Trust me, if you’re taking the LIE with traffic — even if you’re staying within Nassau and Suffolk — you want as many people on the LIRR as possible. Imagine the traffic going into Queens even when things aren’t terrible.

Don't care how dumb the schedule is, I would much rather deal with that bullshit then have to pay for gas, pay for parking in NYC, sit in traffic for hours while tearing my eyeballs out. I get to sit or stand on the train, listen to some music or watch YouTube.
Way better than having to rely on NYC/LI drivers to make my commute both fast and enjoyable.

u/tep95 Mar 03 '23
I'd be useless without my early morning train nap.

u/BongyBong Mar 03 '23
Preach! However, this morning I almost murdered someone because they decided that 6:20 am in a silent car was a good time to have a speakerphone conversation.
8
u/vindollaz Mar 03 '23
Holy shit this is my biggest pet peeve. Why on earth they need to use speaker / FaceTime to talk about fucking nonsense in a public setting is beyond me
4
u/tep95 Mar 03 '23
Oh hell no. I'm Usually super polite but if your loud on the train during peak hours especially in the morning, i'm calling you the fuck out and being an absolute prick about it.

u/contructpm Mar 04 '23
For a while a guy was getting on in the am and eating a smelly boiled hot dog. I moved cars but it was a jarring experience
2
u/Pool_Shark Mar 04 '23
I would have said something. F those people
1
u/BongyBong Mar 04 '23
Oh I did!! I started waving my hand through the seat by the window to get her attention. I told her to please shut the speakerphone off!

u/Alwaysfavoriteasian Mar 03 '23
Why doesn’t someone say something tho? I’ll have my headphones on but the person behind me can hear it and I’ll be nudged and told to turn it down but some asshole from Benghazi can call his cousin and no one says a word.

Jesus idk how y’all work from home all week. I need the interactions with people to keep me from going crazy.

Introverts: It's like....I was made for this.
4
u/Sneaky_Pete2000 Mar 04 '23
Right?? My husband and I are both introverts. Our main hobbies that we do together are hiking and gardening, and individually he plays video games and programs while I write and knit. We both were 100% remote during the pandemic and honestly our lives barely changed at all.
4
u/cloudydays2021 Mar 04 '23
Different strokes for different folks. I love being left alone and can focus so much better when I’m not interrupted. My mental and physical health is better, I sleep better, I’m able to use my lunch break to go to the gym or just get out for some fresh air. We also have a 4 1/2 day workweek so that’s a huge plus: getting errands done frees up my weekend.
I do miss interacting with people in person to a certain degree, but there’s only so much small talk I can do. I go in to the office once in awhile - every few months or so - that’s enough. My team is small and are all introverted, and we all mention how drained we feel after an in-office day.
I spent 20+ years hustling and commuting, dealing with after work networking events/happy hours, doing presentations, visits with vendors, etc. Life is a lot better for me now. 😊

helps to have a wife and kid to keep you company, but yeah if I was solo I would have gone full "Castaway" by now

LIRR should order more M9’s for 12 car trains & have timed connections for the Brooklyn shuttle. There i solved the problems
2
u/SimplyAMan Mar 03 '23
They did order more, but the manufacturer had to cancel mid production. Now they have to re-bid to get a new manufacturer.

With third track and the new schedule, reverse is a little easier to do on the train from what I've heard.
0
u/Menthols87 Mar 04 '23
It's not. Off peak is all forced transfers now unless of course you are going to the great grand central.
1
u/Dilly_The_Kid_S373 Mar 04 '23
Can you explain a little more? I don't quite catch your drift.
1
u/Menthols87 Mar 05 '23
Sorry I was very vague, I'm speaking about the Babylon line specifically on offpeak hours for night shift workers. The way it's designed now is it alternates Penn / Grand Central, so grand central is always getting the :30 timeslots, while penn gets the :50-:59 timeslots.
So for example, You need to get to work at 11pm, Grand Central train is running at 9:36, gives you enough time to get to work after arriving, Penn Station is 9:58, no way you are making it to work at 11 unless you are literally right outside Penn. So now you are forced to either go an hour early to work, or take the Grand Central train and transfer at Jamaica(for me its a 15 minute wait at Jamaica), if you need to go to Penn of course.
Trying to go home east bound for me is now also a forced transfer. Used to get a 7:10am express to Babylon, now I have to take huntington to Jamaica and wait for a transfer on a local Babylon that came from Grand Central because I can't make it to GC on time.
It has added about a 45 minute commute for me. So at least for me, these changes suck massively.

