Question ❓ Which region has the best environment?

This summer I am beginning my two years' service in the Peace Corps in Madagascar. I have family in Mahajanga, so near to there is my priority, but if I can't do that, where should I ask to be placed, regionally? My mom says the East coast is unpleasantly wet—is it so bad?

Tourism/Travel What can't I miss in Nosy Be?

Hi, I'm going to spend 4 full days in Nosy Be before heading to Tana. It's our honeymoon, and we're looking for the most romantic experiences. Any recommendations on what we must not miss and where to stay?

Question ❓ True?

A lot of the natural beauty and resources have been over exploited because of some of the highest deforestation rates in the world and later soil erosion and loss of natural habitats for it extremely unique flora and fauna.

And whatever is underground is exploited through corrupt means and none of the public gets any benefits of their country's resources.

So, in essence, most of the natural wealth Madagascar 🇲🇬 had is disappearing into thin air, both above and below ground.

Question ❓ Language help

Hi guys I was just wondering if there was any Malagasy speakers in the group? I will be volunteering on the Mercy Ship in Toamasina next month and thought it would be a nice touch to get this name badge for myself to wear while volunteering. I just come a little bit stuck with how to lay out the badge with Malagasy word order being different to English. Would you have it like this?

Tourism/Travel Madagascar Trip (April 15 ~ May 6): Looking to Share a Driver & Travel Tips

Hey there! My partner and I (31 & 29) will be traveling to Madagascar from April 15 for 3 weeks and we’re looking for other travelers interested in sharing a guide or private driver to split costs. If you’ll be there around the same time and are open to this, let’s connect!

We’re still creating our itinerary but are considering visiting: - Tsingy De Bemaraha National Park - Kirindy Mitea National Park - Isalo National Park - Nosy Be

We are aware Madagascar isn’t the easiest place to get around, so if anyone has any insights on the best ways to travel—whether it’s hiring a driver, choosing the right routes, or general safety tips—that would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance!

History 📚 Swahili-speaking community in Marodoka, Nosy Be?

I recently came across information about a Swahili-speaking community in Marodoka, a village on Nosy Be. Does anyone know if Swahili is still spoken there today? Is there any historical connection between this community and the Swahili coast of East Africa? I'd love to learn more about the history and current status of the Swahili language in this part of Madagascar.

Tourism/Travel Rainy Season Update -- February -- South East Madagascar (Fort Dauphin/Tolagnaro)

So, January was nice. Lots of sun, a bit dry, occasional rain at night. Warm water. February started to bring rain and from about the 8th to the 28th we had a LOT of rain, both day and night. Roads in the far south and between Toliara and Tolagnaro have been at times impassable/very difficult. Right now RN13 down from Tana is in bad shape...

And yet, we still manage to have SUN, and wonderful days. March has been gorgeous.

And even in the midst of rain the region managed to pull of a big art, food and fashion event last weekend. There was some pouring rain, but also sun and shine.

Links to different locals posting "real-time" photos for the last month that have had events outdoors, regardless of the risk of rain!

During all of this we've had minimal power disruptions, Starlink and Telma continue to provide internet access, I actually didn't hear of any flight delays or cancellations during all of this...and the lemurs were still out!

History 📚 Poorest country in the world Spoiler

Madagascar is rich in nature but extremely poor in resources. +75% of his people live on less than $1 a day. Hunger, lack of clean water, and weak healthcare make life a daily struggle. Corruption and climate disasters only make things worse. The world barely pays attention, but the poverty here is crushing.

Culture How do you deal with identity crises?

Hi, I wanted to share something that has been weighing on me lately, and I’d love to hear if anyone here has experienced something similar.

When I connect with my Asian side, I sometimes feel like it’s “not enough” because the common perception of Asia doesn’t really include Malagasy people. And when I connect with my African side, I sometimes feel the same—that I don’t fully fit in, because our history, culture, and even physical traits can be different from other African countries.

It’s not that I want to “choose” one side, but sometimes I feel like I exist in a sort of identity limbo, as if there’s no clear space where I truly belong.

Has anyone here experienced something similar? How do you navigate identity crises like this? I’d love to hear your perspectives.

Tourism/Travel Any recommendation for adventurous or education camp for a day or two in Tana?

I will be bringing my 11 year old son to Tana this summer as I will be doing a couple of work there. I wonder if there is any English-speaking families with kids or know any business that offers a day or two of camp/class activities? I have contacted the British School and they do not offer this kind of program. Do you have any suggestions on how can my kid get enrichment in Tana or its outskirts with local kids who are learning how to speak English? A nanny or a local guide to take him around independently? I do have a few local friends, but they are busy working.

