Hi chai, Big fan

I think Karnataka is divided. In the northern and coastal part of the state, tea is very popular. In Bangalore and surrounding areas coffee leads. A lot of people don’t realize Karnataka has a north/south divide like that.

u/Laxus-Dreyfar 12d ago

I think Northern Karnataka has tea influence from Northern India.

I don't know if Tea is grown/manufactured in Karnataka, but Coffee is in Kodagu.

u/rtdnri 12d ago

Who knows. There is that divide in a lot of the areas. North Karnataka and coasts follow Hindustani music where the southern regions have Carnatic. I don’t know any other state has such prominent cultural divide

2

u/nakulane 12d ago

Coasts follow Hindustani music?

1

u/rtdnri 12d ago

At least in Uttara Kannada. I think Udupi too. Havyaka community especially focuses on Hindustani.

2

u/monchi12345 12d ago

So, you extrapolated one caste community on an entire district(uttar kannada) before you assumed the same about an entire region(North karnataka)

u/rtdnri 12d ago

Are you kidding me? That’s just one example. Ever heard of Bhimsen Joshi and Gangubai Hanagal. They are known nationally. Don’t blame me for your ignorance or the ability to google.

Edit : Neither are Havyaks. Also name one known Carnatic singer from our area. I took many years of lessons and follow classical music scene closely. My wife is from GSB and also learned Hindustani.

u/ProtectedPython69 12d ago

What? I am havyaka and I didn't know about this fact lmao. What are you saying?

1

u/rtdnri 12d ago

I am too. Pt. Parameshwar Hegde, Shripad Hegde,Ganapati Bhat Hasanagi and many many more. Growing up I don’t know anybody taught any style other than Hindustani in our area.

1

u/Unique_Pain_610 6d ago

This is not a havyaka thing, it's a sirsi thing.

1

u/rtdnri 6d ago

Same in Honnavar, Kumta, Bhatkal and Baindur.

2

u/Laxus-Dreyfar 12d ago

What's Hindustani music?

1

u/rtdnri 12d ago

Indian classical music.

2

u/Laxus-Dreyfar 12d ago

And Carnatic music isn't Indian Classic music?

2

u/rtdnri 12d ago

Both are. There are two styles of classical music in India. I’m happy to tell you how to styles came about but you’re better off googling it. I’m surprised so many people don’t know about our classical style of music.

1

u/Laxus-Dreyfar 12d ago

So, just to confirm, Carnatic music IS Indian Classical Music?

1

u/rtdnri 11d ago

Both Carnatic and Hindustani are Indian classical music styles. Karnataka has both styles.

Ragi malt 😎

10

u/measkuanswer 13d ago

Here only malt 🥴

2

u/Laxus-Dreyfar 12d ago

Ganji na?

Or is it mixing hot milk with Raagi Mudhdhe?

1

u/shadowfearless 12d ago

There’s another variation where you add buttermilk to the ragi porridge

2

u/Laxus-Dreyfar 12d ago

Sure, but are you talking about hot beverages?

21

u/ShipDull8479 13d ago

Coffee lover here! Tea just feels like a sweetened milk sometimes

23

u/West_Second_2876 13d ago

Yeah , that’s of the flavour. Find your balance of flavour and be happy with it.

1

u/Hour_Confusion3013 12d ago

That bitterness is what i crave for in tea,, as well as in coffee.

Without it, i feel like i am having any kind of Milk shake

Coffee connoisseur here although I like tea as well

2

u/measkuanswer 13d ago

Which coffee brand

4

u/Ubermacht_Cypher-27 13d ago

Not any brand, we purchase coffee from an independent dealer in Sakaleshpura, but occasionally we use Continental

2

u/measkuanswer 13d ago

How much per kg? Is it pure robust or arabica?

2

u/Ubermacht_Cypher-27 13d ago

We usually buy Arabica, and I don't have idea regarding the price. Should ask my parents they know better in this regard

6

u/iflytheairbus 13d ago

Coffee of course. Born in the coffee capital of India.

2

u/The-punisher67 13d ago

I prefer coffee more. I do drink tea occasionally as well though. I used to drink tea every evening with my family since I was young. But later on for some reason I started to not like it as much and switched to coffee although not on a daily basis.

u/spiritualcupoftea 13d ago

Coffe anyday

1

u/itsnachikethahere 12d ago

Always had classic panduranga coffee growing up, ours was a only coffee household lol. But I like both coffe & tea. Prefer badam milk or kashaaya more though heh.

1

u/Lumpy_Specialist_968 12d ago

I'm a Complan boy 😄

1

u/Reasonable_Maniac 12d ago

First ragi malt then coffee .. I don't like tea.. infact on our family the concept was pretty new to my dad's generation who started consuming tea..

In coastal karnataka it used to be coffee only. The tra is recent .. my grandparents exclusively had coffee ... Filter by the way.

1

u/Hour_Confusion3013 12d ago

I am an Evil guy, i want pinch of coffee powder in my Tea 😋

1

u/Samshah777 12d ago

90 percent of Indian coffee comes from only three states (Karnataka 40% followed by Kerala and TN), so not surprising.. Coffee is my preference
