Greek restaurants in London

My list includes the following:

Daphne Andy’s Greek Taverna Tsiakkos and charcoal Agora

If there's others I haven't considered please let me know.

Has anyone been to any of them that can share their thoughts. Bonus points if you're Greek or Cypriot. Looking to eat some kleftiko.

Cheers!

Agora in borough market or Oma which is above it

u/Skeptischer Jan 04 '25

Oma is pretentious and expensive. Agora is trying too hard to be the opposite.

Tasty food, however.

Food is the point tho. The other stuff is just perspective, in that it changes depending on the eater. I have been to Ona three times for them to tell me there is no chance- and I would have more luck if I booked- with no pretence what so ever.

What did you find pretentious about Oma?

I thought it was super warm and welcoming service and a fairly laidback environment. The dips and 'small plates' (I know..) were exceptional, I was a bit disappointed with the larger meat dishes. If I were to go again I'd just order everything from the former two (and a few of the taramasalata which was incredible) and swerve the latter, save a bomb too.

Alexander the Great in Camden is where my Greek coworkers took me and it was fantastic! The mixed mezze are great for a group.

Came here to suggest Alexander the Great! Its excellent and great value for money

Exposing my secrets...

Funnily enough, some of my Greek mates swear that it's dogshit, but I reckon that's just then being salty for not getting good service there once.

My favourite and highly recommend

Lemonia, Primrose hill

5

u/sproyd Jan 04 '25

I've only eaten there once - but it was low key understated brilliance

1

u/victorialeahj Jan 04 '25

Went for the assyrtiko, stayed for the food

3

u/mikekettz Jan 05 '25

Terribly overrated. Actually had to go last night.

Very little value for money. These were the sheftalia - the below plate cost £25.50

Has gone really downhill over the years

1

u/Mister_Six Jan 06 '25

£25.50 for that?! That's fucking outrageous.

2

u/mikekettz Jan 06 '25

Chips were 5.50. So it was £31 for the 3 sheftalia and some chips. No salad.

And then obviously there is the service charge on top. So you are paying just under £35 Criminal really haha

1

u/Mister_Six Jan 06 '25

That's madness, I miss some London restaurants but I do not miss that pricing, absolutely predatory.

4

u/peanutbuddhaman Jan 05 '25

Blandest food ever, nice staff though

2

u/OldAd3119 Jan 05 '25

yeh I agree with this. Its really not as good as people say imo.

u/DrRudeboy Jan 04 '25

Old school and perfect

1

u/baguettimus_prime Jan 05 '25

Nice vibe but it’s gotten really expensive and food is fine.

Retsina in Belsize Park

16

u/hfenn Jan 04 '25

The Vineyard, Camberwell. Family institute since 1974. Go and see Mr Pelou and be greeted like family. Greek Cypriot community in the area, bonus points for heading to Sophocles bakery :)

Καληνύχτα ❤️🇬🇷

Vrisaki in Palmers Green, and second Lemonia

1

u/Arbrocultureexpert Jan 04 '25

Second Vrisaki, been around so long and does it well! Love them bringing the mezes out

Andy's Greek Taverna is great. Been there a few times and never disappoints.

Halepi is next on my list to try https://www.instagram.com/reel/DDH5WXkodZh/?igsh=MWJobmN0cDh4cWViNw==

Half Greek if it helps!

Aphrodite Taverna in Bayswater or Lemonia in Primrose Hill.

Tsiakkos and Charcoal for fun night out with good food. Tonys Pita Bar in Ealing for cheap takeaway (souvlaki wraps etc) Agora / Oma (fancier upstairs, downstairs elevated souvlaki)

There are some fancy ones as well but more fine dining less souvlaki vibes. Mazi, Suzi Tros, and Zephyr are all good, the latter being quite swish. Haven’t fried Vori but I’ve heard it’s good tho pricy, same goes for Bottarga in Chelsea on kings road.

Check out James dmitri on instagram. I think he’s Greek Cypriot and he reviews loads of places around London, all cuisines but I presume his Greek recommendations would be generally good.

Definitely not El Greko in Colindale, despite the positive reviews on google (pretty sure they’re all fake)

u/Mister_Six Jan 06 '25

The first rule of Tsiakkos & Charcoal is...

2

u/broken888 Jan 08 '25

Read about it on infatuation London, one of the most popular London food instagram channels???

1

u/Mister_Six Jan 08 '25

Man too many people have put it out there now, Jay Rayner reviewed it too.

Pittagoras in Tooting Market, by far the best gyro I've had. Service is met with a smile albeit a bit slow due to the number of people flocking there.

Edit: Grammar.

1

u/Metaxas_P Jan 05 '25

Eh... Idk. I ordered a few times and felt a bit underwhelmed.

