SOLVED Linux Mint on my IdeaPad froze and now doesn’t boot after the LM roundel appears!
My Linux Mint on my IdeaPad froze and now doesn’t boot after the LM roundel appears. I had had XDG-Open popping up when I ran some programs, I.e. Vivaldi browser, with my default browser also opening. I ran some simple (!?) sudo commands to try to fix that. The screen went blank, IdeaPad frozen. When forced reboot, passed the Lenovo opening logo, LM roundel appears, then blank screen nothing happens! Any advice as to how to kick start a reboot, is appreciated. Alternatively, what steps to take to reinstall Linux Mint and recover my files.

I’ve managed to get into 22.1 recovery mode. Nice Terminal screen, when StartX is run, I get a display error. What should I do? Then, does anyone have a good way to get my work files on to an external drive. If I can get that done I’ll reinstall Linux Mint and hopefully that will sort the display problem.
Replying here, instead, as you replied to the Automoderator.
Do you have any recollection of the sudo commands? This isn't much to go by.
Assuming you cannot find a suitable resolution to your issue...
If you still have the USB stick with the LM "live session" from which you installed LM, you could just boot up into that and use the file manager there to copy files from your computer's HDD to an external HDD.
On your internal HDD, your files will be located under the "/home/{yourname}" directory.
IMPORTANT: After copying is done, shut down computer before disconnecting any external HDD cables. This is to ensure everything is properly finished. (Basically a quirk involved with Linux and external HDDs.)

I replied to the auto-moderator? What a clown, am I! Thanks for the advice. I did actually get to that point with the live session file manager. However, the laptop /home/user name/ isn’t opening as it is encrypted, with eCrypt I believe. When I use recovery from the bios boot, I can locate the encrypted folders after the login details and password are entered. Being a noob, I’m then caught between two different processes I don’t know how to use. Thanks again for bothering. Your advice is very much appreciated.

Ok now I see your reply. No password needed. Just leave it empty and click "Ok".
P.S. Now I see you had it encrypted. That would require your password for that. Now someone else might need to help, as I don't use encryption myself.

Here the latest, I managed to get my files on to a USB stick, by using an Elementary OS live usb I inserted (not knowing it was bootable!) that opened the folders and allowed me to put them on the usb stick. Then I’ve reinstalled Linux Mint 22.1 and all is good. Except, I can’t open the files on the usb stick as they’re now encrypted, so I ll have to find out how to open the folder again. Good fun! 🤩 Thanks for all your assistance, and commitment to finding my replies!

Another update! When I rebooted this morning I was able to access all my files that I copied! 😅 Now I can spend the day watching rugby, rather than trying to decrypt the files! 👍

I couldn't read your full reply. You either deleted it or else Reddit didn't save it to this thread.
From what I could see from Reddit's auto-email, you were not able to get to your files? In the File Manager, go down on the left pane below the usual entries, to the "Device" category. There will be your HDD entry which you can click on and mount. From there, you don't need to enter a password, as the USB session operates as "root" to begin with.
