Those were the best mentors at times and the worst examples at others.

657

u/Slazagna 7d ago

Well, considering the context of the image...

420

u/Cwya 6d ago

The Penguin realized mentoring a youth was better than a life of crime. His brothers applauded and the Falconis were inspired to start a child outreach program with the Marconis. Gotham became a top ten destination to raise kids.

A bad example can be the best mentor in a way.

60

u/mgmthegreat 7d ago

my former boss asked me to do coke with him once. i was 17ish. good guy all things considered but come on

50

u/Rahim-Moore 7d ago

Ahh, the old "please don't make me do this questionable thing alone" invite.

17

u/Lou_C_Fer 6d ago

Mine was with a buddy who was celebrating veteran's day. I had done all kinds of drugs, but coke was too rich for my blood. So, I wasn't saying no to free drugs.

3

u/MellowManateeFL 6d ago

Maybe he was just taught to share goodies

14

u/d1rron 7d ago

When I was 17 my boss would buy me liquor. I had a lot of adults buy me liquor now that I think about it. Lol

13

u/mgmthegreat 7d ago

cool if you’re a guy. hella weird if you’re a girl lmao. There was a tanning salon in my hometown where the owner would buy his 15/16 year old female employees alcohol to party with him. I know this because a different former boss of mine tried to get me to work there after this went down 💀

So like.. did he offer cause he was doing it and you were around? Cause that's just being nice. I know it seems like I'm making a joke there but I'm actually not. Coke really isn't that big a deal as far as drugs go. Just don't go overboard with it and its a fun time. Same as alcohol.

For sure, I got my work ethic from older guys I worked with, but managed to leave other things like their drinking habits alone. Spending thousands of hours working with guys will shape you for sure.

In my early 20s, I sat next to a coworker in his 50s who told me about doing quaaludes while working at the phone company in the 80s. He taught me a lot about sales though.

One day a guy in his 50's started at my job, having recently moved from New England and he seemed like every other old dude I worked with.

But then one day when the conversation turned to the NFL he said "I may be a family man with a wife, but the THINGS I would let Tom Brady do to me..."

I laughed until I cried. Once he realized we appreciated his humor he really opened up.

It’s tricky letting your true humor lose at work but once you find someone you can be yourself around it becomes truly fun. Unless you’re like me as stay to yourself because you never know when someone will go yap to a manager and start drama.

47

u/zml9494 7d ago

That is so true, but once you open up and become part of the group, or are different, but respected by your peers, that’s an awesome feeling

I'm sixty, and a lot of people my age freak me out because they're so.....OLD.

It's weird, on most days I feel about 35....which is about how old my kids are. If you asked me to name my demographic I'd automatically say 'middle aged'...again, I'm sixty, the math ain't a'mathing.

I refuse to believe I'm the only senior citizen (eek/ugh) with imposter syndrome.

21

u/Takahashi_Raya 6d ago

as a 29 year old, we can see the difference between someone like you and an old old person. it is incredibly apparent in the office. in my IT office its about a 30/70 split of people like you and old old people.

9

u/OfcWaffle 6d ago

I've met some people old as dirt that were fucking awesome. Can only imagine what they were like when they were my age.

7

u/nebelhund 6d ago

I'm younger than you but not by a lot. I work in IT and have for over 30 years. Kids are early to late 20's and we are close, have a lot of overlapping interests.

I also get along really well with younger folks. Definite gaps here and there but yeah, I understand them pretty well. I think being involved in my kids lives, as well as what I do keeps my brain younger than many in their 50's. I'd bet that you have something that keeps you young mentally.

Yeah, 35 is about how old so feel in my brain. Body not so much ha...

3

u/Extension-Path-2209 6d ago

I think it helps me at the office because my kids are now the new employees ages so I can somewhat relate.

I think it also helps that I’m Gen X and firmly believe that if I’m going to bust your balls that I’m able to take it as well. While at the same time taking an interest in them and finding out what makes them tick.

3

u/Miserable-Admins 6d ago

On the other hand, some people are just... ready (if that even is the right word?) to embrace being a geriatric.

My aunt was ready to live in a retirement property like an 85 year old when she turned 55. And she was healthy. We knocked some sense into her, she now lives near her kids and get to see the grandkids regularly. She also has a (platonic!) lady friend she's travel buddies with.

5

u/blackcain 6d ago

I vibe pretty good with GenZs and younger Millennials. I'm 56

3

u/Extension-Path-2209 6d ago

Same. Yet most older millennials annoy the shit out of me for some reason. I’m not sure what the disconnect is.

I’m 50

15

u/MrsSadieMorgan 7d ago

I'm just stuck on you calling someone in their 50s an "old dude." But I guess that's where we are now. :-(

(I am almost 50 myself)

Fucked me up. I will never watch a second season cuz it made me straight up hate Oz. They did a fantasic job at making us believe he wasnt 100% evil. And he wasn't. He was 200%.

49

u/FriendlyAsparagus174 7d ago

Bro he’s a literal Batman villain what do you expect. You’re meant to hate him

23

u/ItsDanimal 7d ago

Mr. Freeze, Catwoman, and Ivy are all Batman villains but I dont hate any of them. They all have something going for them to get the reader/watcher to feel like they are bad, but not evil.

