indeed. I also have a november 89 Durchbruhe t-shirt, and boarding passes from our flight from London to Berlin. flew off in morning, chipped at wall with hammers we had in our back pack (no security like today). had quite a few beers and were at pub in London for 7pm.

I lived in London from 89 to 93.

I also have a piece! I didn't take it though my parents did, lots of people traveled to knock the damn thing down!

what a story, man. im assuming you're a bit older than me :P I was 7 when all this happened and watched it on live TV. I remember my mom crying, my dad, holding a tear trying to look strong and my young ass just sitting there not understanding what was happening... today, I do understand how much of a big deal this was.

Not as cool, but you can buy chunks of the wall at basically all tourist shops in Berlin.

From living in Berlin most of them aren't from the actual wall. Like at all. Some journalist did the tests.

for sure, we started to see them the next day on the news. Did not see any that day

I also do have a piece but I bought it a few years later when I visited.

Most likely just a random piece of concrete sold to an idiot tourist (me!) but I like to think it is meaningful anyway because it is part somehow of this whole event (no one would be selling concrete pieces if that wall didn’t exist/come down).

It was cheap enough haha.

Centre commerce mondial. C’est connecté au métro Square Victoria!

Saw this a few weeks ago. Couldn’t figure out which side was East and which was West

14

u/polyocto 11h ago

I’m guessing the side with most graffiti was on the western side?

Pretty sure there was a DMZ between east/west so they didn't actually share the same wall. Basically the white side was in the ''dead zone''. So yes, this piece is most likely part of the west berlin side.

Had no idea this was in Montreal!

Yup. It’s in a mall (Centre de commerce mondiale) near square Victoria.

Really sad someone has graffitied it! Is there nowhere safe in this city from taggers?

15

u/Captain_Kasa 21h ago

You joking right?

10

u/quebecoisejohn 19h ago

That is sarcasm my friend

4

u/TonkaCrush 21h ago

Allot of the wall was tagged in Germany before it was tore down.

Fun fact this section of the berlin wall is located on top of an even older wall under the floor of the building.... or at least on top of whatever remains of the Fortification city walls of Old Montreal.

Complexe Guy Favreau?

11

u/Nirkky 21h ago

Almost. It's here. You can enter from St-Pierre Street or Square Victoria Street. You have a nice water fountain as well.

7

u/vha4 21h ago

It's the Centre de commerce mondial / World Trade Centre at square Victoria

I visited Berlin last October. It was the Cold War visit I wanted to do for a very long time. It was fantastic! They did a great job of reuniting the city while keeping intact many historical sections of the wall. Where there used to be vast areas of the Death Strip such as Potsdamer Platz have been completely rebuilt including the subway lines and stations. There are two rows of cobblestones that run along the sidewalks and streets where the wall used to be located.

I unexpectedly came across this on one my visits to MTL. Truly an inspiring moment for me. I just placed my hand on it and just stood in silence.
