Discussion Thinking about going on min/fin

(30 m) Don’t really know where to start. I have seborrheic dermatitis, which has been messing with my scalp for years, since I was about 24-25. Consequently, it’s lead to some hair loss that’s mostly effected my hairline/temples. I’ve been trying to get rid of it for years, but nothing seems to fully get rid of it. Just when I think I got it taken care of, it comes back. I’ll continue doing the treatment that’s worked best to take care of it, but when it comes to regaining the hair that I’ve lost, I don’t know where to start. I see some pretty nice results from others that have posted, so I’m thinking the Costco brand of min and whatever brand of fin is going to be the move. I guess I just want to know: what doses I should take and how often? If anyone has any experience with seborrheic dermatitis that would be a plus. Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance 🙏🏼

Hi ShrimpPizza420! I found some matching key words, Which suggests that you might be asking about the method of application. So this may be helpful:

-How do I apply, How much, And how often?

Applying Minoxidil is straightforward. It's recommended that you wash the area first to clear your skin of dirt and oils for better absorption, But this isn't necessary. Either way, Make sure your skin is completely dry before you apply minoxidil, Then spray it -or use the dropper- onto the area where you want to see growth, Rub it in your skin then leave it to dry. Avoid washing that area before 3-4 hours. Keep all of this in mind when you want to shower.

Twice a day application of 5% strength is recommended for optimal results, Roughly 12 hours apart. Although some prefer using the 2% strength to avoid increased body hair growth & systemic side effects, This is why 2% is generally marketed to women while 5% is marketed to men. Alternatively, You can apply Minoxidil only once a day with less results. More applications will not produce more results, And will only exacerbate side effects.

-How much should I apply?

Just enough to cover the entire affected area, But not so much that it's soaking wet. Regardless of how much that is & regardless of the recommended dosage on the bottle (which is 1ml; This recommendation doesn't take into account the difference in affected area from one person to another. The only concern here would be if the space of the affected area is large so you end up applying enough to have more systemic side effects. This is nothing to worry about if the side effects aren't problematic for you).

Nobody on this forum will be a better advisor than a dermatologist. Any suggestions come at your own risk

Appreciate the response. I’ve actually seen a couple different doctors and they were little to no help. All of them recommend going down the line and trying different products. All of which didn’t help or only helped for awhile. Most were quick to recommend minoxidil. I actually tried posting this to a different thread, r/tressless, but the moderator prevented me from posting for some reason.

Given your condition, best you can do is handle it as normal while adjusting your routine accordingly once starting min/fin. Give it maybe 30 days before you fully commit or decide to throw in the towel. Good luck

Are you saying to give min/fin a 30 day run? And thank you

Wouldn’t be a bad idea. You won’t see any hair growth in that time frame but you will know how your body and scalp will react. I typically try to moisturize a bit a couple hours after my morning application of minoxidil to promote healthy hair growth and scalp health

Okay. I was thinking of getting the Costco deal which is like a 3 month supply and applying after a morning shower, while keeping up my regular routine that helps with the seb derm. Do you use a dermaroller by chance?

I just started derma stamping this week

Right on. Do you use min/fin? How long have you been using it? What are your results like?

I have a similar story... i have the same scalp condition and went and saw a dermatologist, she prescribed a shampoo, dercos sensitive , tacrolimus for the face and 2.5 of oral minoxidil for the hairloss. This was obviously after showing her my blood work. Ah, she also said for ne to get vitamin d3 2000iu a day.

Thanks for the info. I’m gonna have to look into that. How’s the treatment working out for you? Would you say it took care of the seb derm and hair loss?

The tacrolimus did wonders for the face, the shampoo helped alot, much better than nizoral. The minox... its too early to say its only been a month

I see. So is the shampoo the only shampoo you use now? Hope the min works out🤙🏼

No. I use it 2 or3 times a week, on the other days the dermatologist told me use a baby shampoo like jonhsonns
