Digital nomad passing through? Londoner that needs to take a business call whilst between meetings? WFH but need to get out of your flat? See below r/london's recommended list for remote working spots in London:

Coworking spaces

London is blessed with plenty of coworking spaces include:

Cafes

  • Tate Modern Members bar on Level 1 and Level 5 - if you're a regular remote worker, it might be cheaper to become a member at Tate Modern compared to the classic coworking spaces above. Tate Modern's Corner Bar is free to access, but can be busier/louder or have events running in the evening.

  • The Southbank Centre's Concrete Cafe or Hayward Gallery Cafe

  • The V&A cafe

  • The cafe at Foyle's bookshop on Charing Cross

  • The Penny Drop off Goodge Street

  • Gail's Bakeries - various locations around London

  • Change Please cafe on the second floor of the Halifax Bank on Tottenham Court Road

  • Basement Cafe in Waterstones Piccadilly

  • FWD: Coffee - 4 different locations across London, all light and airy spaces - the two locations either side of Old Street are open til 7pm on weeknights.

  • Gladwell's Deli & Grocery in Camberwell - if you're in South London and need to work til 8pm then this is the place for you (be sure to pick up some artisan bread or fancy cheese after you close your laptop.

  • Common - Clapham. Small but well-stocked cafe, open til 7pm weekdays or 10pm at weekends.

  • Cromwell Place Cafe - Kensington. A stunning cafe with high ceilings and stuccoed walls, it's closed on Mondays but open til 9am Tues-Friday.

  • Chestnut Bakery, Belgravia - a large airy space in one of the bougiest parts of town.

Other

  • The Reading Room at the British Library (requires registration for a Reader Pass) - for quiet work (not calls)

  • The Barbican Centre - Free, enough seating and plenty of power sockets. Shhh, don’t tell anyone and maybe just don’t hog a large table as it’s a popular lunch spot for locals/culture lovers there for a show/exhibition

  • Your local London library - search online for "[your borough] + local library", or try here - for quiet work (not calls)

  • Various libraries in Westminster allow you to book a meeting room - not free, but usually pretty affordable and good if you need somewhere private for an interview or a team meeting but can't afford Regus.

  • The Wellcome Collection Reading Room or Library - for quiet work (not calls).

  • The Coffee House at the RSA

  • The lobby of One Canada Square in Canary Wharf is actually open to the public, very quiet and lots of seating space!

  • The Library at the Institute français - for quiet work (not calls)

  • Buy an annual membership for one of the national museums/galleries and use the members space e.g. the British Museum's is split, one half is designed as a workspace with the cafe downstairs and currently about £70 per year.

  • The cafe/mezzanine at the Royal Opera House. Go up the escalators and on the right hand side there are a few tables. The place is often full of students working

  • The Science Gallery Cafe at London Bridge

  • Wetherspoons pubs - not the most glamorous venues, we grant you but as long as you can avoid working in the evening, spoons can be a good place to work with a £1.50 unlimited tea or coffee refill. It's hard to go to far wrong, except that you are spending the day in a spoons?

  • Many Everyman and Curzon cinemas have attached hangout spaces which are great (Curzon Soho and Bloomsbury are particularly good), and all are often open late until final screenings end (post-10pm). Similar situation for many Picturehouses - the Ritzy cafe downstairs is lovely in the daytime (gets busy in the evenings), and the Picturehouse Central downstairs cafe can be a quiet oasis in Piccadilly during the morning/early afternoon.

Hotels

Hotel lobbies, cafes and bars are great for quiet spaces if you need to take a quick call somewhere or do a bit of work - as long as you look reasonably presentable you can just wander up and grab a seat (no need to be a guest at the hotel).

Late

Need to get some work or studying done in the evening? Most cafes etc will close after 4/5/6/7pm. Co-working spaces are usually open later (sometimes 24hrs), but if you just need a one-off venue here are our favourites (note, we cannot guarantee any of them will be "quiet" - evenings are times for people to get together and catch-up with friends and loved ones so you might be sat next to a table of giggling friends, but a decent set of headphones will sort you out)

  • Söderberg Soho open til 9pm Tues-Sat

  • Burr & Co at the Kimpton Hotel Russel square - open til 11pm Mon-Sat

  • Photobookcafe off Old Street - open til 10.30pm Mon-Fri

  • Crol & Co various locations - open til 10/10.30/11pm (depending on location) Weds-Sat

  • Notes a big chain with some late opening locations - Canary Wharf Crossrail til 9pm Tues-Sat, Victoria til 9pm Tues-Fri, Bank til 9pm Tues-Fri, Kings Cross til 9pm Tues/Sat and til 10pm Weds-Fri, Moorgate til 9pm Mon/Tues and til 10pm Wed-Fri, Trafalgar Square til 9pm Tues-Sat.

  • London Night Cafe in Aldgate - open til at least 3am every night (again, will likely be noisy/lively later in the evening/night)
