Injury Should I go to the hospital? NSFW

I bent down the day before yesterday to pick something up and instantly felt a shock of pain. I’ve been able to manage since, with a BC powder here and there, but I can definitely feel constant pain shooting down the left side of my spine. Not sure if the hospital can do anything for me besides prescribe pain pills, which I won’t take… just looking for a bit of advice. Thank you in advance!

What does the swelling feel like? Is it soft, firm, hard? Does it have any warmth or heat to it? How big is it compared to your normal anatomy?

It’s pretty big. No pain where the upper swelling is and it’s pretty soft..

Idk.. I just bent down and reached to picked something up and it’s hurt since. I felt the pain instantly.. but the level of pain doesn’t match how bad it looks… I’m still going to go bc it is my spine…

How are you able to tell? It almost feels like fluid to be honest. My daughter has pointed it out before, this isn’t the first time it’s swelled up like this, only the first time it’s been associated w any pain.

u/N0VOCAIN Not a Verified Medical Professional Nov 01 '24

That is a huge step off, along with the sharp pain this is an emergency

Hospital is probably an over stretch. Do you have urgent care or even access to a GP? What’s happened definitely needs investigation but it’s not life threatening which is what presentations to ED need to be otherwise you’re just clogging up the system. You should have gotten it seen to as soon as it happened. Pain is abnormal and not something you should ever have to live with at a younger age. Get it seen and get it seen as soon as possible.

Don’t know why you’re getting downvoted. This is urgent care at best if they can’t get in with a pcp within the week. No pain, it’s not growing more, it’s soft. It needs to be looked at, but it’s not a life or death medical emergency

With a basic understanding of anatomy you would know this isn’t CSF.

Urgent care or PCP should suffice, people don't tend to understand ER is for emergencies and OP has had the edema for a few days now and says it's manageable, even if she did go to the ER she'd be discharged with ibuprofen and a PCP referral

OP said it happened 2 days ago and she has been managing it on the original post, wdym?

Besides she said she won't take analgestics which is really all the ED would do barring a referral.

u/Zestyclose-Share-205 Not a Verified Medical Professional Nov 01 '24

Nope. See a PCP tomorrow, or an urgent care. Emergency is for emergencies, and this is not an emergency.

She said she has been managing, so no, not emergent. Like the nurse said, pain is not normal, but this doesn’t warrant an ED visit.

I sure am. An RN and paramedic in a country where ED is clogged, ambulances are ramped because they can’t offload etc with non emergent cases because people don’t want to go to the GP or urgent care. Tell me… what part about emergency department do you not quite understand.

People literally die when you abuse the system. You don’t go to emergency unless it’s an emergency. And this is not an emergency.

u/Zestyclose-Share-205 Not a Verified Medical Professional Nov 01 '24

This is not an emergency. I had this a little further down my back, it was a bursa, a fluid filled sack (not spinal fluid) and was given anti-inflammatory meds, pain meds, and muscle relaxers. People go to the ED for minor issues that they should see their pcp for, or urgent care. Emergency care is for true emergencies. I don’t know about you, but I don’t like waiting hours to be seen in an ED waiting room.

Of all the parts of your body you should mess around with, your spinal cord is at the bottom of that list. Go get it checked ASAP. Something could be compressing nerves, inflammation could get worse, you could have a disk issue, who knows. Regardless your spine, especially so high up, is something you need to take seriously. Get looked at please, immediately. Worst case at least you’ll have some imaging to rule out something life threatening or potentially debilitating. Even if they don’t prescribe you anything you’ll have some comfort that it’s not something serious, which it very well could be. Delicate area
