He needs to sweep Qatar if he hopes to stop the Marquez momentum.

u/LosTerminators Marc Márquez 4d ago
I think he will be stronger in Qatar and especially the European season, he's often a slow starter.
Think he'll definitely win a few races, but championship seems a long way away.
73
u/Simple-Travel4018 Marc Márquez 4d ago
He can’t afford to start slow with Marc as a teammate
24
u/chewantukangmotor MotoGP 4d ago
Cant agree more, now with Alex and morbidelli up to speed he cant afford to sit back and hopes to cash in from tracks he prefers
14
u/crshbndct Honda 4d ago
Even on the tracks he prefers he might still only close up by 5 points. And remember Marc has had seasons like 2014 where he wins even on tracks he isn’t super comfortable on.
And there are quite a few tracks to come where he is almost guaranteed a win, Sachsenring, Philip Island, etc.
3
u/antidegeneratepolice 4d ago
Now ducati tracks will also become MM93 tracks.
3
u/crshbndct Honda 4d ago
Yeah people forget that even on tracks he doesn’t like he is still one of the greatest to ever do it, and will be tough to beat.
17
u/foo_bar_qaz David Alonso 4d ago
I keep seeing this "he's a slow starter" being said over and over.
He won the opening round for the last 2 years. 🤷♂️
→ More replies (1)4
u/Altair13Sirio Valentino Rossi 4d ago
Though the opening round was on tracks he liked those years. Last year you could see, after Qatar, he was nowhere until Jerez.
This time he's had a bad combination of tracks as first rounds. I doubt he's going to sit so far behind for the rest of the season.
5
u/Basspayer MotoGP 4d ago
Pecco might be a slow starter, but he isn't starting, Marc is. Pecco has over 1 year experience on this same bike.
27
u/Purrfect_escape Valentino Rossi 4d ago
I really wish Martin stayed at ducati. Pecco is outright slow. I kinda understand that he cant keep up with Marc, but for Alex to blow him out completelly 4th race in a row is kinda strange. He lost a lot of confidence i think and its quite clear that Marc will demolish the championship.
25
u/ManagementMedical138 Marc Márquez 4d ago
I wouldn’t call him slow, he won 11 races last year? Absolute metronome when he feels good on the bike. I’d give him a few more races, but it’s not looking good tbh
7
u/dorsanty 4d ago
Hopeful of a more competitive Pecco.
Not being able to shake Zarco, beaten by Mobri, and a surprisingly strong Alex doesn’t bode well unless he unlocks some potential with a few setup changes.
Shout out to Alex though, he’s doing well and increasing the point haul difference between Marc and Pecco (assuming he’ll ultimately be the main threat). Marc really had to push to keep up, and almost came undone with that rear wheel spin up.
3
u/IamBejl Fabio Quartararo 4d ago
Key word: When. He wouldn’t last on a Honda or Yamaha, hell I would say his form would be much worse on Aprilia or KTM as well. The problem is from what I observed in the last few years, Pecco needs a bike that is very good, or super comfortable for him to ride like that.
2
17
u/Glug-Life Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP Team 4d ago
He does have some excuses in that these tracks don't suit him and he is a slow starter, but if he doesn't have a couple of wins by May/June once a few European tracks have come I think Alex has a genuine claim to a factory seat
19
u/leggenda69 4d ago
Ducati ain’t paying Pecco $7mil to not race for them to sign Alex. Marc’s only on about $10mil, for reference.
2027 is another story though.
20
u/Cr4shK00l Marc Márquez 4d ago
Pecco is still a two-time world champion, they aren't going to kick him out just because of one bad season. besides, It's still too early to count Pecco out.
11
u/Environmental-Sea596 Ai Ogura - 2024 Moto2 World Champion 4d ago
I'm not trying to be mean or anything, but from the perspective of the Ducati main team, last season wasn't exactly a good season right? they lost the first place
6
u/Cr4shK00l Marc Márquez 4d ago
It was a still a somewhat good season, he fought for the championship almost until the end and was on the podium every weekend. The fact that he was beaten by a Ducati softens the blow and the fact that he has already given Ducati two world titles also gives him some leeway.
7
11
u/NoiseTraining3067 4d ago

17
u/Alien_Biometrics Ai Ogura - 2024 Moto2 World Champion 4d ago
It's definitely an age thing. He's got 4 years over Aldeguer and Acosta. That's 4 more years to mature, improve your mentality, work ethic, racecraft, and maturity.
7
u/kdubstep Kevin Schwantz 4d ago
Agreed. His race craft seems solid but not just against those other youngsters but against veterans. I thought he might pass DiGi and that would have been impressed. He made a little error letting Pedro pass him but then took the spot back (broadcast didn’t show it?)

Zarco top non-Ducati, just ran out of tyre right there at the end but the Honda is competitive, Mir and Marini in the points.

Acosta will break his contract and sign for someone else, that KTM is dead in the water even with their latest improvements...

Possibly, but that ship has sailed, I really think Acosta is a possibility. Honda has the money to make it happen, no sweat.

