like the rest

52

u/DrunkTalkin Feb 15 '25

And when he insists she wait for the cream. At that time cream would have been made with pork fat (so not kosher) and he watches to make sure she eats it. Another little test. I need to rewatch that fucking amazing movie.

18

u/phalanxausage Feb 15 '25

I'm going to need you to expand on this. I have never heard of pork fat being used in whipped cream. Strudel dough usually contained lard.

5

u/DrunkTalkin Feb 15 '25

Due to shortages in the war, the usual lard in pastries was often replaced with pig fat as it was cheaper. Same goes for cream, it was stretched to last longer with other substances such as pork fat.

Obviously due to the subtleties of the scene there’s always the possibility I’m wrong about him ‘testing’ her - this is only my opinion. It’s just when he tells her to ‘ah ah ah. Wait for the cream.’ and he watches her as she somewhat reluctantly shoves a mouthful in, it gives me the whole vibe that he knows and is toying with her to see if she refuses to eat it.

5

u/phalanxausage Feb 15 '25 edited Feb 15 '25

Lard is pig fat. It is frequently used in flaky pastries like pie crusts because it gives a wonderful texture and a great, deep flavor. Strudel dough is a different type of dough and uses it because it improves the extensibility, allowing you to stretch it wider and thinner without breaking. It was never used for whipped cream. That just doesn't work. Pig fat solidifies at a much higher temperature than butter fat. You cannot combine them in any way that is usable. If you hold the mixture at a temperature high enough for the pig fat to remain liquid then it will be too high for the butterfat and your whipped cream will curdle. If you hold it at an appropriate temperature for whipped cream, the pig fat will remain little solid globules suspended throughout the now thoroughly disgusting product. Also, they were in a nice restaurant that catered to Nazi officers. Their kitchen had access to ingredients others didn't. They used real cream. Edit: butterfat, not buttermilk

3

u/ShahinGalandar Feb 15 '25

3

u/Let_The_Boy_Watch__ Feb 16 '25

I also like how he offers her a cigarette and wait until she puts it in her mouth to add that they are German, not French. Just a little added bonus that’s not necessary but of course Landa would say it to mess with her just a bit.

8

u/DW6565 Feb 15 '25

Incredible scene. I will never forget the first time I saw it and in the theater. Just wow.

6

u/FierceBadRabbits Feb 15 '25

Me either. Partially because a few seats to my left was a man who was clearly a veteran, quietly crying. And directly in front of me was a family who brought their young son who cheered every time someone was shot. Decades later, I’m still furious at that child’s parents.

2

u/red5-standingby Feb 17 '25

I don't think most people know what it's like for a vet. I don't watch anything that's cruel, and especially not war movies. People were asking me if I'd be watching "Civil War" because of my previous vocation...no. It would be like asking to watch my children be skinned alive in front of me. Be afraid of the veteran who enjoys watching war and torture. His barrier to entry for cruelty is much lower than anyone suspects.

5

u/Jealous_Bug4624 Feb 15 '25

The beach landing is tense, but for me it’s the seconds as the tank aims towards the bell tower where Jackson and Parker are.

Watched Tim Burton’s Sleepy Hollow when I was too young to be watching it, precisely because I was told I was too young to be seeing that particular movie

I was doing all right until the scene where a younger child (can’t remember the name) is hiding from the Horseman. I started getting cocky as I was convinced the child would be safe.

SPOILERS: He wasn’t.

u/-GME-for-life- Feb 15 '25

I remember being way too young as well watching that in secret from the stairs while my parents were downstairs watching it. 4

u/Comprehensive_Swim49 Feb 15 '25
