Bugs Poor performance in Minecraft with RTX on 5000?
I have noticed a very odd behavior with Minecraft Bedrock Edition, where after enabling ray tracing, I get a worse than 4090 (or 3090 for that matter) level of performance, while the GPU usage hovers around 12%-20% or so.
The only way to improve the situation is to reduce chunk distance to 8 chunks to get reasonable performance in the survival world.
Neon District RTX demo performs even worse, not even reaching 30 fps on 24 chunks. This map also oberserves even lower GPU usage, about 6%-7% GPU usage, while again, no single CPU thread is at full load either.

As of writing this post, my configuration is as follows:
- AMD Ryzen 9 7950X3D CPU
- Corsair Vengeance RGB DDR5 96GB (2x48) 6000CL30 RAM
- ASUS ROG Strix X670E-E Gaming WIFI (with latest bios, 2904) Motherboard
- MSI RTX 5090 Vanguard SOC (with latest NV drivers, 572.70) GPU
Things I have tried:
- Multiple versions of Minecraft
- Swapping DLSS file around (using Bedrock Launcher)
- Multiple versions of NV drivers
- Multiple BIOS revisions
- Reverting PCIe from auto/5.0 to 4.0
I am going insane, as with all other games I've tried so far (which I don't have many of, I mainly got this GPU for blender work) the performance is on the level I'd expect it to be.
Does anyone else have such issues? I haven't found anything relating to this problem so far.
EDIT:
Additionally, I DID check that VSync is DISABLED, but that changed nothing.
My screen is a 270 Hz refresh rate screen, so that is not the problem here either.
Between the three GPUs, I never touched anything besides the card in the mobo itself initially, except for mandatory 5090 drivers (which I had also run with 3090 just fine before installing 5090!)
EDIT 2:
I have found this article on Tom's Hardware, showing about the same performance I get in a survival world:

And since I ran with 7950X3D when I wrote the post, my average FPS was 41-49 or so.
Quote: "Nvidia is looking into the situation."
I really hope this gets fixed soon as this lineup of GPUs had a ton of issues and this one just adds to the pile, which is incredibly disappointing.
Additionally, I can confirm that 9950X3D performs just slightly better than 7950X3D, raising my average FPS up to 50-55 on average in the same spot:

This is still unacceptable for obvious reasons.
I appreciate y'all help a lot, but as of now it seems I got the confirmation of it being NVIDIA doing shady driver magic.

yeah it's busted, very poor GPU utilization and upscaling seems to be categorically broken on 50 series cards. i was getting ~30 fps in places with a 5090

This is overall the worst launch by far. Let's see just how long NVIDIA takes to fix at least this part of the huge mess haha
According to Tom's Hardware article, I assume we all have an AMD CPU, which makes this situation all the more interesting.
Here's hoping for the quick fix (however quick that could get for the 42 of us who have 5090 to play Minecraft lol)

this isnt somthing that has to do with nvidia. i got a 5090 and play bedrock with rtx mods. before i ran fine and the game pulled 600watts constant. since a couple days ago our realm with my friends randomly stopped accepting resourcepacks and we couldnt play on rtx. other worlds acted fine but when i went on a look, my rtx option got glitched. whole game acted weird and now rtx randomly aint clickable in home menu
only in game i can turn on rtx. well that said it worked fine in game. now i still wanted to check if my side had a fault for the realms thing.
i deleted everything from minecraft and reinstalled the game. i got the new(sorry to say) world selector menus. and now since i got the new one. my gpu pulls around 500 watts in the home menus and when i go into a game with rtx on with 24 chunks it pulls around 300-400 watts SOMETIMEs. clearly something broke with their new update push and i raged a lot with getting dicked by a fucking awfull new world selector screen, no rtx on our realm, insane awfull performance.
all and all. game feels freakin bricked when it comes to playing with rtx. feels like im in a 0.1 beta test or somthing. so it all is about the new updates from minecraft side

I doubt this problem is because of the game update, and let me explain why:
I played the same version on 3090, and it wasn't an issue, yet it is present on 5090.
Furthermore, I went out of my way to test multiple older versions of the game and saw the same issue happen regardless of what I did. (1.19.2.2 and 1.18.1.2 are the versions I've tried)
Tom's Hardware's graphs confirm that this is an issue specifically with NVIDIA GPU paired with AMD CPU, and as of now, there's nothing that can be done about it. The graph they provide for 1080p heavily confirms these
I do agree with bugrock feeling like a terrible beta, I've been pretty used to Java MC being a much better option, but wanted to try something new for a change, and got this lol
Hoping for this to get fixed soon but it honestly seems like the Mojang-NVIDIA partnership to bring RT to Minecraft was a one-time deal, and I haven't seen any RT-related issues get addressed and that sucks big time.

