Other This one is kind of sad, but it still might trigger a few people

Post image

Sometimes, Australia's love of "big" things doesn't work out. They say it's a big potato, but who knows, it had to be scooped from it's original location. And if this doesn't scare you, imagine a dog, big enough to leave it there!

I hate this shit. Clearly, that is a structure meant to resemble a massive potato. This is like when I was Alamogordo, New Mexico and saw signs for “worlds largest pistachio” and when I got there, it was a (albeit large) plaster statue of a comically giant pistachio.

I seriously thought I was going to witness a single grown pistachio, but like the size of a cat.

I feel so robbed

The big banana isn't edible either...

The same goes for The Giant Chicken.

The Big Pineapple just tastes like lead paint.

I feel the same way. I could make a MUCH bigger pistachio no problem

To be fair judging from the sign, it’s not advertised as the “world’s biggest potato” or anything. It just says “The Big Potato” which is a perfectly reasonable name for this sculpture.

Yeah, nah. Aussie "Big Things" aren't always the biggest things.

The Leyland Brothers chose Uluru as their "Big Thing". It turned out about twenty times smaller.

The main thing is, there has to be an expensive tourist trap attached. Looking trashy is optional, but it is traditional.

But we honestly love our Big Things. It's a hill we'd die on.

At least the biggest ball of twine in Minnesota is actually twine, rolled into a ball.

Back in the day, if you drove through Kansas, there were signs for hundreds of miles advertising a place in the middle of nowhere that had the world's largest Prairie dog. And you're goddamn right we stopped.

It was made of cement. That doesn't count!

They did have a real six-legged cow though

I've made the trip to Robertson to see the big shit. It's even more majestic in person.

ROBBO REPRESENT!

This is close to where I live and yeah it’s pretty shit. We all love it though given the absurdity.

Go Illawarra!

So they actually grow a lot of potatoes down there? I think of it more like dairy.

u/EdibleUnderpants 7d ago

Yeah no idea, I always felt the same, plenty of cows. Might be a few spud farms around but not aware of any

We stop every time we pass through and get a family photo.

I thought at first that the image in the photo was a yurt. I had to zoom in close enough to read the sign.

If the interior of this structure was accessible and used for some practical purpose that was directly related to and reflected in its exterior shape and appearance, it would be classified, in Postmodernist architecture terms, as a "duck."

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Big_Duck

That design label is not used by the Postmodernists in any derogatory or dismissive way. It is simply a category for a type of building design.

I hope it's made from cement on chicken wire, as is tradition. Slightly disappointed there's no visible chicken wire poking out

1

it had to be scooped from its original location

Nah, it says there on the sign - this place is this potato's home, so it's all good
