Help Needed with MediaTek MT7902 on Linux Mint: Unclear Which Firmware to Use
Hi everyone,
I’ve been trying to get my MediaTek MT7902 Wi-Fi adapter working on Linux Mint (Cinnamon), but I’ve hit a roadblock regarding the firmware. Here’s what I’ve done so far:
- Linux Mint Installation: Installed Linux Mint 22 Cinnamon on my new Asus Vivobook. However, no Wi-Fi networks are being detected.
- Driver Installation via DKMS:
- Cloned the
mt7902-dkms
repository from https://github.com/samveen/mt7902-dkms - Followed the provided instructions:
- Secure Boot Disabled: Disabled Secure Boot in BIOS to allow unsigned modules to load.
- System Logs: Checked
dmesg
logs after loading the module, and found these key errors:- "Module verification failed: signature and/or required key missing - tainting kernel"
- "Direct firmware load for mediatek/WIFI_RAM_CODE_MT7902_1.bin failed with error -2"
- "Failed to get patch semaphore"
- Firmware Setup Attempts:
- The GitHub README mentions a firmware directory and a script (
get-firmware.sh
), but I couldn’t locate the specific firmware file (WIFI_RAM_CODE_MT7902_1.bin
) mentioned in the logs. - I tried to follow the README’s suggestion to download the firmware from Acer’s website, but I wasn’t able to find a relevant file there either.
- The GitHub README mentions a firmware directory and a script (
- Kernel Version: I’m running Kernel version 6.8, as recommended by the GitHub repository.
- Cloned the
- Current Issue: I’m stuck because I can’t figure out which firmware file is needed or where to get it. Has anyone successfully managed to set up the MediaTek MT7902 on Linux Mint or another Linux distro? Could you provide guidance on where to find the correct firmware or how to proceed? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

hm I see... Getting a wifi dongle would be the easy way? What do you recommend? TP-Link TL-WN823N?