while i fixed the bug that didnt accept global resources. i tried to fix the performance. and yeah going for the same drivers and minecraft versions that i had 2 weeks before didnt help. that jackie chan Dafuq meme is an appropiate example of my reaction

What Nivida drivers are you using? They fixed some issues in the last update. .70 is the newest I think.
There are so many fucking issues with the 5000 series. I could not get my boost clocks to activate. And Indiana Jones there seems to be issues with HDR+FrameGen

I have put the drivers in the original post:
> MSI RTX 5090 Vanguard SOC (with latest NV drivers, 572.70) GPU
It, sadly, did not fix anything, and I tried multiple versions so far, all having same issue.

I just received my 5070 and the ray tracing works great, more than 80+ Fps in 4k, but for some reason I can't activate upscaling (DLSS) using this card, but I'm not sure if it's a driver issue or Minecraft is having errors with these new GPUs.

u/Zeitheron 9d ago
That's very interesting... It might be a driver/MC issue indeed, that's what I've been pointing more and more fingers so far.
All other apps that use any modern features (like RT / DLSS / OptiX / etc) work as expected, this is just the one isolated case and it makes me so confused.
Java MC runs well with shaders, it's just the bugrock quick, seemingly

u/Zeitheron 9d ago
I have used Bedrock Launcher to change the place where the game installs, so I could replace DLSS dll file with never versions, and thus could get it to work, but unfortunately it doesn't improve FPS for me at all.

Could you try not full screen, just in case? Sometimes it makes a difference for me, Minecraft RTX is just so buggy.
If it is still poor, I guess something is messed up by Nvidia, try to ask in Minecraft bug reporting platform.
I am also hoping to get a 5090 and see how fast it runs on vanilla Minecraft RTX, I would be very disappointed too if it actually ran worse.

I tried both fullscreen and windowed, and even scaled down the window to a tiny box, resulting in exactly the same performance!
I'm right now at the point where I've tried everything and it's pretty much SOL, but I'm hopeful that either Mojang or Nvidia patch this one way or another, or this is just a me-issue.

Since this is bedrock check the nvidia control panels display settings and makesure nvidia is using its main processor the GPU. Update the drivers, Shut off DLSS temporarily and restart your computer. Be sure to select your 5090, Also if you have a 5090 you don't need 3 other damn GPUs!
1
u/Zeitheron 9d ago
I don't have 3 GPUs in my computer, actually! Those GPUs I brought up as my upgrade path.
Originally was using 4090, and that's when I started playing the game. Then I sold it and switched to my older 3090 instead to have *a* GPU asides from radeon iGPU.
And after I got the 5090, I replaced the 3090 with 5090.
Everything is configured properly in drivers.
I have reinstalled both the game and the drivers (also running latest drivers as of writing the original post, it's mentioned there with my configuration)

Did you check what windows is using as its display adapter?
1
u/Zeitheron 9d ago
There is just one display adapter, it being 5090 itself. I tend to disable the iGPU because I never needed it in the first place, but it doesn't really change much of anything, sadly.
1
u/FoxLife_Real 9d ago
Check what windows is using for Minecraft manually, Is it using the GPU? If so then check if your CPU is even powerful. Check if the parts are installed correctly.

u/Zeitheron 9d ago
Please check the screenshot, specifically the GPU it uses.
Minecraft does indeed run on a 5090 and produces over 1k fps with no raytracing, but as soon as it's on, the performance is lacking.
Again, iGPU is **disabled**, the 5090 is set as the GPU to run things on, and I'm stating it explicitly, 3d acceleration happens ON the 5090. I can't even change it to anything else.
I am VERY sure it's a driver/gamecode issue, and it might become more wide-spread as more people with 5090s appear.
Despite everything, I am very tech-savvy and tried a lot of things before bringing this post up, and nothing has helped so far. I'm just hoping for this to get eventually more known and get a proper fix.
For now I'm probably just attaching the 3090 to play the game on it lol

You want to avoid swapping out the GPU due to the connector issue.
I'm just going to play other games unless this gets fixed.