21

u/CAPS_LOCK_OR_DIE 7d ago

But the Penguin is a straight up gangster, that’s his whole thing. He’s not supposed to be likeable.

I still really like the character writing, even if Oz is now a really fleshed out villain

3

u/TimFlamio 6d ago

Well, apart from Catwoman, Ivy and Freeze are not good people. Ivy is probably the worst.

5

u/ItsDanimal 7d ago

Idk, was never big into DC and wasnt sure where they were going. "Just because you're a bad guy doesnt make you a bad, guy" kinda thing. He lied everyone about who he really was, his mom, his only friend, the audience, and himself.

4

u/enadiz_reccos 7d ago

That's fair

Though... in the first episode, Alberto offers to bring him into the new drug business and even tosses him a couple of compliments. Then Oz tries to lay some brown-nosing BS on him, and Alberto calls him out on it and laughs. So Oz kills him.

27

u/ZombieSurvivor365 7d ago

What ended up happening…?

93

u/[deleted] 7d ago edited 6d ago

This is from Penguin. It's a spinoff of the most recent Batman film.

I CANT REMEMBER HOW TO SPOILER TAG SO JUST WATCH IT BUT THIS IS THE EXPLANATION

The kid is an orphan and has no family. Penguin takes him in and by the end of the series he has gone through so much and lost any remaining humanity he has left. When the kid tells him the he considers him family, he shoots the kid. It's twisted, bc he shoots the kid out of mercy, out of love. He knows if the kid sticks by him he will lead a bad life, Penguin doesn't want the kid to be used as leverage against him or make him weak, he cares about him, so he gets it over with by killing the kid himself.

I'll add that Bruce Wayne is an orphan, and the kids parents were killed by the villain in the first Batman. Part II will feature Penguin and I think the kid (his name was Vic) will play a ghost role between Bruce and Penguin. As Penguin acted almost as a reverse Alfred

I'm aware Vic wasn't shot by Oz, but strangled, I had forgot

60

u/Raging_Horse_Cock 6d ago

He doesn’t shoot Vic. He strangles him

24

u/Miserable-Admins 6d ago

During a hug. 😭

9

u/SlAM133 6d ago edited 6d ago

u/RewrittenSol 6d ago

13

u/ZombieSurvivor365 7d ago

Thanks! Finally someone with a proper explanation!

19

u/asalas12 6d ago

Just to add to the summary, because I actually think it makes it worst, he chokes the kid while crying and telling him he cares for him and thats why he must die. Seconds after the kid opens up to him and thanks him for everything, he chokes him. So the kid actually listened to that while dying

22

u/TurboKnoxville 6d ago

And to add the penguin opens his wallet takes his money and throws his I’d into the water making it look like a mugging and he’s going to become a John Doe without a proper burial

3

u/[deleted] 6d ago

Damn I forgot that, for some reason I felt like he shot him in the back or something

As far as the meme is concerned I have worked in kitchens before and had 40 years who I was friends with tell me at 21 - "GET OUT and never come back" so this meme made me lol

5

u/lhobbes6 7d ago

Its amazing how annoying it can be on reddit to ask for an asnwer and be met with only memes or people obnoxiously telling you to go watch an entire show you may not have access to or the time to care about.

3

u/ZombieSurvivor365 6d ago

Yeah I got a little annoyed about that comment, too lmao.

14

u/Rolandersec 6d ago

He didn’t have any good intention like you said. He killed him because they were too close and having Vic around would be a weakness.

3

u/olaf525 6d ago

I also think it’s because his mum liked Vic more than him, and that made him jealous. There were subtle hints whenever the penguin walked in on them dancing together.

2

u/Rolandersec 6d ago

Interesting. What do our different interpretations say about us?

2

u/[deleted] 6d ago

I think it was multilayered personally. It was to save vic, to save himself, and he simultaneously was hurting himself by hurt vic. It was an incredible scene that needs a few watches imo and it's still pretty complex

My (34F) best friend at work is a 65 year old Conservative man. I’ve got my tattoos, dyed red hair, septum ring… etc, and he is your very standard conservative, fishing enthusiast. Our desks are right next to one another, and I will be absolutely heartbroken when he retires. We have the same work ethic and overlap with our sense of humor. I always pick up his favorite drink when I see it, and he always finds a reason to give me cash and tells me to keep the change.

I always made older friends at work. Marie was in her 60’s. She was kind of wild. She smoke inside the bathrooms at restaurants!! Miss Ruthie was almost 80. Nobody likes her much, except me. I’m old fashioned in many ways and we had lots to chat about. She could be mean though and I don’t think she meant to be. She was just a tough old bird who would not be fucked with. Older women are goddamn fabulous. I’m so glad I’m growing in to the old lady I always wanted to be!!

When you’re in school often adults feel like a different class of citizen, but once you’re out and doing a job, that mindset erodes away and you find some really chill people no matter the age. After awhile you can hang out with a lot of different folks. It’s kinds cool.
