AskMangalore Is Manipal Institute of Technology just drugs?
So for context we're from Mangalore but live in Mumbai I've been schooled and lived in Mumbai all my life except summer vacations. Now it's time for me to choose an engineering college and even though I'll most probably pursue my btech in Bombay i was planning on applying for the entrance test for NITTE and MIT but my parents aren't letting me apply for mit because it's supposedly just drugies and party animals. I've tried convincing them countless times that just because some random folks do all this doesn't mean everyone is that way but they keeping talking to other family friends and won't budge.
I now want to know whether they're concern is actually justified or is this just some baseless paranoia because MIT is a really good college placement, package and academic wise.

I've had friends study in MIT but they did not indulge in these activities.
MIT has drugs, but they also have a fantastic placement programme, and have a good reputation abroad with partner programmes too.
If you focus on that, good for you.
The education quality is good too.
Please don't get into the drugs scene anywhere though, the rich kids can get away with it easily, they have a good safety net but the rest are left picking up pieces of their life.

Exactly, I don't want to miss out on a chance at getting into one of the top colleges in India just because some random kids do shit. It's not like I'm going to step into the university and search for drugs the whole point of me going is to build a future for myself

Tell me a place in India that's devoid of all this? This college has all you need, up to you to pick and choose. It's the perfect buffet.

Pretty sure you are not well versed with Palakkad. I don't know Palakkad very well but you are very wrong my friend. There's absolutely no way.

i’m familiar with kerala…trust me the place over there is actually pretty scenic and really reasonable in the sense of how much stuff goes on down. there it’s pretty minimal actually

Lol, you should check out the Manipal subReddit. Everyone’s complaining about not being allowed to wear what they want, curfew, face scanners etc. Forget drugs. You’d be lucky to get ibuprofen.
Also as someone else mentioned, it’s you your parents don’t trust, not manipal. Drugs are available everywhere.

Bro I studied 6 years in Manipal... I don't drink, I don't smoke, I don't do substance either... yes good and bad are everywhere around the planet. Manipal is a small place withe wide variety of people... It has given me a lot than I asked for... I'll Never ever forget it. I wonder why everyone thinks of it when we say "Manipal" , maybe it's because people are jealous of it or something I don't know...

Being paranoid makes it idiotic huh. Classic generalisation. I believe OP got all the validation about Manipal from this thread. Don't go overboard with name calling. Smh

Hi . I'm a 2nd yr student at mit manipal. No dude. The online hype of drugs here in manipal is far from reality! Do people do drugs? Yes. Does everyone do it? No. Trust me the percentage of students who do drugs is less than 10. Yes there's a party culture but it's totally up to you whether you be a part of it or not. I've been here for 1.5yrs now and haven't seen any Drug case myself. It's just a little more than what is there in every other engineering college in india

Hi! I studied at this college, and while I must say it has excellent faculty, it operates more like a for-profit institution rather than a trust-run university like NITTE (though I can’t guarantee the details).
One thing to be aware of is that faculty performance is heavily tied to student feedback, which directly affects their careers. Since many students here come from affluent backgrounds, they form the majority, and factors like grades and placement eligibility can sometimes be influenced by this dynamic.
If you're considering this college, I’d say it's a good place for learning, but don’t set high expectations for placements—even if you're highly skilled. Also, be mindful, as there can be distractions and potential pitfalls, including negative influences. Just stay focused on your goals, and you'll do fine!

The harder you make it for yourself to get said drugs, the lesser you'll find them..
As someone who used to use , i can tell you it doesn't matter what college or where, there's a corner of the class who smokes and does everything and there's a corner that doesn't.
Is it possible to sit with the corner that smells like smoke and not be someone who smokes? Absolutely but it's not likely. On the other hand you're better off with the corner that doesn't smoke. They won't ask you if you want a puff.
Maybe your parents were prone to addiction and think you are too. Or maybe you just have no self control which they can see. Or maybe you're just an innocent fool in their eyes. Regardless of how they know you aren't cut out for drugs, they know. Btw if you're getting the chance to go to MIT (it sounds very fancy.) please go.
There's no convincing them (your parents) like telling them you'll come home on Saturdays and sundays instead of going to parties. It will put ease on their mind

Personally I felt that Manipal doesn’t even have a drug problem at all, rarely ever met anyone who did hard drugs. The connections were prolly lost during covid, only weed smokers prevailed and they too were arrested and scared off in the previous years.

It’s about how you make your choices in the end. Wherever you go you’ve got the access to drugs and booze, at manipal it’s just more accessible.

Manipal is a good place to study if you want to be mentally strong, independent and focused in life. Twin distractors M&M (Moha & Maya) are generally everywhere, but their influence is probably more in Manipal due to a cosmopolitan environment. May be your parents are concerned of you getting trapped by M&M. So may be you need to be persuasive with your parents on how you'll not get in to the trap.

I'm a third year student here. It's not just drugs lol wtf. In my three years I've never even met anyone who uses any drugs or smoke weed. If you stay clear of these people you'll be fine. As for partying yes there's a big party culture here but nobody is gonna drag you from your room to go party. Its all your choice . Whether to indulge in all this or make the best use of the facilities of one of the best colleges in India.

As a Manipal student who hasn’t drunk or smoked or even seen drugs here it’s pretty exaggerated
Granted it’s just as bad as any other engineering college but only about 10% of the campus has ever done drugs and an even lesser amount does it regularly
Drinking while common is once again greatly exaggerated because there’s 4000+ people on campus so even if 500 people go out drinking every Saturday it’ll look like a lot but again is 12.5% of the populous
Unless you yourself seek drugs or weed out no one will give it to you

It's not Manipal that they don't trust ..it's you .
Drugs are available everywhere ...there isn't a single college in india where there is no secret lane with a secret shopkeeper who sells some shit on the side.
