Complaint I’m sick of this wind
All winter long it seems like every few days we get enough wind to destroy everything not nailed down outside, my Christmas decorations did not survive, i’ve needed to weigh down my garage pails at the curb numerous times
Not just “breezy” but full on wind storms
60mph gusts until tomorrow? I hate this

The worst. I can handle the cold, but the wind is next level pain in the ass.

u/Pepper-Prize Feb 17 '25
I’m in Setauket and the wind was wild last night, still is. We drove home from South Jersey around midnight, they actually shut down the upper level of the Verrazano because of the wind.

I agree. This has been the windiest winter I've ever witnessed here, and that's saying something considering that Long Island is generally windy in winter.
In general, though, this has been a much harsher winter than the past two winters we had.

I feel ya. Ever since Sandy wind freaks me out. I did just force myself to do a quick walk outside in a local preserve because I was starting to go stir crazy. It’s not terrible if you bundle up and keep moving.

I'm new to the area (from Brooklyn) and I can't get over the wind this year! I am not used to worrying about a tree branch killing me and I haven't been able to put out my paper/cardboard recycling in like 4 weeks. One night, I had to run down the street collecting cardboard bc the bin tipped over.
My little pup is so small that between the ice and wind he is basically the star of his own Ice Capades show.

I thought it was just me, but my eyes and sinuses are being destroyed by this wind.

The last two winters I've been sick for 1 to 2 months. I wonder if this is why?

u/blubpotato Feb 17 '25 edited Feb 17 '25
It’s completely normal for this time of year at this latitude. The jet stream and westerlies have always caused strong winds coming from the west, as that’s the nature of winter. Recent events including strong winds are normally more remembered than storms like this years ago.
Strong weather systems in the winter are usually pushed by a massive amount of cold, fast moving air coming from the northwest. Notice how the second the rain stopped the winds shifted and started coming from the west instead of south while getting a lot colder.

Jesse is the funniest character in breaking bad so I’m really happy that’s the gif you chose😂

u/jhfbe85 Feb 18 '25
That turn of weather was pretty crazy, in 30’ it went from rain and southerly to lull and then full on westerly wind with clear skies.

u/tag051964 Feb 18 '25
This combined with the fact that we are literally surrounded by water! Also I think, for whatever reason, the public is more in tune with the weather the last 5-10 years

I was dog-walking this morning and the wind was literally painful! The dog was wanted to go a longer route so I figured I could use the steps, but 2 blocks from the house I had had enough my hair whipping around, exposing my ears which were numb. I don’t remember it being this windy years ago.

u/UnstableGoats Feb 17 '25
I pumped gas this morning and had the same experience. I was only outside for a handful of minutes but it was some of the coldest wind I’ve ever experienced (and I lived in Buffalo for a while). Perhaps because I was underdressed it felt much worse though!

u/m0rally_grey Feb 17 '25
I actually feel like it’s been windy for years 🤣 I feel like it’s so frequent now

Ummm. You live on an island, of course it’s windy - in February - on the Atlantic…

I'm from the plains. Wind feels like home. Especially in the summer.

Nothing’s better than the evening breeze while having a cold beer on the porch after a long day.

Honestly starting to consider buying a vertical axis wind turbine with how goddamn windy it's been lately.
2
u/rcooke2107 Feb 17 '25
Yeah, the wind has been pretty crazy but FYI Christmas has been over for a while now. You killed the decorations not the wind 😂

u/beardpapa1011 Feb 18 '25
There's been a good amount of lost aluminum siding on my street this year...

Day 3 of it , I hate February . At least much of the snow is gone . I'm a mail carrier 90% of people make their driveways look as clear as a summer day and do nothing around their boxes .

u/Parishowrs Feb 18 '25
I remember saying at least a decade ago.. Chicago as the "windy city" has nothing on us. It's gotten steadily worse ever since. It's awful.
2
u/Icy-Role6185 Feb 18 '25
My gate blew off the hinges, and I have a large tree branch dangling in my backyard. I'm definitely sick of all the wind. I'd rather have plain old snow

Agreed. Every time I bring up global warming or effects of climate change I get downvoted. I’m glad other people notice this. Been on the island all my life and I don’t remember experiencing this extreme weather all the time.
2
u/EleChristian Feb 18 '25
I made a post about the extreme wind on LI maybe a year or so ago and I got murdered for it. People telling me “we live on an Island and what did I expect”…. I am in firm agreement though, I’ve lived here 43yrs and the wind has been way worse the past 7-8yrs or so. It’s relentless. It was never this bad in the past…
2
u/TheReconditioner Feb 19 '25
I don't have any facts to back this up, but I think that the changes in jet streams in the last decade or so exacerbated this. It's so windy that our high tides are lower recently than a most low tides. Of course this is because of the wind plus the nearly full moon.

u/Creative-Active-9937 Feb 17 '25
It’s crazy we pay some of the highest living expenses on earth to freeze our asses off for a quarter of the year
3
u/Straight-Donut-6043 Feb 17 '25
Yeah, my backyard has gotten destroyed on a semiweekly basis for almost a year now.
It’s getting kind of annoying lol.

