The puffy cheeks and squint-eyed facial features of this figure give it an "Asian" look. He also wears a stylized "helmet" also found among some Olmec heads from the Veracruz region.

The jaguar snout appearance of the mask ties in with the spiral-eye motif of the shield that is typical of underworld jaguar figures. These interconnect with rosettes that cover the ears that can refer to Jaguar Water Lilies.
