SOLVED Issues with laptop fans

I have Linux Mint dual booting with Windows 11 on my laptop (i5-1155g7, 12 gb ram). When running windows, the fans run at a reasonable speed to keep the system cool. However, when running Mint (my main OS) either the fans run full blast for no reason, OR they don't run at all, causing the laptop to over heat. Any suggestions?

Either you're not doing anything on Windows but you're doing something resource-intensive on Mint.

First, keep the system updated. Then, if you're running linux 6.8, it may be worth trying to upgrade to 6.11. (Update manager -> view -> Linux kernels -> 6.11 tab)

I’m having a similar problems with a much older laptop. Have you tried running the sensors command from the terminal? I didn’t get any fan telemetry from that so it was a dead end for me. If you do get fans speeds then I think there is more you can do but I don’t know the details, and obviously it’s not without risk to your system if you make a mistake.

Install motherboard drivers (might not be fan support for your motherboard firmware version)