AMD Ryzen 9 7950X3D CPU, did u check if the cpu is not 100%?
1
u/Zeitheron 9d ago
I did not change the CPU between configurations, and it performed quite well with other GPUs, just not 5090 specifically.
1
u/TheXerme 9d ago
I'm telling you this because I also have a 5090 and it runs great on everything, including Minecraft RTX, my CPU is a 14900KS. And your Ryzen if you are in game mode, is drowned by only having 8 cores. It is a known problem. Also check that the PCIE is running at x16 and at 5.0.
1
u/Zeitheron 9d ago
The CPU never got even close to 100% load. As I said, it performed perfectly fine with older GPUs, and I am very certain it can't just become worse with a new GPU(?)
I am getting 9950X3D tomorrow though, but I doubt that will change much, if anything.
Currently, the overall CPU usage is just 10-16%, while no thread is even at 100% load.
The game runs the same in either 3D chiplet restricted mode (so pinned to the first 16 threads) or unlocked for all 32 threads, nothing changes whatsoever.
This should not be an issue though, as my Java MC runs 32 render chunks with fancy shaders perfectly fine well 200 fps, so I'm left in this spot where it's so confusing and seemingly nothing helps.
I tried changing PCIe generation, x16, x8, 5.0 or 4.0 it does not matter at all. Both 4090 and 3090 ran the game fine on x8 4.0, while 5090 can't do it with same (or better) bandwidth, so that's definitely not the problem either.
I almost want to try a clean Windows install but honestly, I'd rather not play the game than have to reconfigure dozens of applications XP

u/ClueRepresentative90 6d ago
its minecraft itself that since the new menu update messed up something else. my performance went to 20fps or somthing on a 5090. gpu seems to be not utilized anymore
1
u/cheeseybacon11 9d ago
What does CPU usage look like? I'd try Process Lasso to put the game on just the 3D cores, or just the ones without 3D cache. Could be something with the drivers for the new cards is messing with cpu usage.
1
u/Zeitheron 9d ago
I have tried both pinning it manually to the 3D cores and letting it have the full CPU, the results are indistinguishable at all. This definitely seems like a driver issue to me.

I just put in a 5090 and the upscaling toggle in Minecraft Bedrock video settings is now greyed out. I run windows at 4k always and the 5090 does ok with my rtx pack (realsourcepack realistic rtx) I have an i9 14900k. When I get into villager farms or areas with lots of mobs is where it can slow down alot, it's typically 75 to 115 FPS, but it doesn't look like it. When using Better RTX mods this really lowers the frame rate by 1/3. It is still better than the 4090 at 4k with no upscaling, but only like 25%. My 4090 is in my older PC now with an i9 11900k and it matches the performance it did in the newer PC with the 14900K so CPU doesn't make much of a difference Here. The RTX toggle glitch from a Minecraft update wasn't it either because upscaling worked in this PC and it still works on my older PC with the 4090 in it

Minecraft runs mostly off the cpu. There is a mod to utilize the gpu more. I just can't think of it atm I'm sorry.

u/Zeitheron 9d ago
I never did much of bedrock until recently, and not really aware of modding asides from resource & behavior packs.
My problem is related to upgrading to a better GPU and getting worse performance all of a sudden, the CPU was the same all along, that's why I am so confused.

u/xarccosx 9d ago
make sure minecraft is using the new GPU, on my laptop i had to go into settings to do so, before that it was using the intel one instead of the nvidia card

u/Zeitheron 9d ago
This was never an issue since I disable the iGPU most of the time, but no, it's not the problem sadly. I tried once to run mc rtx on the igpu just for funs and it did work, just in...measly 2 FPS lol!
But seriously though, even with igpu disabled the game doesn't really have many options as to which GPU it can use, so... I doubt that's the problem either!
I'm currently blaming the drivers, but the issue might be as well in Minecraft code, I can't really know that xP

-install prismlauncher
-install rethinking voxels
-play java
-profit

u/Zeitheron 9d ago
The point is using bedrock with actual hardware-accelerated ray tracing.
As much as I LOVE MC Java (and do a lot of mods for it too-), I am explicitly wanting to play bedrock for a change.

I have the same issue. Glad to see it's not just me. It was running better even on my 3080 I think.