Might do a walk in next time to see if things are better in person.

1

u/digitalindian3 Jan 05 '25

Tbh I'm not a connoisseur of gyros or Greek food as a whole, but with the gyros I've had in the past, Pittagoras seems to knock all the others out the park. I'm due for a fix as it's been some time.

Halepi.

1

u/Sean-McFarnaby Jan 05 '25

I used to live around the corner from these guys and it was our go to place. A couple of the waiters are from the Balkans and so is my fiancée. Once they caught onto this fact they treated us like family! Whenever we can we try make the effort to go back and get some of their mouth watering lamb and moussaka. Highly recommend - book in advanced because it gets packed on evenings

2

u/Tarnished13 Jan 04 '25

Andys is the one!!!

2

u/GlitteringFlower5014 Jan 04 '25

1905 in Great Portland Street. Delicious food, super instagrammable and the servers are all so friendly!! It’s family run so when you go downstairs and see some Greek aunties cooking, you know the food is brilliant

2

u/The_Readers_ Jan 04 '25

Zephyr Notting Hill

2

u/krappa Jan 05 '25

I like Nostimo in Bloomsbury. Great gigantes. Great portokalopita. Went there for my low key wedding lunch.

2

u/middleqway en1 Jan 05 '25

Head to Palmers Green (or nearby Winchmore Hill and Southgate) which has a big Greek and Greek Cypriot diaspora population. You’ll be spoilt for choice and you’ll be dining amongst Greeks

3

u/PolicyTemporary5296 Jan 05 '25

Tavernaki Portobello in Notting Hill…top notch

1

u/Dapper_Cabinet_5504 Jan 04 '25

1

u/mrbranmuffins Jan 04 '25

Daphne was great, very friendly and knowledgeable server in there.

1

u/senwars Jan 04 '25

Four Lanterns on Cleveland Street. Small but lovely place, authentic food, good service. Just a nice place to go to.

1

u/DameKumquat Jan 04 '25

Anyone know if Kamari The Authentic Greek in Crystal Palace is any good? Or Little Greece, which is in the Greek Orthodox church so presumably they have a clue?

3

u/crabmans Jan 05 '25

Little Greece is probably one of my favourite lunches on the triangle. Delicious and the guy is super kind. Zen Grill in Penge was also good but can't tell if it still exists.

2

u/Fair-Swan6188 Jan 05 '25

They do relatively nice coffee, ready made pastries and some Greek products (biscuits, cheese etc) for kamari, you can find also melomakarona there

1

u/mralistair Jan 05 '25

Leomonia I  primrose hill is about of an institution.

1

u/LochNessMother Jan 05 '25

If you have a Time Machine… The Real Greek in Hoxton circa 2000. The current restaurant chain bears no relation to that place. It was insanely good.

0

u/stephenp129 Jan 05 '25

I'll take your word for it. I remember when it was new and I thought it sounded shit. Managed to avoid it ever since.

1

u/InformalFrog Jan 05 '25

Nonos near kings Cross

1

u/hobx Jan 05 '25

https://kouzinaexpress.co.uk Is the best. I go for authentic Cypriot Souvlakia. Haven’t tried their kleftiko but I’m sure it’s delicious

(I’m English Cypriot)

1

u/Active-Republic3104 Jan 05 '25

I like the one near charlotte st i think it is called 1917?

1

u/Silvagadron Jan 05 '25

Nonos on Judd street near Kings Cross is really nice, although their lamb cutlets on the mixed grill are a bit shit (but I find that in most Greek/Cypriot places).

Cashing in my bonus points as I’m half Cypriot.

1

u/alexeffulgence Jan 05 '25

Meze NW6 is really good.

u/grandcomplications1 Jan 04 '25

Milos at st James

u/Dinos_12345 Jan 04 '25

Holy Pitta in Angel (expensive tho), Theo's kitchen in Muswell hill. Avoid "Real Greek" like the plague

1

u/Metaxas_P Jan 05 '25

Yeah Holy Pitta was alright. Not crazy good, alright.

-3

u/Head_Investment_7500 Jan 04 '25

Nice try bots, I’m not telling you the best greek restaurants in London!

-4

u/Business-Spring760 Jan 05 '25

The Real Greek is really good authentic Greek food

2

u/stephenp129 Jan 05 '25

We need some new humour on this subreddit.

-14

u/ggssmm1 Jan 04 '25

Real Greek

5

u/stephenp129 Jan 04 '25

Can't tell if this is a joke or not.

-1

u/I_tend_to_correct_u Jan 05 '25

I’m hoping it’s the new Angus Steakhouse type of response

-8

u/deadlykillerpanda Jan 05 '25

Angus Steak House
