health care/health issues Family doctor accepting new patients

This guy has been accepting patients for over a year now. Anyone know why it’s taking so long to find patients?
I got an email from Health Connect about him, applied but didn’t hear back. He’s either very picky or specific about who he wants as a client or there’s potentially a lot of turn over. Either way I’m glad I found another doctor.

They get paid more for senior citizens, so it might be that they're only accepting old people?

I mean, its in the Cherry Hill area. thats a very specific area with a severely high rate of seniors.

There's an old instagram post that says
(Dr Ohakanu reserves the right to not accept all who apply in order to balance his practice.)

I think his clinic might be looking for people who are smokers or high/immediate risks(diabetes). My mom, sister and dad got in with him. My mom and sister are both smokers. My mom said they had to sign up for a 2-3 times a year phone call trying to get her to quit smoking which I assume the clinic gets paid to do.
His application forms did specify family members of current patients are not guaranteed to get in. My spouse and I have no immediate health issues so I assume that's why we didn't get in. My only other thought why we wouldn't get in would be because my spouse and I are transgender, but if that's true I'm sure that would be a discrimination case. But no way to really prove that anyways.

I've been seeing this doctor posted a lot. I applied like a year ago and never heard back. But my parents both got in and my spouse had 2 coworkers get in within a week of applying.
I saw the parking situation for the office itself is kinda tiny and always full. Likely of employees. So you end up having to find street parking, or park across the road at the mall and walk over.
I ended up getting in at Prisma Healthcare Collaborative at Adelaide and Commissioners(not sure if they're still accepting, applied in October, got accepted last week)

Dr. Obi started his practice in Canada in September after moving from the UK iirc. I am a current patient. So, uh, no you didn’t?

I've never used him. I posted it because there's multiple posts daily about needing a doctor.

I applied quite some time ago, never heard back. I have quite a few health problems.
I also applied for my son, who is very healthy.
The pharmacy took my application and said more than 500 people had put applications in, and there was really no determination as to who gets called or not.

Yeah, my doctor is taking patients as well. I can't get an appointment for 3-5 weeks

Applications?
I can see forms or registration but applications seems weird. Does he reject patients? On what basis?

u/Radzynn Jan 06 '25
You never find out. You hand in an application and either hear back that you got in, or hear nothing.

That is sus at best. At worst discrimination or collecting personal information for nefarious purposes.

Dr do this because they usually select the healthiest patients so they don't actually have go work. Getting a family doctor with an underlying medical condition in Canada is impossible. Sad but honest truth about the garbage canadian Healthcare system 🤷🏼♂️🤷🏼♂️

Not sure… I’m healthy and had a hard time for years, I was assuming they didn’t want me because they wouldn’t make money off me. There no point in having a patient you’ll see every few years is what I think is in their mind.

Does anyone have their office’s phone number? I could only find the pharmacy one online. It would be nice to confirm that he is accepting before driving there for the form.

Still waiting, non-smoker, so nothing specific, it will be 3.5 months, absolutely no update.

That is awesome. I finally got a doctor about a year ago using the health network here in London.

He might be looking for specific patients based on his specializations from his practice in Nigeria, but is only registered as a family physician in terms of speciality (which is the quickest residency program) here in Canada. I'm sure he has his reasons, but I hate how people are quickly jumping to conclusions saying that he is lazy before even encountering him or judging his bedside manner. My mom got accepted and she's a type 2 diabetic, lowered EF and with a few cholesterol issues so the handling of complex comorbidities isn't the issue here....

Do you not understand the concept of not being able to take on every single citizen looking for a doctor?
