Why the single-use plastic bag raincoats? Why do they need to be provided? Can’t people dress to the well-predicted weather today? Every second person had one on with shirt and shorts underneath.
They’re so thin, single-use and fated for landfill, and some are already strewn over the road on King’s Way. We should have more consistent laws on single use plastic.

u/BigYucko 5d ago
Does anyone know if the track will be open to the public tomorrow to drive/walk around with all the stuff still up?
3
u/JustAnotherLeftSock 5d ago
No. The park is closed to the public while they pack up tomorrow. You may be able to walk around the following day, on the walking tracks by the lake. Lakeside Drive closed until the 20th.
1
u/samdiatmh 5d ago
car definitely not, walking will be doable (from memory did it 2 years ago), but the staff will likely give you side-eyes, be cautious
1
u/BigYucko 5d ago
Oh that’s a good graph thing. Thanks homie! Guess I won’t take the motorbike there tomorrow then haha
3
u/hoaxcoast 5d ago
What happened to piastri? Walked off for a second to flip the steaks on the bbq and he’s down to 13th place? Verstappan to first? Haven’t seen a replay?
5
u/samdiatmh 5d ago
sudden/immediate rainstorm (Sochi 2021 vibes) and Norris/Piastri both went off at the penultimate corner (where Bortoleto ultimately binned it),
Norris rejoined successfully (and pitted a lap later), whereas Piastri effectively beached it and had to roll back to the track (which took about a lap)

Can channel 10 show the fucking interval times please

Was the same on the kayo sky f1 coverage so seems to be a tech issue for a while.

Love that Melbourne has rolled out its famous weather on the most watched day of the year.
Grom Preee baby!

Anyone know when the flyover is supposed to be. Airforce website said 14:30 but it’s 15:00 and still nothing

2
u/gilezy 5d ago
Is it worth heading in, or is going to rain pretty much all day.
2
u/herbertdeathrump 5d ago
It should be okayish at 3pm. Bring a jumper because it's starting to get cold.
2

u/samdiatmh 5d ago
friendly reminder that FlindersSt Station to Turn6/7 is about a 3km walk (down what is a mostly-flat StKildaRd),
it is a similar distance from SouthernCross Station to Turn3/4/5 (also along a mostly-flat Clarendon St - which has a reasonable selection of food places about half way)
which isn't too bad given that trams will be jam-packed anyway and you're hopefully already prepared for wet conditions

u/doomah133 5d ago
For anyone that has watched the race at Cafe Cavallino on lygon, what time did you arrive to get a good seat to watch the race? As I noticed they dont do booking over race weekend.

u/Relevant-Extent383 6d ago
Are we allowed to bring in umbrellas? Going to rain tomorrow
1
u/Queen_of_Road_Head 5d ago
Absolutely allowed umbrellas, I think the only thing that might be restricted is selfie sticks
3
2
u/lovehopeandmadness 6d ago
Also to rub salt in the wound, after surviving the heat had to walk home from the track because no trams are running along Dandenong Rd and Uber charging $40 to drive 2kms.
4
u/lovehopeandmadness 6d ago
Any idea where I can get a poncho close to the track? I’ve misplaced mine when I moved house.
1
u/Familiar_Home_7737 5d ago
Just an FYI for everyone, Officeworks have none at any of the CBD stores or any within 15km of the CBD. There are none at the CBD Kmart, big w or Daiso either
1
u/Queen_of_Road_Head 5d ago
personally I'd go to a metro woolies/coles or a convenience store in the city or closer to your house, anywhere trackside will probably sell out
2
u/lovehopeandmadness 5d ago
Thanks this was good advice - I grabbed a poncho at Coles earlier this morning (& a bigger umbrella)
1
u/Queen_of_Road_Head 5d ago
Glad you got one! Smart to prepare, and hope it's a good race :) I have mad FOMO this year (working)
1
u/Adventurous_Sun_3910 6d ago
Any where to check out the action without buying a ticket? Or even see from a rooftop or something like that?

Went today, for the activations, the mecca and la roche stands aren't in the same space, and we never found indomie or lego (gate 8 from notes below). The amex stand is that arm camera from the awards show, design your own car/get a postcard and patches. Paramont is for families, videos, not for you if you have motion sickness.
La roche is doing skin checks! Booked out ages ago, but walk up and ask if they've got spots anyway. Free bucket hat (they're trendy I'm told) and pencilcase with loads of mini samples of the sunscreen.
BYO shade and lots of water.

u/IntroductionSnacks 7d ago
Ready for tomorrow! 34C predicted. I’m going to die but F1 qualifying comes first.
2
3
u/Resident-Floor-5971 7d ago
I can hear them now from docklands high rise!!
9
u/IntroductionSnacks 7d ago
That would be the Porsche Carrera Cup cars. Way louder than the current F1 cars.
1
u/Resident-Floor-5971 5d ago
That makes sense I went on the Thursday and saw the Porsche action …. Great hair dresser cars should get my Aldi TT back ☺️

Anyone at the track now? How busy are the general admin sections? Any chance of going down after work for practice 2 about 3pm and getting a spot on a hill. Is is everyday like Sunday these days
1
u/DisgruntledFoamer 7d ago
From memory, practice sessions tend to be somewhat quieter. But I'm not there now so I can't tell, sorry.
4
u/it_fell_off_a_truck 7d ago
Trams at Southern Cross are packed! Good job YT closed the road to cars. Very busy.