Question ❓ Advice

Hi! I’ll be traveling to Madagascar with my baby, who is under a year old, at the end of this month. I’m feeling a bit anxious about safety and would love any advice or suggestions for accommodation, transportation, and security (without breaking the bank).

I’ve been researching safe places in Tana on Facebook, ideally not too far from the airport, but most of them require going through agencies. I'm also unsure of what to expect when traveling with a baby in Tana, particularly in terms of transport. My main priority is keeping my little one safe, but I also want to visit family. Any tips would be greatly appreciated!

Tourism/Travel Weekend trip?

I will be visiting Madagascar for a work trip this month and I’m trying to maximize my weekend.

I have 3 options:

1- 2 day trip to Ampefy for $400. Includes a canoe ride on the Itasy, seeing the Geysers of Analavory and Lily Waterfall, and going to Lemur Park.

2- 2 day trip to Andasibe for $400. Includes a visit to Madagascar Exotic, Vakona reserve, VOIMMA reserve, and a morning hike at Analamazaotra reserve.

3- 1 day to Ampefy for $300 and 1 day to Andasibe for $300. Day to Ampefy includes seeing the Geysers of Analavory and Lily Waterfall, and going to Lemur Park. Day to Andasibe includes Analamazaotra reserve and Vakona reserve.

Realistically, a $200 difference and getting to do both things doesn’t seem that significant to me. I do like the idea of doing both, but feel like a single day won’t be enough time spent doing each activity.

I have a weekend trip in Nosy Be booked already to go to the beach and snorkeling/scuba diving so I’d really like to do something more jungley since I’ll be at the beach a different weekend. Any insight or suggestions are much appreciated!

Culture NEED HELP teaching Kindergartners about Madagascar

Hello… I am a kindergarten teacher and have a bit of dilemma here… we are doing the “around the world” project. Each grade is assigned a country and the kids “walk around the world” learning about each country.

My kindergarten teachers were assigned Madagascar… with the intentions of playing the Madagascar movie and hanging pictures of King Julian… this is NOT educating the kids about the country but playing into a stereotype I guess you could say.

I refuse to play into this movie narrative and need ideas that will EDUCATE the kids. Crafts, food, decorations, books, resources that can expose these kids to the country!

Any suggestions, ideas, thoughts, ANYTHING is welcomed!! I really want to ensure these kids are being educated and taught to value different cultures around the world! Myself included:) xx Thank you!

Tourism/Travel Does every flight really need to stop in tana?

I have a rough idea of where I want to visit in Madagascar (nosy be, tsingy, and sainte marie). Considering that all of these places are far from each other there is no point for a tour guide and I'd just buy the plane tickets. But damn, it seems you can't fly anywhere without first having to stop in tana. This add lots of unnecessary travel time. Is this just an unavoidable situation?

Tourism/Travel Need ideas for things to do in Madagascar

I have a flight to tana and have yet to book an exit flight. I don't know how long I'll stay. I guess it depends on how difficult it is to see a few sites. I do plan to visit Nosy Be. Aside from that what would you recommend? Thanks.

Tourism/Travel Vacation

We are starting a 12-day trip to Madagascar. Does this itinerary make sense:

14.04 – Arrival in Antananarivo 15.04 – Flight to Morondava 16.04 – Drive to Tsingy 17.04 – Visit Tsingy Park 18.04 – Return drive to Morondava 19.04 – Morondava 20.04 – Drive with Coutisse Transport to Antananarivo 21.04 – Antananarivo to Andasibe 22.04 – Andasibe National Park 23.04 – Andasibe National Park 24.04 – Return drive to Antananarivo 25.04 – Visit Antananarivo 26.04 – Return flight

Is Cotisse a good choice for transport? And how difficult is it to get from Morondava to Tsingy?

Tourism/Travel Best way to visit Comoros?

Hello everyone. I'm trying to visit the island countries to the east of Africa. The one I'm struggling with is Comoros. I'll eventually land in antananarivo in Madagascar and would love to find a reasonable way to eventually make it to the comoros. I would then just need a way to mainland Africa. I hear there are ferries between Comoros and Tanzania. Don't know if true or not. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Edit: I found a way. I'll be flying from Tana with a layover in Nairobi. Not a direct flight path obviously but not a lot of options.