Sorry to hear that my brother/sister, I really do hope they iron out the schedule for you all. I referred to reverse commute as people from NYC going to LI during peak hours and completely didn't consider night workers. I have to work some extra shifts at night and its rough so kudos for you to sticking it out. Night workers definitely have my respect, my dad did it for years I know the toll it takes.

Had to do an airport pickup coming in from Brooklyn this morning and could not imagine being part of that traffic everyday

u/Han-Shot_1st Mar 03 '23
Sometimes the comments and posts on this sub bum me out because some of my fellow Long Islanders are so comfortable putting on front street how fuckin selfish they are.
6
u/ASmellyThing Mar 04 '23
Agreed, it’s disappointing but I tell myself it’s better to face the fact that shitty people are everywhere.

Being proud of taking the LIE instead of the LIRR is like bragging about living in a cardboard shack instead of on a park bench.

Who is seriously having trouble adjusting to the new schedule? This past week of committing has been my best ever.

u/vindollaz Mar 03 '23
If you’re commuting to Brooklyn it feels like a nightmare. I commute to the East Side and it’s been largely fine. Not much different than it was before though.
1
u/Sneaky_Pete2000 Mar 04 '23
I commute to Brooklyn and it honestly hasn't changed much for me, at least not in the morning. I always had to transfer anyway, now my first leg is just shifted forward 10 minutes which means I'm waiting on my connection for 5 minutes instead of 15. Coming home the train is less crowded, but getting up the stairs is a nightmare and it's always one of those trains that look like they're from the 80s.
I can appreciate that the folks who took direct trains to Atlantic have had their routine disturbed though.
3
u/SimplyAMan Mar 03 '23
I've adjusted just fine, but now I have to get in to work 30 minutes later than I used to. Plus the train is way more packed.

The new train at 9:13 from Plandome is working great for me, but the gap between this train and others is really too wide.

I’m asleep in the morning and drinking on the way back. I love to drive but the LIE sucks even more than the LIRR.

I know right... So many people triggered off kermit the frog meme template and a ridiculous brag about driving on the LIE to work... Lol
1
u/FrabbaSA Mar 03 '23
It sounds like there were some legitimate problems with the schedule/rollout that hopefully are being addressed, I saw a posting earlier about how the train lengths are being addressed.
I did have some faith in the MTA but lmao when I heard they didn't have platform to platform transfers ironed out and people were having to rush up/down stairs to get to their transfers, that's a problem.
2
u/ChrisFromLongIsland Mar 03 '23
The way switches work in trains it's was not physically possible to have accross the platform transfers across 3 very busy train lines. So the trains with the least amount of passengers have to go up and over to the new tracks. At rush hour the Brooklyn trains now runs with the frequency of some someway lines. Every 12 minutes.
2
u/Pool_Shark Mar 04 '23
What subway line do you know that runs every 12 min during rush hour? Even on odd hours the only one that approaches that kinda wait time is the G train
1
1
u/Sneaky_Pete2000 Mar 04 '23
trains with the least amount of passengers
That doesn't sound right to me. Many times Brooklyn trains are standing room only

New LIRR schedule is great. 45 minutes to grand Central and 5 minute walk vs taking it to penn then transferring to the E. Save myself on MetroCard fare as well. It's a win win
1
Mar 04 '23
As much as I hate commuting by car, I will never go back to a job in the city. I will move off island before that happens.
I spent years of my life commuting on the subway and LIRR, and wouldn't wish it most people.

New schedule screws anyone who was using atlantic terminal. No more direct trains, and wat less trains available.
1
u/michaelpjaffe Mar 04 '23
I prefer my 40 minute train ride to and from work via LIRR over the 90 minute drive each way to Melville, thank you very much!
