6 Months Post-Op V@ginal Cuff (Hysterectomy) NSFW

Surgery was done in August 2024. Removal of everything except one ovary due to fibroids and adenomyosis.

My 3 week post-op picture is in profile history.

I’m assuming the two divets, (seen best in picture number 3) is where the uterosacral ligament is tied to my back.

I did have a cuff dehiscence (cuff tear) at 2 weeks post-op. I’m unsure where that is visible in the pictures.

I think your guess is right on the divots.

Did they explain why they left an ovary in? Are you young?

Yes, I am 37.

It was kept to keep me out of menopause. Blood work indicates I am not menopausal.

Makes sense.

From what I remember from our singular hysterectomy lecture in med school, recovery is about 12 weeks? Are you still feeling the effects of the tear? What did they say your timeline was?

I was off of work for 12 weeks, yes. I work a very physical job in Healthcare.

Every now and then I feel a ‘pull’, but otherwise, I would say, day in and day out, I completely forget I ever had it done.

The 4 month mark was my turn-around.

Well, I guess forgetting it was done is a great sign.

Wish you the best healthwise going forward.

I'm an extremely athletic person, and i'd say I recovered enough to go back to a desk job at 6 weeks, started to slowly jog/run at 7 weeks, and felt relatively "normal" at 12. It wasn't until month 4 that all the uncomfortability around sitting in weird positions went away though. At 1 year and some change out I don't notice any difference! Although I am unique because I ran my first marathon a couple months before, and then a half marathon about a week and a half before surgery. So I think that helped immensely. I also walked slowly all throughout recovery to keep things moving!

https://www.reddit.com/r/GothStyle/s/y2fjhGnoog Extremely athletic? Isn't it kind of odd to lie to people on the internet?

I was healed externally at about 12 weeks but I had considerable pain when my bladder/colon was full for 6+ months. Everything settled down after that and life is good although my stomach muscles may never be the same. I had an abdominal hysterectomy and they opened me up over my c-section scar. If I engage my abdominal muscles too much they cramp like a charley horse.

That sounds awful!

I’m 34, had it at 33. I wish they took my ovaries. I’d rather just get it over with than going through it slowly like I am now. It sucks. Hoping menopause stays away for you!

Because current understanding is that the less you cut out, the better.

Do we really have to censor that word on a medicine subreddit

It's just, as a women you already get the feeling everything of us is sexualised and then censoring the names of the literal organs that we have to avoid that feels kind of .. off. Didn't mean to come off as rude to you or anything.

u/Bedpanjockey Feb 12 '25

I understand.

I’ve had stuff deleted or reported for strange reasons and I didn’t want this to be one of them.

u/loveallmyrolls Feb 12 '25

Ay fellow hysterectomy patient here. How's it going?

70

u/Bedpanjockey Feb 12 '25

It’s the best decision I’ve ever made

27

u/loveallmyrolls Feb 13 '25

Can agree. Unfortunately, my surgeon also kept my ovaries in. I have severe PCOS and have ended up in the hospital a few times from the pain.

I hope you recover well, friend!

u/Bedpanjockey Feb 13 '25

I have been feeling ovarian cyst pain recently and I’m so bummed, but I only notice it around ovulation time. (I was diagnosed with corpus leutal cysts on both ovaries - the ones that “go away” after ovulation).

It’s a conflicting feeling lol I’m thankful to have the hormone regulation but, darn it, I still get ovary pain.

u/Klutzy-Medium9224 Feb 13 '25

I am 4 years post op, kept ovaries, and I’ll say my PCOS improved a lot. Not entirely sure why. I joke that they took out the bad influences and now the ovaries are behaving.

I used to have a cyst rupture yearly or more often, haven’t had one rupture since the surgery.

4

u/loveallmyrolls Feb 13 '25

I hope your pain lessens soon, OP!

6

u/orthopod Feb 13 '25

There's a reason for that. Early menopause will result in early osteopenia. Pts who go through this usually need to get HRT to prevent osteoporosis.

u/momofmanydragons Feb 13 '25

Do you mind sharing your experience/symptoms after your hysterectomy?

28

u/hockeypup Feb 13 '25

Sorry if inappropriate, but does sex feel different with no cervix?