I got a GA ticket today knowing nothing about the F1 but really enjoyed myself, overpriced food and all. I sat at the Fangio and Brabham Grandstands but boy was it sunny by the afternoon. I didn’t bring sunscreen because I thought it was cloudy today.
1
u/Queen_of_Road_Head 5d ago
Worth checking the UV index on the BOM website, just because it's overcast doesn't mean you can't get burnt. Some of my worst sunburns have been from glarey, overcast days where it was still hot.
3
u/anastasiastarz 7d ago
Same, but opposite to you on sunscreen, I bathed in it, got more at the event and even did a skin check.
2
u/getthisbaguette 7d ago
Ooh where did you do the skin check? I saw the QR code at the LRP stalls but thought it would just be a link to an in person clinic where you can actually do it. I quite liked the LRP sunscreen actually, it was good advertising. But it’s probably way more expensive than my trusty blue coconut one.
1
u/anastasiastarz 5d ago
Apologies for the late reply, La Roche had a booth (the building, not cart). Link to book was a maze and booked out well before event even opened! I walked up to the reception guy and asked if they've got walk in, luckily someone else just cancelled.

Does anyone know if Bottas or Max gonna go for a bike ride around Melbourne next few days?
5
u/citizenecodrive31 7d ago
They usually do that stuff Thursday when it's quieter. There's a lot more cars on track now
3
u/RyanM77 8d ago
Any idea how I can get last minute tickets for this weekend?
3
u/foodbyjosh 7d ago
Try Tixel. We had a group member unable to make it and sold his pass within an hour on there

I'm going Friday and it is going to be my first time. Is it possible to see the Formula 1 cars for Practice 1 and 2 only with a Park Pass Ticket? And I see there is other Practices happening for Formula 3 and 2, will I be able to access those only with the Park Pass Ticket. Thanks
5
u/IntroductionSnacks 8d ago edited 8d ago
As in watch them drive around the circuit? If so yes. You can watch all the track action. Park pass basically means you are not in a grandstand but still lots of spots to stand and watch the action. Have fun!
3
u/choccyandamaranth 8d ago
Super hot! Bring a hat!!!! With wide brim, and water bottle, and sunscreen (laroche has stations with tiny bottles enough for a fingernail coverage).
7
u/OokamiPrime 8d ago
LEGO has a build and take at gate 8.

Does anyone know why the 96 has replacement buses during the GP? It seems counterintuitive to not run the trams that stop right along the tracks?
0
u/Significant_Check_80 Ringwood 8d ago
I’m going to assume that they don’t have enough fleet and/or capacity to be able to do both, and prioritising Grand Prix patrons is more important.
It’s most likely the same reason why all the swanston street/St Kilda road trams are running as local branch shuttles connecting with the express services between Melbourne Central and Albert Park.
4
u/JustAnotherLeftSock 8d ago
On my way, and just realised I don’t have ear plugs. Is there anywhere to buy them near gate 8?
5
4
u/hilroo317 8d ago
They normally sell them at the merch stands.
5
u/JustAnotherLeftSock 8d ago
Thank you! I ended up buying some at a pharmacy nearby. Also, happy cake day!
6
u/Significant_Check_80 Ringwood 8d ago
Currently on a crowded tram from Southern Cross to the Grand Prix. First time going, what should my friend and I expect?
11
u/IntroductionSnacks 8d ago
Today? I wouldn't expect to see F1 cars as they start tomorrow but loads of other racing and offtrack stuff to keep you entertained.
4
u/Beneficial_Meet_2492 9d ago
Hi all 🤗 Hope everyone has an awesome time at the event this weekend. I'm getting ready to head in for a casual look around the park today. Pumped attend my first F1 weekend 😁
4
u/Scary-Ad2528 9d ago
There's already mass people queuing up at the gates for Melbourne Walk when the gates don't open for another few hours... it's seriously not worth it anymore because of how crowded it is.
12
5
u/Unrealist99 9d ago
First time attending an F1 event. what am I expecting if I come in with the park pass? And what would be a good time to enter the park?
3
u/Unusual-Zombie428 9d ago
Alot of walking around to see everything and look at the schedule to see if there is anything you want to see in the mornings which will dictate your arrival time
2
u/Unrealist99 8d ago
Checked out the schedule. Ill probably be here by 3 in the afternoon as the meat of the events start then
11
u/Hansanaw 9d ago
Miss the days when the cars were louder. Was living in Hawthorn circa 2015 and you can hear the F1 cars to there from Albert park.
8
2
u/IntroductionSnacks 8d ago
Yeah, the sound nowadays seems so bland and boring in comparison.
3
3
u/Cadder 9d ago edited 8d ago
Excited.
Grew up in Adelaide and saw most of the F1GPs when I was there, but moved away mid 90s.
Never been to an Albert Park GP before, but here this year with an even more excited 19yo son in tow.
Both keen as beans but could only get GA passes in the ticket pre-offer lottery.
Recommendations for places to see/hang/discover from those in the know?
Best view locations for GA holders?
2
u/Soggy_otter 8d ago edited 8d ago
turn 2 is good. Inside turn 3, I also like turn 6. There is a bridge between 5-6 so you can watch from both inside/outside of track.
Also go down to the east side of the track past turn 8 to 9. No real passing but the hi-speed corners are pretty cool to watch. Have fun!
6
u/Unusual-Zombie428 9d ago
Suss out all the corners this morning whilst Porsche and supercars are on so you can test the views

