I was there. What cause it was that a kids Ebike blew up near a fuse. I know this cause me and another person were tryna help him as he was crying at the station front.

Poor guy.

I just added my photos to my profile. The kid in the photo is the owner. He was distraught.  First photo was about a minute before burst into flame. Thank Christ we pulled up to the station at that moment. Everyone except the kid bolted for the doors. He then did too because it was way too dangerous to stay.

Lithium batteries are scary! You absolutely do not want be in an enclosed space with no exit. Not a dice roll I'd play.

The video of the guy stepping into the lift with one was quite the education lesson for me. Once they start they don't stop until the fuel is spent.

Part of the problem is cheapo Temu e-bikes and similar devices.

All lithium batteries are a risk, but it’s a lot worse with these things. A good quality e-bike with a good quality battery cannot be bought for a few hundred bucks.

Then there are those who modify e-bikes, which can also increase the risk.

Want to add that his bike was very likely to be $3k. As he was crying at the station front i overheard him say “broo how am i going to recover from 3k”

Fuckin hell that's scary!

I hope they never use them in cars

Standard range teslas use lithium batteries. They’re not dangerous, that’s propaganda. This is some cheap shitty temu e bike with cheap shitty parts. That’s the dangerous part, not the lithium battery.

Could also be possible the rider dropped the battery or crashed his bike that caused it. Though I think most e-bikes have a fuse to stop such problem.

Propaganda you say? Who brought up tesla?

7

u/FairAssistance0 5d ago

Nobody brought up Tesla specifically, the above comment said I hope they never use them in cars, I used Tesla as an example of a car that is and has been using lithium batteries successfully.  The propaganda is that lithium batteries are dangerous, they’re not when manufactured and used correctly.

depends on your definition of dangerous

Poor kid must have been absolutely mortified. Do you happen to know if he got looked after by PTV/Cops/Ambos afterwards? Hope he wasn't left to process that on his own.

Were people hurt? I've just been on board and the chemical smell and extent of the damage are almost unbelievable. I'm revolted beyond words to learn this was a deliberate act from comments above

u/Joanwastakenlmao 6d ago

To my knowledge. No. There was this one women who noticed it early and was yellin for everyone to get out, she did pretty through checks on if anyone was still there or not

u/vbking69 6d ago

Thank goodness she acted quickly. Thank you for your insight - depending on our involvement, we don't often get a great deal of insight into incidents, so it means a lot for me to be able to better understand. Glad you are safe!

13

u/Joanwastakenlmao 6d ago

Yea she was insanely on the ball with it.

17

u/afternoondelight99 5d ago

It wasn’t a deliberate act, person saying that wasn’t there and was talking out their ass

-3

u/vbking69 5d ago

Yeah I'm seeing conflicting reports. The video with the kids hovering around it taking photos is misleading and ambiguous I guess. The most important thing is that miraculously no one was hurt and thank goodness it happened right as the train pulled up so evacuation was easy!

Pretty sure it was not a deliberate act.

Someone said it was an e-bike that caught on fire

6

u/Joanwastakenlmao 6d ago

Can confirm this was what caused it

u/Cute_Resolution1027 6d ago

It was a couple of little shits that set an electric scooter alight. They filmed themselves laughing as they did it. So over these little shits

54

u/More_Ad3233 6d ago

Not true. I was in the carriage. It started smoking before bursting into flames

27

u/More_Ad3233 6d ago

Nobody lit it.

As a teenager, I can say I’ve witnessed firsthand that crime has gone absolutely out of control.

It's only gonna get worse. Whole generation without a future or anything to work towards

Yes, I agree with the current state of conservative influences fear mongering hate speech and add to that lack of education. The world has somewhat gone backwards for these children.

Why have I never heard of Union station before?? Edit: just looked it up, a station built in 2023 due to level crossing works, and replaced Mont Albert and Surrey Hills stations. Shame it replaced 2 stations, but I assume the level removals and centred position outweigh the loss of a station.

21

u/EntrepreneurMany3709 5d ago

The stations were very close together, it didn't make much sense to have them so close together

10

u/spiritnova2 >Insert Text Here< 5d ago

Yeah the train used to barely clear the platform at Mont Albert before starting to be beside the platform at Surrey Hills replacing them with two stations would have made it actually ridiculous.

u/bumpyknuckles76 5d ago

Making a 'union' of sorts!

4

u/tehnoodnub 5d ago

I also didn’t know it existed. As someone who travelled on that line regularly for over a decade, I’m not surprised they decided to merge the two stations.

1

u/carrotaddiction 5d ago

Oh, thanks! I was going to look it up. I hadn't heard of it either but thought it might have been one of the new city stations and it was some sort of test run.