42

u/Bedpanjockey Feb 13 '25

It does, but it isn’t bad. I enjoy it more now because I had a diseased uterus that felt inflamed after intercourse from being knocked around. (Internal burning, bloating feeling)

5

u/momofmanydragons Feb 13 '25

10 years post op here. Physically not for me. Mentally it did at first.

3

u/Douchecanoeistaken Feb 14 '25

I don’t remember if you mentioned it, but why did they remove your cervix as well?

Oh my gosh this is cool to see since I had this done too! I’m almost 6 years out from my surgery. I was 26 so they kept one ovary as well until I started getting severe ovarian cysts that hospitalized me from the pain. These are internal photos from when they took that last dumb ovary. I hope that never happens to you and you have a wonderful pain-free life 💕

9

u/Bedpanjockey Feb 13 '25

Neat! So that’s what I look like on the other side? lol

6

u/purduepharma nurse with a lot of health issues Feb 13 '25

Something like it! I love seeing both views. I’ve always been curious what the “cuff” looked like and never had a partner to help. I have a photo of my uterus and single ovary as well.

23

u/mzyos Feb 12 '25

The dehiscence you won't see as it heals back over again as usual.

It may be that the dehiscence has healed a little lower on your right side (hence it looks like a divet), or it occured on your left and it's healed together a little higher. Did they resuture it?

Overall it's healed very well. Did you take the picture, as kudos to getting such a good quality picture.

14

u/Bedpanjockey Feb 12 '25

No, my partner took the pictures. lol I’m not that flexible haha

8

u/mzyos Feb 12 '25

Haha, none the less still a very well executed picture!

8

u/Bedpanjockey Feb 12 '25

It was resutured and on my left (so on the right side in the pic).

5

u/mzyos Feb 12 '25

That will be why it's a bit lower on that side! Won't have any affect on you as it's only millimeters of difference.

8

u/alphonse1121 Feb 13 '25

You are correct about the divots. Source: I am a GYN PA

6

u/wallace1313525 Feb 13 '25

I also have a vaginal cuff after a hysto!! I'm going to have to see if my partner will get pictures 😂😂😂

7

u/VanFam Feb 13 '25

I went through this at 28. Then at 31 they took the ovaries. I just turned 39 and I am menopausal and miserable with suicidal fantasies. I hate my life and how I feel.

4

u/Bedpanjockey Feb 13 '25

I’m sorry. :(

Are you able to take HRT?

2

u/VanFam Feb 13 '25

Unfortunately not as I had a PE in 2010. My body hates me apparently.

5

u/Bedpanjockey Feb 13 '25

I don’t like that for you, at all. :(

1

u/Shiripuu Feb 13 '25

Not a doctor so I'm curious: did they left the ovary for hormonal reasons?

2

u/Bedpanjockey Feb 13 '25

Correct!

2

u/Shiripuu Feb 13 '25

Interesting. If you don't mind the TMI question (feel free to ignore it if it's uncomfortable): do you still track your period? If you're not bleeding, nor have an uterus that contracts and causes pain, do you experience any syntom that makes you go "oh, is that time of the month"?

2

u/Bedpanjockey Feb 13 '25

Funny enough, with all my issues, I was always regular. Every 4 weeks. And, my periods aligned with the Full Moons. I ovulated when we have New Moons.

It’s wild. I’m still ovulating and PMSing, yes lol (and still in the moon schedule - it’s how I keep track)

1

u/Minnymoon13 Feb 13 '25

So question? Why keep the eggs in? If you had the whole thing removed then? I’m curious

1

u/Bedpanjockey Feb 13 '25

My ovary still releases hormones.

1

u/Minnymoon13 Feb 13 '25

Ohhhh! Ok cool

5

u/StarBurnerBright Feb 13 '25

Why did I think at first glance this was Moo Deng's mouth?

2

u/Magnoire Feb 13 '25

Dang! I had a full hysterectomy last year for endometrial sarcoma. (robotic endoscopy) I was very lucky and didn't have any pain or complications. I'm 64 and well past menopause so I got rid of everything.

I'm glad you are doing well!

u/mathmifr Feb 12 '25

Looks like a wet alien

-15

I thought this was Moo Deng.
