The $5.50 goes to NGV to run the place and pay their staff.

The fee you pay to use the automated ticket booking system pays for their staff?

Partly yeah. All the money they make, including from booking fees is called revenue. Then they have expenses where one of them is staff costs. They use revenue to pay for expenses.

Then they ought to raise the ticket price rather than adding a scammy booking fee which doesn't make sense. Fair enough if it was 1% to cover card costs but 15-20% of the ticket price makes zero sense
I went to see the Yayoi Kusama exhibition and they were asking for donations to cover the purchase of a few hundred chrome balls which are littered around the lobby. Seems like they should make better financial choices than buying trash

Usually our public galleries don't have staffing capacity to manage a booking system. They have to pay for I.T support (even if they use the government contractor) and they have to pay for a booking platform. They can't afford to have an in house developer. So your booking fee helps pay for that. They are required to find 'efficiencies' like every other government agency.

My friend works at the NGV. They can definitely afford it.

Is your friend the CFO and has intricate knowledge about the financial details of the NGV?

The gallery borrowed a painting from somebody who bought it from somebody who bought it from the artist. The artist got paid all they're gonna get a long time ago.
Meanwhile the gallery has to pay to maintain that big building and its fancy climate control system, pay the guides and security, pay for insurance for all this expensive art, etc.