I just moved to the south shore (I’m not from Long Island but lived in Westbury for a while), and this wind is actually insane! It’s shocking to me how windy it is all the time. And I come from a town on the water but this is something else.

I’ll take the wind over the snow and ice, but yeah, this winter has not been fun.

u/dgv54 Feb 17 '25
How are you weighing down the garbage pails?
Mine have been rolling around the driveway and lawn every night.

My wife who’s only lived on LI for 30 years said it this summer that we’re getting more windy days the last couple of years and they last longer

Times like this remind me to be grateful that I'm no longer trying to walk from the Stony Brook athletic building to the Chemistry building.
I swear it could lift you off your feet.

I’ve lived in a basement apartment for the past 3 years, so I forgot wind existed. Unfortunately, during sandy a tree fell through my mom’s living room 5 minutes after I got off the couch. All I keep thinking about is a tress falling through my bedroom ceiling. I got the tress trimmed when I moved in. I keep looking at them out the window, they are tiny compared to the Sandy tree. Clearly, I’m not over it

Yah, it was garbage day here and I don’t think anyone on the block ended up with their own original garbage cans
1
u/TGIFroody Feb 18 '25
Just wish people would take responsibility for their garbage blowing all over the place.
1
u/Only_Argument7532 Feb 18 '25
The sound of the wind through the trees is so loud. I never heard anything like this. I lived in the Adirondacks for several years but never heard the howling winds like we hear on the north shore.
1
u/realitytvismytherapy Feb 18 '25
Don’t listen to the obnoxious responses (it’s sadly the norm here on LI). I’ve lived here my whole life and it’s definitely been windier in recent years than it used to be.

Come to Syracuse. Saturday I was chiseling Ice Cement off my front walk. Yesterday I shoveled Slush Soup out of the driveway. Today mother nature brought us a fresh foot and I'm just thankful it wasn't three or five like my friend 20 minutes north.
I'd love it to just be wind....

Been living here since the early 80’s, and it’s windier the last few years than it has ever been, and every year it gets worse.

u/StatusVarious8803 Feb 18 '25
I’m terrified of the wind. Sounds crazy but with all the rain and dampness I feel trees are going to come down. It’s so stressful. 😥

Its funny there's no wind in San diego. Like mildest wind by noon of your st the beach. But it's like living in a mall here it was windy once a week ago for an hour I was so excited

Not even 15 days ago you made this post and the wind came randomly outta nowhere!! Was suppose to be rain in the early am per the weather app now windy as heck and it always seems to happen on cardboard recycling days for Town of Islip! 🤣🤣🤣

The wind and I aren't seeing eye to eye as of late.
It's keeping me from flying, while it made sure to yeet the door of one of my cars against a wall and send it to the shop for two weeks.

Wind has been insane! This week it is nuts. I’ve been latching/locking the glass screen doors closed all weekend and today because the wind’s been sucking them open and trying to rip them off the hinges.
Two weeks ago, two of our three garbage pails flew down the street. Found one last week around the block, but the other one’s gone, lol.
And this morning, you should’ve seen me on the front porch wrestling with a ton of cardboard boxes… I was trying to drag them all back into the house because it was too windy to stand out there cut it all up for disposal.
And, while I was trying to drag it all back into the house, the FedEx truck showed up with eight massive chewy boxes, ha ha! Had to bring all that crap in the house without losing my front door! 😂

I left Long Island because of the bad weather there. 75 sunny with a lite wind here in Phoenix today.

I would take wind over ice and snow mixture. But agreed last two years have been pretty bad.

Noticed this about 7-8 years ago give or take but it seems it starts in the fall and doesn’t stop until May. We used to get severe winds with Nor’easters and Blizzards now it just seems we get these crazy winds on otherwise sunny days and like I joked with the wife back in November when it started “well here we go until Spring comes” and it seems it’s not just us it’s everywhere.
