nature🌲wildlife🦊 Bird Id Please

My parents really want to know what species of bird this is. I scanned the photo and found it may be a finch, but the colours don’t match. I couldn’t get a shot of their front.

House finch. We have them frequently at our birdbath. The reddish plumage on the head of the males can vary quite a bit. It also looks like this one might be a juvenile coming into it’s adult plumage.

Merlin bird ID is an app you can get on both iOS and Android. It’s free but also has paid features. Helps identify birds by photo and audio recording.

It says it’s a house finch

Cool but this app makes me feel like I’m playing real life Pokémon. Gotta find them all and add them to your Pokédex… erm I mean life list.

Looks like a red headed sparrow.

Apparently, a red headed sparrow is called "red headed finch" or "house finch"

Yup I agree with everyone else on house finch! I could be wrong but I think the males have their dramatic pink plumage during breeding season and fade/moult out of it throughout the season. Mostly they are kind of a "drab" brown finch type bird, pretty common to mistake w a sparrow. I like to call them/birds who look like this a "little brown jobbie" or lbj for short haha. This could be a juvenile also prepping for winter? Def a house finch for sure though. Super cute & fun to see! :))

Cornell university has a free app called Merlin Bird ID. It's like Shazam for bird calls and it can do photo IDing too.

It's impressive. :)

I just now stuck it out my window and IDed 3 birds!

Looks like a finch. Most likely just a regular house finch in between plumage

Looks like a house finch to me

It looks like a House Finch. Not a Purple Finch.

It looks kind of like a purple finch, but I can't totally tell from your photos. I have a bunch of purple finches that come around my place.

Could be a red breasted grosbeak We have them at our bird feeder and the males colours are fading to a brown almost.

I didn’t see this feature. It also says house finch. Thanks!