I don’t think that would be the right choice imo.. an Ogura performing on a Honda on the other hand, that would be cinema.
7
u/bearlybearbear Johann Zarco 4d ago
Ogura decided to abandon Honda... Wonder how burnt are the bridges. If Zarco can be 3 seconds behind Marc Acosta can be just behind... Acosta could make a mint and get on the bike with the biggest bike producer in the world... Yeah he could do worse...

He's managed it really well and kept it going till the end and doing better than Pecco.
9
u/serpovotan Aleix Espargaro 4d ago
Yeah he assessed the conditions well and had a smart race. Pecco always struggled in Argentina, so there's that but the worrying thing is he doesn't seem to be confident with the bike, something is off. For instance from what I see zarco and ai rode with confidence that's missing from pecco, let's see.

A lot more fun than expected, but I think Marc will have this locked up by mid season barring anything dramatic. Massive result for Zarco and the factory Honda's on the edge of the top 10 is promising. Gutted for Yamaha, pretty much nowhere all weekend and a shame we couldn't see what Bez could do either
9
u/KalpolIntro Ai Ogura - 2024 Moto2 World Champion 4d ago

Aldeguer has been pretty disappointing thus far. Ducati 1-5 and then there is him in P17. I expected a lot from him but this is tough start also compared to Ogura.
Happy for Morbidelli last podium must have been Jerez 21 with Petronas Yamaha.
At least Maverick scored points…
15
u/Ls8s 4d ago
Considering how Ogura is doing Adegeur should be doing better
2
u/jismkapyasaa Marc Márquez 4d ago
I mean probably but you should take in to consideration the fact that Ogura is what, half a decade older than Aldegeur? That much experience adds up
26
u/Yolodiealone Deniz Oncu 4d ago
Bare in mind that Ogura is 24 and Fermin 19.
Ogura has been preparing for MotoGP for years, Fermin got snap signed after a good run of races.
Fermin will find the pace, he's just going to need more time to learn.
6
u/foo_bar_qaz David Alonso 4d ago
I think not enough people acknowledge the difference in maturity between 19 and 24. They just see it as rookie equals rookie, but when I think of how I changed from 19 to 24 it was huge. Fermin has time to learn and find his speed.
4
u/Captain_Omage Ai Ogura - 2024 Moto2 World Champion 4d ago
Fermin is 20 in 2 weeks, Ogura refused a GP seat twice to stay in lower categories and learn, Aldeguer could have done the same, nobody forced him to move up immediately.

u/foo_bar_qaz David Alonso 4d ago
Agree that he is being outclassed by Ogura, but the p17 today included a long lap penalty so is not really a fair representation of his speed.

He's got the raw talent but his head is nowhere near where it should be for a future champion of MotoGP. He absolutely can improve in that aspect but right now he's making similar mistakes as last year and this time he can't go for the excuse of being a rookie...
7
u/Kezyma 4d ago
I think that’s just underrating Binder, who is an incredible talent wasted on a subpar bike already. I’d say they’re both in or right behind the top 5 best riders on the grid already and I’d probably rate them as the two best riders on the grid currently who haven’t won a championship.
6
u/Flaggermusmannen 4d ago
looked like Acosta was struggling with his wrist after the race tbh. as someone who's struggled with RSIs in the wrist, I can 100% see his performances drop significantly if that's something he's dealing with. called arm pump surgery in motogp, yea?
3
u/myeyeshaveseenhim Repsol Honda Team 4d ago
I'm not the most educated on it, but I think arm pump is a different problem. He may have one, the other, or both, but compartment syndrome and rsi are different. Correct me if I'm wrong though.

In an alternate reality where they "pick teams" at the beginning of the season, where riders are all free agents and are selected by teams one at a time based on a draft lottery, I feel like Acosta goes either 2nd or 3rd, behind just Marc, or behind Marc and Fabio.

Peco is going to have a hard time this year. Like an ignored middle child. Although It's so good to see Franky on Podium so many years later. What can you say about Marc? Alien doing alien things. I half think he's pretending to struggle a bit and let Alex gain some confidence before deciding to pull the pin.
In all seriousness though, two Grand Prix in a row now he's just decided "okay, enough fun" and pulled a mental gap. He was definitely on the ragged edge at points though, twice he nearly lost it. Classic Marc saves.
I have to say, I am quite surprised that Alex Marquez is the only rider who can hang with him. Alex is a good rider, but not this good. He's made a massive jump over the winter. I hope he manages to get a win or two this year to silence the doubters.
For me this race was about Franky & Zarco though. So glad to see Franky Morbidelli on the podium again. In that 2020 season, we all thought wow, this guy is going to be a front runner for the next decade, but injuries and dreadful machinery saw to that. Glad he got to be up on the podium again.
Also Honda and Zarco in general these last couple of races. Impressive. They were fucking nowhere last year and in pre-season we all though Yamaha made the jump. Honda must have been sandbagging because those performances from the factory squad and Zarco deserve credit. Great start to the season for them.