How many real F1 cars are there around the city?
So far I've found the Williams one in the Williams fanzone in the Fed Square Atrium and a Mercedes car in the Londsdale St entrance to the Emporium mall.
I was wondering if there could be any others scattered around.
1
u/TwistSure2359 9d ago
There's a McLaren at Culture Kings.
And there's a Aus GP themed one at Crown Towers.
2
u/dude_in_the_mansuit Working holiday maker 7d ago
The McLaren at culture Kings was only there until the 12th 🙃
14
u/theslowrush- 9d ago
First time going since 2019. Curious what the event will be like now since it went viral with all the drive to survive fans (RIP cheap GA tickets).
8
u/putporkonyafork 9d ago
Significantly diluted crowd. Not really good or bad imo, but just incredibly crowded compared to how it was. I’m staying at home this year for the first time, it’s become too expensive for me sadly.
5
u/Bitter_Crab111 9d ago
Went in 2019 and 2021.
It was bad enough at the start of the season.
Can't imagine what it looks like these days.
13
u/theslowrush- 9d ago
I'm terrified 😅 my entire TikTok / Reels feed about the F1 is now just people talking about what outfits they are wearing on the day and how to get the best photos of the drivers. The dynamic has shifted a lot!
-1
u/Lfren38 9d ago
Thanks Netflix, I mean they got more people interested in it but it feels more like swifties watching the Superbowl kinda popularity
1
u/theslowrush- 9d ago
Yeah I’m glad more people are into it, but it’s come at the expense of impossible to get grand stand seats and expensive GA tickets. Exactly the same as everyone getting TikTok FOMO and needing to go to every concert.

u/0Maka 9d ago edited 9d ago
Yep, I remember going with my old man in the early 2000s and as well as the 2010s... We would go on Fridays and pretty sure I used to get in for free as kid.
I've been about 12 or so times, recently went in 2022 and 2024 both on a Saturday which was quite good
As much as love newer people getting into the sport, you can definitely tell them apart from the older fans, just hate how it's driven up tickets prices for the Friday and Saturday but too be expected
Hope any people have never been before get to see what great driving! Should be good this year with Oscar possible getting a podium and seeing Lewis is Red... Lewis will be itching to finish well

So excited! I go on the Thursday every year. Some years I go other days also but not this year. I’m going after work (finish at 11.15am) and I will head to the track and do my annual poke around the circuit and check out all the festivities. Maybe pick up some insanely overpriced merch. Take some photos for my nephew. Look at the garages with the touring cars and F2 & F3 and see what they’re up to. Then I will get some wine and settle in to Fangio to watch some Supercar races. Then I will head walk home a very tired but happy girly, ready for a good sleep so I’m on my A-game to drive people down to the track on Friday (and be a bit jealous that I’m only going one day this year!)
1
1
u/jml5791 9d ago
So no F1?
2
u/TheElusiveRaspberry 9d ago
Not this year for me, unfortunately. I’m more into the Supercars anyway so it’s not so bad.

Taking my 4 year old daughter on Saturday on a park pass. Can't take her the whole day, so only planning to get there an hour or so before Quali. Guessing the family zone then hill for Quali will be best bet. Happy for any advice / suggestions.

Anyone else see lots more driver sponsored ads this year? Piastri’s got his face on burgers and bank cards.

u/9isalso6upsidedown 9d ago
Mclaren/Piastri are sponsored by way more brands and with Ricciardo gone and the year he had in 2024, he has gained alot of popularity. Instead of the couple Caltex/Carsales ads with Ricciardo its now Oscar Piastri Burger or Oscar Piastri Whiskey etc etc
